NARRATOR: (Music starts) Luke 2:17-20 says that when the shepherds had seen Jesus, they

GOOD NEWS FROM HOMEOptional Drama

SYNOPSIS

PAUL and DIXIE are a couple in their 50’s. They are on a tour of the Holy Land at Christmastime with their best friends (PHIL and JODI) and their church choir. It is the trip of a lifetimethey’ve been waiting to take. Back home, their son (CHRIS) and his wife (GRACE) are await-ing the birth of their first child. It is a pregnancy for which they have waited and tried for manyyears. Grace isn’t due for another 6 weeks. While PAUL and DIXIE are touring Israel, they getword that Grace has been hospitalized and may deliver the baby early. The dilemma for PAULand DIXIE is whether to abandon the tour and go home right away or wait and see what hap-pens.

CAST

DIXIE – mid 50’s, married to PAUL

PAUL – late 50’s, married to DIXIE

CHRIS – son of DIXIE and PAUL, married to GRACE, early 30’s

PHIL – mid to late 50’s, married to JODI, best friends with PAUL

JODI – early 50’s, married to PHIL, best friends with DIXIE

SPEAKER – Hebrew accented voice that reads Scripture

SETSAll sets can be as simple or elaborate as a church wishes, from a patio table and chairs, to abench, to some plants, to an archway, a railing for a balcony, etc. Each scene is described inmore detail within the script. Scenes should be able to be changed easily.

COSTUMES

There are 4 costume changes called for, but these can be done simply by changing the shirt orblouse worn by the characters. DIXIE and JODI can wear calf-length skirts, and colorful solidtops. PAUL and PHIL can wear khaki pants or slacks and golf shirts. Costumes will be changedbetween scenes 1 and 2 to indicate a change of days. In Scene 4, DIXIE can put on a robe, andPAUL can wear a t-shirt and pajama pants to indicate it is late at night. In Scene 5, the castwears “tourist” clothes again and stays in the same costume for the rest of the play. Each charac-ter should also have a light jacket or wrap for evening scenes.

PAUL: You’re sounding better and better at that.

DIXIE: Sometimes it feels like I will never remember it. But as long as we’re here in Is-rael, I just want to learn some Hebrew phrases to take back home with us.

PAUL: Remind me what it means.

DIXIE: Gadol Adonai means “Great is the Lord.” And umehalol me’od means “Andgreatly to be praised.”

PAUL: Maybe I’ll get a tattoo that says that as a souvenir of our trip.

DIXIE: Well, our kids and grandkids would love that and think you were the coolest ever.

PAUL: You mean they don’t think that now? (getting out his smart phone) What time is itat home? Is it late enough there to call?

DIXIE: Well, we can’t call our California kids just yet, but with the eight-hour difference,we should be okay to call Chris and Grace. They should be up and getting readyfor church.

PAUL: (He listens and then says to DIXIE) It’s ringing. (He pauses and waits for someoneto answer.) Hello? Hello, Chris? Is that you? Thought I had called Grace’s phone.It’s Dad. (He pauses and listens.) Yes, yes, we’re doing great here. We went tochurch at the Nazareth Baptist Church this morning!

DIXIE: Tell them the choir sang the song we learned in Hebrew.

PAUL: Chris, I’m gonna put Mom on the line. (He hands her the phone.)DIXIE: Hi, honey! The choir sang the song we learned in Hebrew at church this morning.

Can you believe it? We are singing praises to God right here where Jesus grew up!(She pauses to listen.) Yes, everything is fine. We’re having an incredible time. IsGrace there? Can you put her on the phone? (She listens and her face changes toconcern.) You’re where? You’re at the hospital?

PAUL: What’s wrong? Is Grace okay?

DIXIE: Chris, let me put you on speaker phone so Dad can hear. (She touches the phone’sscreen.)

CHRIS: (unseen, but his voice comes from the phone)… and so the doctor thought as aprecaution, maybe she should be in the hospital just so they can watch her, sincethis is her first pregnancy.

DIXIE: We should come home right away.

CHRIS: Now Mom, that’s not necessary. Seriously. There’s no emergency. It’s just waitand see for now. And you and Dad have waited and planned for this trip for solong.

PAUL: So you’re there at the hospital with her? Can we talk to her?

CHRIS: Well, she is sleeping right now, and since we were up a lot last night, I’m justgoing to let her rest, if you don’t mind. But she is okay, so don’t worry. We’redoing everything the doctor says.

DIXIE: But the baby isn’t due for another six weeks. It’s too early.

PAUL: Honey, they know that.

CHRIS: The doctor said the baby is probably four pounds. So yes, it’s early, but they aregoing to do everything they can to keep him or her inside her mommy for as longas they can.

PAUL: What can we do?

CHRIS: Well, you can pray.

