Mark T. Brainard, President

There’s no doubt that 2016 was an

extraordinary year at Delaware Tech.

We honored the College’s founders,

hosted thousands of Delawareans during

Inaugural Week, celebrated the success

of our alumni, and gave back to our

communities through more than 50 service

projects. Our 50th Anniversary Fund, which

was created to benefit the greatest needs of

students, raised more than $100,000.

In this issue of Delaware Tech

Magazine, you will find many highlights

from our 50th year. While we are proud

of the College’s accomplishments, we

know that becoming the educational

leader we are today would not have been

possible without our employees, partners,

employers, advisory committee members,

alumni, families, and friends – all of whom

have helped us prepare more than 48,000

graduates for the workforce since 1966.

As we look to the future, Delaware

Tech’s mission remains the same – to

provide Delawareans with an affordable,

What a wonderful year 2016 turned out to be! And, of course, our Delaware Tech alumni helped make it that much more special. In keeping with our 50th theme, “Delivering Excellence, Changing Lives,” more than 50 successful alumni were

profiled on our website (www.dtcc.edu/50th/success); our graduates helped us give back to our local communities through 50 service projects; and they played a critical part in the success of #GivingTuesday which raised over $25,000 and resulted in 172 coats for people in need.

While Delaware Tech celebrated its 50th, our alumni organization celebrated a year of firsts. We kicked off 2016 with our first collegewide alumni association board meeting which brought together our three long-standing campus chapters under one umbrella. We revamped our alumni benefits, provided our alumni with access to the College’s career services, and distributed our first e-newsletter in the fall.

As we begin 2017, we are excited to build on the momentum of our anniversary year, and we hope you will join us. Let us find an opportunity for you to get involved in a way that works for you! Our alumni are involved at many levels. Sometimes just a few words of advice from our successful graduates can make all the difference for students who are facing a difficult time. Or maybe you would like to display your Delaware Tech pride with a special Delaware Tech license plate for a small donation. You can show your school spirit while helping to fund alumni and student programs. Email [email protected] for more information.

So whether you have been out of school for a few years or you just graduated, we encourage you to join the many alumni who are giving back and making a difference for the next generation of Delaware Tech students. Contact us, tell us your story, and let us know how we can help you get involved! Just visit go.dtcc.edu/alumni and click on the green button that says “We want to hear from you!”

We wish you and your families a wonderful 2017!

Fifty years of delivering excellence and changing lives has resulted in countless stories of success, hard work, determination, and a never-give-up attitude from Delaware Tech students. They have graduated and gone on to become nurses, paramedics, dental hygienists, food safety professionals, auto mechanics, firefighters, police officers, teachers, welders, small business owners and a host of other professions. Throughout the year we have highlighted 50 different alumni on the 50th anniversary website. Here are just a few of those stories.

Purusha Rivera always knew that babies would be a part of her life. Graduating from Delaware Tech in 2000 with a degree in diagnostic medical sonography, Rivera pursued a

career in pregnancy sonography. She was living her dream with two children and a thriving career in her field.

Then she discovered something that would change her life forever – a teddy bear containing a recordable device to capture the sound of a baby’s heartbeat through an ultrasound. The expecting mother could then hear this special sound whenever she wanted.

Rivera began offering the bears for purchase, and a business was born.

Since the business began in 2009, it has grown by leaps and bounds, last year earning about $1.2 million in sales and sales are steadily increasing.

Rivera credits Delaware Tech for giving her the education and hands-on training she needed to pursue her passion. “Delaware Tech prepared me very well to succeed in my chosen career,” said Rivera on a recent visit to speak with current sonography students. As a way to pay it forward, she is creating a scholarship for a sonography student to pursue his or her dreams, too. “I love what I do, and I am blessed to have found my passion and be able to share it with the world.”

Detective Eric Watkins of the Delaware Capitol Police will be the first to tell you that his Delaware Tech degree is the foundation of his successful 23-year career in law

enforcement. While earning his criminal justice degree from the Owens Campus in the early ‘90s, Watkins interned as a seasonal police officer in Bethany Beach. He credits his success in the program to caring faculty who supported and guided a group of ten students who would eventually all become police officers. “They kept us straight and helped us succeed,” says Watkins who upon graduation was hired by the South Bethany Police Department (SBPD) and attended the Delaware State Police Academy.

In 2012, after 18 years with the SBPD, Watkins left to join the Delaware Capitol Police in Delaware’s Division of Homeland Security which is assigned to protect specific state facilities. He works as a detective in the special unit which investigates crimes against legislators and the judiciary. He also serves on the agency’s firearms unit and was awarded the 2015 Officer of the Year as a result of his work in the firearms unit.

Watkins’ Delaware Tech degree was the first of his many educational achievements which include instructor-level certifications in firearms, weaponless defense, pepper spray, Asp baton, verbal judo, radar, field training, certified evidence technician and armorer.

Delivering Excellence, Changing Lives

For anyone currently considering a law enforcement career, Watkins touts the College’s new law enforcement option (LEO) program. LEO is offered in partnership with the Delaware State Police (DSP) Training Academy and provides the education and training to be a competitive applicant for the DSP or a municipal police agency. “It’s a great program that shortens the time it has traditionally taken to become a police officer in Delaware,” he says.

