Whether you’re back home or still in Harbor Cove enjoying your Summer, please think about being a volunteer for some activities next season. Our community is in the need of chairs for Thanksgiving dinner and the Christmas Eve service. You can contact any civic board member if you are interested or need more information on chairing these activities. I am writing this month’s article giving a break to our President Diane Matteson. She is actually trying to take a well deserve vacation in upstate New York. This is the quiet time of year when so many of our friends and neighbors are enjoying the summer months in a cooler climate somewhere up north. Our maintenance employees have completed the building of the beautiful set up (waterfalls and fountain) in front of the office building. Our manager has been working steadily on major projects like the replacement of the front stairs to the Recreation Hall, the new stairway on the parking side, inspection and evaluation of the seawall with our engineer, the hardening of our major buildings and working with our Emergency Preparedness committee led by Willie Howlett. We are still looking for volunteers to join the different groups needed in case of a major disaster. Anyone interested in helping the community in such instances please contact the Harbor Cove Office. Hope everyone is

staying healthy and safe during those nice summer months Following up on violation letters that were sent earlier this year, the final inspection of the houses in default has been completed. Letters have been sent to 18 house owners notifying them of the need to appear at a hearing set by our fining committee. This is being done to ensure that our community is well maintained and is inviting to all of our residents as well as protect our property values. Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe during the nice summer months.

ONE “THANK YOU” TO MANY VOLUNTEERSBy Tom Hanson

When agreeing to chair or coordinate an activity there are many others who actually make that event possible. I had the privilege to coordinate this year’s Memorial Day program and to chair the first Summer Fun Happy Hour of the season, a pig roast.

Memorial Day was an interesting challenge because until last year, Sue and I were not here in the summer and were not familiar with the annual program. I really appreciate my Memorial Day mentors: Grant Powers, Peter Olsson and Don Ramsdell. I also thank the participants: Don Ramsdell, Ron Erickson, Chris Marx, Jack Wikle, Ellie Wikle, Doug Scherer, Joyce Cattelane, Katie Littmann, Steve Kereazes, Bob Meyer, and Harry Barrett. Thanks to all of you who helped to set up and take down, and a big thanks to Sue Hanson for baking a wonderfully tasty array of pastries. Sue was also there for any assistance, advice and answering questions for me, not to mention doing the programs. You are the best! The biggest thanks, however, go to the veterans who formed the Line of Honor so they could be recognized for their service to this country. The first Happy Hour couldn’t have happened without the Summer Fun Committee. They gave me the okay to try a pig roast and it turned out to be a happy success. Johnny’s Old Fashioned Barbeque came through with a delicious pulled pork dinner, and many folks stopped by to watch the smoking process throughout the day. Thanks to Pam Pearsall, Sue Turnquist, and Dan Cox for all their assistance, thanks to all those who assisted with clean up. And again, Sue, for all that she did. Thank you to Harbor Cove—the ones who volunteer make these events happen and not just happen but happen with success!

Hopefully, those of you going north have arrived safely at your homes. Those of us staying at Harbor Cove are enjoying lots of hot weather already. The rainy season hasn’t really started yet; but, I am not looking forward to the heavy rain drops that pelt our homes here in Florida. Hopefully, the hurricanes will stay away this summer. If not, I have already announced that I will be the first one to show up at the High School. The closest thing I have come to a hurricane, is when Ike left Houston, it came up to Cincinnati and ripped roofs off in my neighborhood. The community was without electricity much longer than Houston (where Ike made landfall). Take care and be safe. Don’t take it for granted that I have been informed about those who are ill or have suffered a loss. Please leave a message on my answering machine at 941-240-6718 or e-mail me at: [email protected]. I will be away on a couple of short trips, but will be here most of the summer.

“The Light Between Oceans” by M. L. Stedman was the book we reviewed in May. Everyone enjoyed it although, I admit I cried through a lot of it. What a tear jerker but well worth the read. All of us recommend it.