DIXIE: Do you mind if we share with the rest of the choir what’s going on?

CHRIS: Of course we don’t mind. We would love to know they are all praying. Hey, I’mgoing to say goodbye. The doctor just came in, so I need to talk to him. Please trynot to worry. I know God is taking care of us. I’ll talk to you first thing tomorrow,okay? Love you guys… bye.

(PAUL and DIXIE embrace.)DIXIE: Oh, Paul… our daughter-in-law! Our grandchild! I’m worried. Maybe we should

go ahead and go home.

PAUL: I know, I know. But Chris would tell us if we needed to come. I’ll go ahead andcheck on flights, just in case we need to leave. But for now, I think we just trustthe Lord and pray and try to go on with the trip.

DIXIE: I know you’re right. All these years of waiting have been so tough on them, watch-ing their friends and siblings have kids. I knew this baby was going to be a giftfrom God, but I don’t think I want him or her to be a Christmas gift!

(praying and holding PAUL’s hand) Father, we need You so much right now.Please put Your hand on Grace and on Chris, and especially protect the baby.Please keep him or her safe.

PAUL: And Father, give us wisdom about what we should do. If we should go back home,impress that on us. But if You want us here, then show us that too. For now, we aregoing to wait on You.

in. (He exits)PHIL: I don’t know about you all, but I am starving!

JODI: (holding out her handbag) I told you I thought I had some loaves and fish some-where in my bag, Phil.

PHIL: I’m thinking that if I had followed Jesus up that Mount of Beatitudes and hadn’thad anything to eat, I would have been plenty happy with fish and bread. In fact,I’d be happy with it now!

JODI: That was amazing seeing that, wasn’t it? All these years I’ve wondered how Jesuscould possibly make Himself heard to more than 5000 people as He taught.

PHIL: It’s just so like God to create that hillside perfectly so that everyone could hearevery word Jesus said. That IS pretty amazing.

JODI: Dixie, are you okay?

DIXIE: Jodi, I’m just so concerned about Grace and the baby. When I called earlier, Chrissaid they were keeping a close watch on her blood pressure. They want to makesure she doesn’t have pre-eclampsia. I know I shouldn’t have Googled it and readwhat that means, but I did and now I’m more worried than ever.

JODI: Oh, Dixie, I know your heart is kind of torn in two right now, wanting to be therewith her. I’m so sorry.

PHIL: Can you call again?

DIXIE: Chris said they would call us at 7 or 8 p.m. our time. Hopefully, they’ll have talkedto the doctor by then. I’m just trying to focus on what we’re seeing and experienc-ing here and put her in God’s hands.

(PAUL enters.)PHIL: What’s the word? Can we get into our rooms yet? I would love a nap before din-

ner.

PAUL: Well, there’s a little bit of a problem. Your room is all ready, but they can’t seem tofind our names on the reservation list, and they are totally booked.

JODI: Oh no! How can that be? The reservations for our entire group were all made atthe same time! This is terrible.

PAUL: Actually, when you think about it, it’s kind of funny.

PHIL: You think it’s funny?

PAUL: Well, yeah. I mean, we aren’t in Bethlehem, but we ARE in Israel and it’s Christ-mas and here we are so worried about the arrival of a baby… and what do youknow… there’s no room at the inn! (He pauses while they all stare at him.)Am Ithe only one who finds that kind of… well… hilarious?

DIXIE: I’m glad you’ve got such a good sense of humor. ’Cause right now, I don’t think Iwant one more complication!

PAUL: Yeah, I’m thinking Mary and Joseph felt just like that. Hadn’t they been throughenough that night in Bethlehem? Did God really have to put one more crisis intheir way?

(DIXIE, PHIL and JODI ad lib agreement and sympathy at this thought.)PAUL: Anyway, the (he uses “air quotes”) “innkeeper” said no worries. It’s almost cer-

tainly just a little glitch, and they’ll get it straightened out. (He pulls out hisphone.) Meanwhile, I’ve already put this selfie of me and the desk clerk on Face-book with the status, “No room!”

(They all gather around to look at PAUL’s phone as the lights go down on the scene andthe song begins. Exit quietly during “Make Room for Jesus.”)

The same hotel patio later that day. DIXIE and JODI have light wraps around their shoul-ders, and PAUL and PHIL have on jackets. DIXIE, JODI and PHIL are seated at a smallpatio table. PAUL and DIXIE’s luggage is next to the table. PAUL enters holding up ahotel key card.

PAUL: Good news! We have a room for the night.

DIXIE: Oh, thank heavens! I was beginning to think we might actually have to sleep in acave!

JODI: What happened, Paul?

PAUL: I’m not really sure. But I’ve never been so happy to have a confirmation number!

DIXIE: Yeah… when did you become “Mr. Organization?”

PAUL: It wasn’t me. Siri must have put it on my calendar somehow.

