Dear Guild Members,

It has been an interesting couple of months. I think that we are beginning to see some real signs that summer is just around the corner. I have been doing some traveling and have seen some interesting places. Our guild is always on my mind. I am always looking for new ideas that could work for us. I am forever grateful for committee people that work so hard to make their committees work. Our op-portunity quilt is being circulated here and there. I am sure you will see it at your local quilt shop or com-munity activity. Be sure to participate in helping sell tickets for it. This is our money maker and selling tickets is most important, for it s success. I hope that you will each do your share, if only to buy one book of tickets. Four Corners was wonderful. It was my first time to go and it was great. We always have a good group go. The company was good and the food was wonderful. It has become a hi-light that I will try to always participate in, and I hope that you will too. It has been wonderful to see your U.F.O s coming in. I currently have one on the frame to hand quilt. I have to remember that my roots are in hand quilting. The difference is in time spent on the quilting. It takes a lot more time to hand quilt, I find. I guess until I got my long arm quilter, the time spent on hand quilting wasn't realized. I am determined to get this quilt finished in the next two weeks. My fingers tell me that it has been a long time since I hand quilted, cause they hurt. I got to go to the Denver Quilt Show. We had several members with quilts there. It is a huge show and is very spread out. It was interesting to see the vendors, hoping that our efforts with vendors will work for us. There were lots of them. I also took a class with Jackie Robinson. She is a great teacher. I learned her Hunter s Star pattern. I am excited to come home and continue working on my blocks. Jackie also sends her love to all those in the four corners area. She has fond memories of our guild. We have Children s Day coming soon. I hope that you are looking around at your children and grand-children that can participate with us. It will be fun to teach the little ones a new skill. Plan to bring your sewing machines, I know they will be needed to work with. We have lots of good things coming in the future, I hope that you will look forward to the coming events and plan to continue to radiate the love of quilting in all that you come in contact with. Continue to work in your resource centers and make beautiful quilts. Remember a quilter s hands are never idle.

Sincerely, Karen Brimhall

AUGUST 11 - COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK DAY

The August program will be dedicated to Community Service. Get your teams together for a round of fun. We will be working on teamwork, accuracy and fun. Plan on staying all day and working up some of the blocks into quilts. I hope this will be a fun and productive day.

Minutes of San Juan Quilters Guild Board May 14, 2009

The meeting was called to order by presi-dent Karen Brimhall, at 9:02 am. The President provided an agenda for mem-bers to follow. Mary Keith, secretary was absent, so the minutes of the March 12, 2009 meeting were read by Kristi Necaise, vice presi-dent. The board approved the minutes following a motion by Patty Hanscom and a second by Lori Cosby. The treasurer Virginia Miller provided members with an updated budget and expenses as of may 5, 2009.

OLD BUSINESS A new name was drawn for the quilt from last year's Children's day. The winner was Hayden Carpenter. Bylaw revisions are now completed. Per Karen Brimhall, we are no longer required to send a copy of the revisions to Santa Fe, we are only required to keep one in our records. Karen Brimhall and Mary Keith have copies for the Guild. The new bylaws will be printed in next year's roster. Maxine Rhien has agreed to be the head of the phone tree in the event that a future meeting has to be canceled. The membership committee will keep her updated with new members information. Thank you, Maxine. A chairperson for the Christmas party is still needed, since there were no volun-teers for this position. Karen Brimhall will head the committee and the board will assist her . Gail Aspormonte will be doing the meal. Linda Barlow has agreed to take the Pro-gram chairperson position. Thank you Linda.

NEW BUSINESS Pay for the mother and daughter program was discussed and each lady will be given $75.00. Program pay for the next year was also discussed. Lori Cosby proposed that the payment for each presentation be $150.00. A motion was made by Karen Brimhall and a second by Jeannie Shindler. Board approval followed. Lori Cosby proposed that a contract should be required for all programs in-cluding guild members. A contract used for out of town guests will be revised and used. A motion was made by Revis Taylor,

a second was made by Joanne Elliott. Board approval followed. The guild will send out thank letters to Baynard Duke and BP Fabric Fund of Amer-ica for the $500.00 donation. We will also send a thank you note to Larry and Norma Stewart, who make the newborn hats. Anna Lawing followed up on the juried art show to be held next year at San Juan col-lege. The wording in the contract referring to an original piece does not pertain to quilts that are being hung. There will be a small community service project and Joanne Elliott will also have a small project for the quilt show for people to stay and work on after the June meeting. Linda Krake still has not received any confir-mation from Kaye England, despite many attempts. After a discussion a motion was made by Anna Lawing with a second from Jeannie Shindler that we cancel Kaye and start pursuing someone else for next year.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Thrift shop- Made $214.75 for April and May. Jill Fisher won the silent action in April. Hospitality- June guild will provide hot dogs, chili , pork-n-beans and Kool-Aid, members asked to bring kid friendly foods to go along.