Due to a couple of us being gone through part of the summer, we decided to wait until fall to begin again. I will pick a book in September and we’ll discuss it the first Thursday in October. Those of you who are up North will be able to get the book at your local library and read it before you come back. Look for the title in the September newsletter. HARBOR COVE FISHING CLUBBy Mark McGrath

Fishing has been a challenge as the weather has been playing real havoc with trying to avoid the storms. The trip that was scheduled to go out of Sarasota at Marina Jack’s May 11th on the Flying Fish I and II was scrubbed due to weather conditions. Reds have been hitting and here are some pictures of Doug, Teresa and Steve with their recent catches. The group is trying to organize an overnight trip going to the middle grounds out of Port Charlotte. More details to follow, so members should look for an e-mail as this develops. At the last Fishing Club meeting which was held on Sunday June 5th we again had several new individuals join the Club with our ranks now at 61 paid members. There was discussion on having a welcome back party in early December maybe with a cookout on the patio. This will also be a great way to get the word out and provide more information about what the Fishing Club is all about for those that might want to join. I have not heard from any of those that are at their summer residences as far as how the fishing is elsewhere in the States. So I will report from Wisconsin where I spend my summer. The 36th anniversary of the Spring Classic of Champions Muskie Tournament will take place Friday June 10th through Sunday June 12th on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. Cold weather dropped water temperatures 6 to 8 degrees which slowed the walleye fishing but they still can be found feeding in the weeds 6 to 12 foot range. Bass are on the shorelines spawning throughout the area but smallmouth are not legal until June 18th and it is recommended anglers release largemouths while they are spawning. Enjoy your summer and try fishing, you may get hooked.

The month of June activities for the Harbor Cove Singles were led by Gerry MacQueen. The month started off with dinner at Old World, following our organizational meeting. We had breakfast at Cafe Jardin, Venice, a picnic lunch at the North Jetty,

and lunch at the root beer stand. Gerry hosted a dinner at her home, and our last activity of the month was dinner at Mi Pueblo. We will continue to hold our meetings during the summer, so please join us on the first Wednesday of the month, at 4:00 m in the Hospitality Room, so you can review our plans , join us following the meeting for dinner and sign up for any of the activities you may desire to attend. Betty Noll will be in charge of activities in July.Hope to see you there.

The most important factors in choosing accommodations: price (94 percent cited that as the leading factor), followed by ratings (90 percent), close availability to attractions (89 percent), and dining options (79 percent). Other amenities are

crucial as well: Seventy percent of those surveyed said they wouldn’t stay at a hotel without air conditioning, and 42 percent won’t sign in anyplace that doesn’t have Wi-fi.

High IQ = fewer friends?How do friendships influence happiness? A study published in the British Journal of Psychology looked at data from a long-term survey of 15,000 people ages 18–28 to find out. The study found that happiness tends to increase with the number of social interactions people have.

Not too surprising so far, but researchers noticed an interesting fact: People with high IQs seem to be less happy the more they spend time with friends. The researchers theorize that people with higher IQs are more likely to find satisfaction in long-term endeavors than socializing with friends.

firm Alix Partners, which surveys restaurant-goers, reports that diners expect to pay 1.9 percent more for their meals in 2016, for an average of $14.25, up from $13.99 last year.

It’s the first time expectations have risen since Alix Partners began their surveys in 2007. In other findings, the survey found that consumers are nervous about food-borne illnesses, with 28 percent saying they’d never eat at a restaurant that had experienced an outbreak, and 34 percent indicating they’d wait until the restaurant had been cleared by health authorities. And just because they plan to spend more money doesn’t mean they’re not on the lookout for deals—56 percent say they’re going to look for more coupons and other discounts this year.

Young athletes embrace footballFootball is the fastest-growing youth sport in the U.S., according to a survey conducted for USA Football (the national governing body) by the Physical Activity Council and Sports Marketing Surveys USA. Among American kids 6 and older, flag football showed the biggest rise—8.7 percent from 2014 to 2015, representing approximately 120,000 more young players.

Baseball came in second, with a jump of 3.3 percent, and tackle football increased by about 1.9 percent, or about 21,000 additional players.

The numbers were similar in the 15–18 age group: Flag football grew 10.5 percent, adding about 100,000 players, and tackle football increased 2.5 percent, for 30,000 more players. The only other sport to grow in size among the older age group was basketball, at 1.1 percent.