PHIL: Well, praise the Lord for Siri! (He pauses.) And there’s a sentence I never thoughtI’d be saying!

PAUL: And here’s the funny thing: Since they didn’t have a room for us, they upgraded usto a suite for tonight. (to DIXIE) There’s God’s crazy favor at work, right?

JODI: God’s what?

DIXIE: Oh, ever since our kids were little, that’s how Paul has explained God’s grace tothem. It’s His favor on us when we don’t deserve it and when we least expect it.

PAUL: We’ve sure seen it a lot over the years, and once we had a name for it, we tried topoint it out to Chris and his sisters every time we saw an example of it. It got towhere, they would be the ones to call our attention to it.

PHIL: God’s crazy favor, huh?

DIXIE: You’d be amazed how often you find it when you start looking for it.

PAUL: The first time I remember our kids being kind of blown away by it was right afterChristmas years ago. We had come back to town after visiting with family. It waslate and I had taken them up to the grocery store with me to buy milk and a fewother things to get us through breakfast the next day. Those kids had had so muchChristmas, so many presents from first my family and then from Dixie’s. Butthey’re like all kids at Christmas once the last gift has been opened. They were alittle like “so is that it?” I don’t know… you ever experience that with your kids,or was it just ours?

JODI: (laughing) You weren’t alone in that. I think that’s just being a kid.PAUL: Well anyway, there we were at the grocery store, and they were already wanting

me to buy them something more. It was just little left-over Christmas trinkets, butstill… I was tired and so irritated at them for being such greedy little urchins, and Iremember saying to them (with great emphasis), “You’ve had all the presentsyou’re getting. You’ve had more than you have a right to expect.”

PHIL: I think I’ve uttered those exact words.

PAUL: We got up to the check out, and the manager says to me, “Hey, we’ve got this boxof Christmas goodies that we’re just going to get rid of. I really just want to clearour shelves and be done with it. Is it okay if I give it to your kids?” I was justabout to tell him no, because… you know… I had just told the kids they’d hadenough and were getting nothing else. And Chris, who was maybe four, looks upat me with his big brown eyes and says, “Daddy… it’s God’s crazy favor!”

CHRIS: Hey, Mom. Yes, I hear you just fine. I’m sorry to call so late there. It’s 4 in the af-ternoon here, so — what is it there? Midnight? I’m so sorry if I woke you.

DIXIE: What’s going on, Chris? Is Grace all right?

CHRIS: Well, she’s hanging in there. But her blood pressure is pretty high, and they arewatching her very closely. And on and off today she has had some contractions.

DIXIE: Oh sweetie, you are never too old to need your mom!

DIXIE: Honey, Dad’s here too.

PAUL: Hello, Son? How are you doing? How’s Grace?

CHRIS: Hey, Dad. Sorry for the late-night call.

PAUL: Don’t you worry about that for a second.

CHRIS: What did you and Mom see today?

PAUL: We took a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee.

CHRIS: No kidding!

PAUL: We were out on the water where Jesus calmed the storm with just a word. It suremade me think about you, Son. I know this is a storm you didn’t expect.

CHRIS: I guess I’m feeling a little like the disciples must have felt in that boat — like I’mabout to go under, and right now it feels like Jesus is sound asleep.

PAUL: Look, we both know God isn’t at all surprised by what’s happening, but it’s hardfor us to understand His timing in all this. I just know that out on the water today, Itried to imagine Jesus waking up and asking Peter and James and John why theywere so scared when He was right there with them. And I tried to hear Him speak-ing peace, not just to the Sea of Galilee, but to the storm we’re going through rightnow. He’s there with you, Chris, even though we’re not.

CHRIS: I know He is, Dad. I guess I just needed to hear you say it.

DIXIE: Sweetie, we’re praying for you all the time.

CHRIS: Where are you going tomorrow?

DIXIE: Well, it’s Christmas Eve. We’re scheduled to be in Bethlehem in Manger Square.

CHRIS: Oh, wow. That’s going to be something. Well, take lots of pictures, okay?

DIXIE: You know we will. And we will call you around 8 or 9 in the morning, your time.Our bus leaves here at 8 a.m. and we have about a 3 hour ride to get there, I think.

CHRIS: If you have to leave by 8, you’re not going to get much sleep. I’d better say good-bye.

DIXIE: Chris, Dad wants to lead us in prayer before we hang up.

(PAUL puts his arm around her and reaches out his other arm, as if he’s reaching towardhome.)

