Dear Colleagues:

Fiscal Year 99 at Kansas State University enters the books as another exceptional year for researchand sponsored project funding.

The awards amount to $58.5 million, another record; and that funding, in turn, raised the university’stotal research funding base to $91.5 million. Twenty-one weeks last year were “million dollar weeks,”and two weeks surpassed $3 million in awards.

This report lists projects, principal investigators and co-investigators, sponsors, and awards. As youread the report, you’ll notice that many interdisciplinary teams are receiving grants. The trend, in fed-eral and state funding, is toward supporting collaborative work that involves faculty from more thanone discipline. Among the largest awards this year are collaborations that will involve faculty at otherKansas universities, and will help support programs with statewide impact. Through such efforts, theresearch and technology infrastructure of Kansas expands, and new industries will be created here.

Extramural funding ripples across the state. A few examples: recent grants will enhance the Kansas manufacturing sector and train future manufacturing engineers; another will help train SRS supervisors throughout the state; one promotes a statewide family nutrition education program;a grant establishes the Plains Academy co-op that will offer professional coursework via satellite andinternet to teachers in remote areas of Kansas. Another award establishes K-State as a partner uni-versity on Internet 2, the next generation information network linking America’s doctoral/researchuniversities.

The impact of outside funding is felt first of all across the campus. It fosters scholarship, research andcreative work in every department at the university. It supports basic studies and applied ones in agri-culture, architecture, planning and design, arts and sciences, business administration, education, engineering, human ecology, technology and aviation, and veterinary medicine.

K-State research programs help train students who have the opportunity to work alongside the profes-sors. External funding directly supports research assistantships for hundreds of graduate students in K-State’s 107 graduate programs. In FY99, 778 people earned graduate degrees—650 mastersand 128 doctoral degrees. Many K-State undergraduates also take part in the research programs, an experience that’s rare at many other colleges and universities.

A quality research program can also lead to products and ideas with commercial use. This fiscal year,11 new patents were issued for K-State-based inventions, and now those can be licensed and commercialized.

My congratulations to the faculty members for the time, energy and the innovative ideas thatattracted this year’s funding awards, and my thanks to the people throughout the university who workbehind the scenes to make the time-consuming process of applying for extramural support so successful at K-State. Your collaboration, cooperation and generous spirit are to be commended.

Sincerely,

R.W. TrewynVice Provost for ResearchDean of the Graduate SchoolPresident, KSU Research Foundation