July- guild will provide Bar-B-Que sandwiches please bring veggies, sal-ads, desserts. Community Service- In August we will be working on project using pre- cut strips for a log cabin. Opportunity quilt- Still need people for Sun-day at River Fest, and we still need people for Aztec Days. Quilt Show Vendors- 41 letters have been sent out and a few more letters will be sent out. So far we have 8 confirmations to rent space. County Fair- 9 Quilts have been turned in so far, most are big, we are in need of a few smaller ones. The raffle will be on Saturday at 8:00pm. Membership- needs more door prizes. There were 4 new members at the May meeting, 2 at the daytime and 2 in the eve-ning. Programs- Linda Krake only has one more slot left for the Michelle Watts class in July. Linda will post a supply list for this class on our web site. Due to high interest in the

class from Michelle Watts, it was discussed that we approach Michelle about a possible second class if she can extend her stay. Children's day: Shari has ordered the favors to be given to the children, including whistles and change purses. We need fat quarters bright or kids prints. Kids will also color a block for the quilt that will be raffled, other activities for kids will include coaster and placemat. Sewing machines will be needed please contact Ellen Vandruff.

Members present were- Karen Brimhall, Kristi Necaise, Jeannie Shindler, Patty Hanscom, Lori Cosby, Joanne Elliott, Shari Schmitt, Naedeen Bacon, Linda Barlow, Virginia Miller, Mary Foust, Connie Polzon, Revis Taylor and Anna Lawing.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Thank you ladies for all the hard work getting tops and quilts together and all of the fleece trimmed. You have been awesome and faithful in taking and returning items. Be sure to remember to check items out and mark them off when they are re-turned.

We will continue to have items that are prepared for Zak Bowen s Eagle Scout project. These need to be sewn and turned but not quilted. The boys will be tying those quilts for their project.

At the June meeting, in conjunction with Kid s Day, we will have some commu-nity service projects to work on for those who do not bring children or who are not helping with the children. In June, please bring the usual sewing equipment - machine, cutter, mat, rulers, etc. I will have equipment and fabrics as well, so no excuses. Thank you, Patty Hanscom, 326-3564 (new number) or 716-1126

THINGS TO BRING FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE IN JUNE

6 ½ INCH SQUARES FOR I-SPY QUILTS UNDERWEAR FOR THE WOMEN S SHELTER CANNED FOODS AND NON-PERISABLES Encourage children to bring canned goods and non-perishables.

Those bringing canned goods and non-perishables will receive a token of our appreciation to help our community. Please help us, help our community.

OPPORTUNITY QUILT TICKET SALES

Please pick up Opportunity Quilt tickets from Patty Hanscom. We will be show-ing the quilt and selling tickets at RiverFest May 23-24th at the Rocky Reach Landing off of Browning Parkway. Also at Aztec Fiesta Days on June 6th. We did not fill all the slots at the May meeting so if you can work any of these days, please call Patty Hanscom, 326-3564 or 716-1126. Bring friends by to see the quilt hanging in all its glory. Betsy Lee did a wonderful job designing and making this quilt and Theresa Fetch donated her time quilting it, so lets all get out and sell these tickets and support the guild.

FROM THE THRIFT SHOP

CONGRATULATIONS TO JILL FISCHER ON WINNING THE SILENT AUCTION IN APRIL. ENJOY OUR THREAD RACK.

Children s day For Children s Day this year we have lots of fun stuff planned. We are planning on making blocks for the children to color. We think they will have a hot air balloon on them. These blocks will make the quilt that is given away after the quilt show. We are also planning on making place mats and coasters. The coasters are made of 6

6 blocks. Four of the blocks are folded in half to make a rectangle or a triangle. These blocks are then placed on top of two squares and sewn around the edge and turned right side out. We will also have a quilt for the children to help us tie.

Please remember to bring your sewing machine and your patience. Come prepared to help the chil-dren complete their projects. If you have any questions contact Ellen Vandruff 598-6352, or 330-5986 or Karen Brimhall 598-5193 or 486-3472.

Karen Brimhall and the guild board members have taken on another task, they will plan our Christmas Party to be held on December 8, 2009. Please see the article on page 8 giving more details to this event.

Also, Linda Barlow has agreed to be our Programs Chair Person.

Thanks to Karen, Linda and the board for taking their time to make our Guild a success. We appreciate each and every one of you.