PAUL: Father, we know that You are with us right now, here by the Sea where Jesuswalked on the water and where He fed thousands of people and where He healedso many of every kind of disease. And You are with Chris and Grace at home too.We ask for You to stretch out Your hand and say “Peace, be still!” to the stormChris and Grace are going through, just like You did to the sea so long ago. We askYou to multiply every good thing in their lives, just like You did when You fedthousands. We ask You to heal Grace, just like You healed so many who came to

Bethlehem the following night. Scene can include 3 pillars behind them and some tallpots with plants in them. It is Christmas Eve. PAUL, DIXIE, PHIL and JODI enter carry-ing unlit candles with wind protectors for the outdoor service in Manger Square. They arewearing light jackets. The choir can also carry candles, as though they are part of thescene in Manger Square.

DIXIE: I just can’t believe we’re here.

JODI: I know. Bethlehem… on Christmas Eve. I’m going to cry.

PHIL: I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around it all.

(PAUL’s cell phone buzzes and he looks to see who it is from.)PAUL: (to DIXIE) It’s Chris. (He answers the call.) Chris? Hi… what’s going on?

(During the following conversation, he listens between his comments to CHRIS’s end ofthe conversation, which will not be heard by the audience.)

PAUL: She’s in labor for sure? … Well, what are they telling you? … Okay. I understand.… Do they think it will be tonight, on Christmas Eve?

DIXIE: Is Grace all right? Is she having the baby?

PAUL: Okay, Chris. You know that we are praying here, but our hearts are definitely therewith you. Please tell Grace that we love her. And… keep us posted. No matterwhat time it is, we want to hear what’s happening. … Okay, Son. And Chris … welove you. (He hangs up the phone, then turns to DIXIE.) Grace is in labor. It isn’tan emergency, but they are going to go ahead and do a C-section. Grace and thebaby are both doing fine for now.

DIXIE: (starting to cry) Oh, Paul.(JODI comforts DIXIE.)(A loudspeaker is heard, as though the evening’s events are underway. It is someone read-ing Scripture. If possible, it would add to the scene if it could be done with a Hebrew ac-cent. During the reading, PAUL, DIXIE, PHIL and JODI light their candles, then takethem to the choir to light their candles as well.)

PHIL: … and Lord, I know that Paul and Dixie’s hearts ache right now, wanting to bewith Grace and Chris. It’s hard being so far away and just waiting for news. Fa-ther, I pray that before this night is over, they’ll get the good news they’re prayingfor. We ask it in the mighty name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

PAUL, DIXIE and JODI: Amen.

(JODI hugs DIXIE.)JODI: Hang in there, Dix. God’s going to be faithful.

PHIL: Guys, I think the choir is gathering to sing. They’ll understand if you can’t be apart, but I promised I would try to live-stream it or at least get video.

PAUL: Well, if we believe that God’s got this, then we have to put our faith into action,don’t we? (to DIXIE) Are you up for this?

DIXIE: (sighing and nodding her head) You’re right, honey. We’ve prayed and put thiswhole situation in God’s hands. Let’s just trust Him with it.

Bethlehem, midnight on Christmas Eve.

(PAUL and DIXIE enter.)DIXIE: I’m exhausted, but at the same time, I know I won’t be able to sleep until we hear

some news from home.

PAUL: I know you’re tired. Phil says the bus will be leaving to take us back to the hotel inabout 15 minutes.

DIXIE: Surely if they’re doing a C-section, we’ll hear something soon.

(PAUL’s cell phone rings and he answers quickly.)PAUL: Hello! Chris?

DIXIE: Put him on speaker.

PAUL: I’m putting you on speaker, Chris. Mom and I are right here.

(CHRIS’s voice is heard.)CHRIS: We have a beautiful little baby girl, and she and Grace are both doing fine!

(DIXIE and PAUL ad lib excitement and relief)CHRIS: She was born about an hour ago. She’s a little bigger than they thought she would

be—four pounds 8 ounces. So, she’ll be in the hospital and get extra care untilshe’s at least five pounds. But the doctor said that she really looks good. Her lungsare strong and everything so far has checked out better than he hoped.

DIXIE and PAUL: Oh, praise God!

CHRIS: And Grace is doing great. I’m emailing you some pictures of the baby. We’ve de-cided to call her Evangeline. It means “bearer of good news.”

PAUL: Oh, that’s just beautiful. I love it!

DIXIE: What about her middle name?

CHRIS: Grace, for her mama. And because “grace” is the best news of all.

DIXIE: Oh Chris, that is just wonderful! Evangeline Grace!

CHRIS: Well listen, they are telling us that we can go to the nursery and hold her, so I’mgoing to hang up. But I will call you tomorrow, probably around 7 or 8 a.m. hereand you’ll be able to talk to Grace. Maybe we could even try to FaceTime, andyou’ll be able to see little Evie for yourself! I’ll talk to you later, Mom and Dad. Ilove you!

(CHRIS hangs up as PHIL and JODI enter.)DIXIE: It’s the best possible news! We have a granddaughter, and she’s doing great! She’s

around four and half pounds.

PAUL: And Grace is doing great too.