As executive director of the First State Community Action Agency (First State CAA) in Georgetown, Bernice Edwards often tells people, “If you have a dream and

you’ve set your goal, don’t let anything deter you from achieving it. You might not reach it right away, but keep persevering, and it will happen.” Her clients take her seriously because Edwards doesn’t just talk the talk. She’s walked the walk.

At 38 years old, she sat down with her husband and two teenagers and told them she wanted to go to college. Since First State CAA works with individuals and communities to overcome the challenges of unemployment, homelessness, substandard living conditions/hunger, she knew human services was the degree for her.

Edwards knew that Delaware Tech was the perfect option for a working wife and mother. And as she worked her way up through the ranks at First State CAA, she finished her bachelor’s degree in behavioral science at Wilmington University.

She was presented in 2004 with Delaware Tech’s Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes Owens Campus graduates who have made significant contributions to their communities through academic and career achievements, community service, and personal accomplishments.

Even though she’s been working in human services for many years now, Edwards still feels a passion for her job. “It’s very exhausting work, but when I see someone reach a milestone that they haven’t been able to achieve before, it’s all worth it.”

Dr. Ray Fulkrod Jr. was a paramedic when he moved to Delaware 15 years ago, but he wanted to do even more within the medical profession. To achieve that

goal, he enrolled in a Terry Campus bridge program that trains and educates individuals to advance from paramedic to nurse. Several years later, Fulkrod is Assistant Vice President of Clinical Operations at Nanticoke Health Services and is accountable for services provided by several departments, including Surgical Services, Quality Management, Case Management, Bariatrics, Wound Care, Laboratory Services and Cancer Care.

The journey did not happen overnight – he became an emergency department nurse after graduation, moved into quality management and then transitioned into administration – but it started at Delaware Tech.

“I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the nursing program on the Terry Campus,” said Fulkrod. “The entire staff were an inspiration, offering many opportunities for mentorship and coaching that allowed me to grow as both a student and professional.”

It is the faculty that Fulkrod credits with helping the program’s students thrive.

“The skills and talents of the nursing instructors on the Terry Campus are absolutely critical to the success of the students who graduate - they provide the opportunity for those students to succeed,” he said. “You can feel the commitment. They just want their students to succeed and continue growing in their careers.”

As his way of saying ‘thank you’ to those faculty and staff members, Fulkrod shares his experience with the nursing program and continues to push himself to improve professionally.

“That is my way of giving back, especially to our community. I love being a nurse and I am forever grateful for the opportunity the Delaware Tech Terry Campus provided me.”

In the spring, Dr. Bobbi Barends and a group of Delaware Tech students traveled to Vietnam as part of a study abroad program. While they were there, Dr. Barends, a former occupational therapist, provided a three-hour training on positioning for feeding and play for therapists at the Thi Nghe Orphanage, a place dedicated to children with special needs. Delaware Tech students interacted with and fed the children and also donated supplies. In addition, the team facilitated an Easter egg hunt and gift-giving ceremony at the House of Love Orphanage, home to more than 120 children.

Seven board members of the Stanton/George Chapter of Delaware Tech’s Alumni Association volunteered at the Sunday Morning Breakfast Mission in Wilmington, Delaware.

Terry Campus students, faculty and staff and employees from the Office of the President collected more than 5,400 non-perishable food items to support the 19th annual DART First State and Food Bank of Delaware 2016 ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign. The truck-load of donations was delivered to the bus on Monday, November 7. The drive was organized by several groups and clubs: Student Government Association (SGA), Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Architecture & Civil Engineering (ACE), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the Culinary Club.

Delaware Tech faculty, staff, students and administrators at all four campuses sold mismatched socks and collected donations to raise over $1,200 for the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware. More than 1,300 participants proudly wore their socks to campus on March 21 in support of World Down Syndrome Day.

Delaware Tech students, faculty, administrators and friends volunteered and raised money for the Polar Bear Plunge on February 7, 2016 to benefit Special Olympics Delaware. The event raised a record $820,000 to provide year-round sports training and competitions for 3,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

On November 3, the Workforce Development and Community Education division cleared almost a mile of the nature trail at Trap Pond State Park during the division’s annual retreat. The project was a way for employees from all campus locations to give back to the state.

In celebration of the College’s 50th anniversary, the College produced a commemorative video that

included interviews with stakeholders from around the state. The following excerpts from those interviews reflect the hallmarks of our 50-year history and tell the story of how Delaware Tech would become the educational leader it is today. The complete video can be viewed at www.dtcc.edu/50th.

THE EARLY YEARSIn the early 1950’s, the William C. Jason High School was built

in Georgetown, and in the late 1960’s, it was phased out because of desegregation. The State of Delaware established a commission to study the facility and determine its future. The commission, chaired by William A. Carter, recommended the establishment of a community college in Sussex County. In 1966, the state legislature took action and established Delaware’s community college system. - Dick Carter, son of William Carter, founder of Delaware Tech

In 1967, the first Delaware Tech campus – known then as the “Southern Campus,” opened with 250-300 students. - Jack Kotula, president of Delaware Tech, 1978-1992

For those who were involved in the creation of Delaware Tech, it was referred to as “a calling.” The founders believed that Delaware Tech would change the state of Delaware and provide opportunity for the residents. One of the College’s first slogans was “A job for every graduate and a graduate for every job.” This summed up its original purpose – to provide graduates an opportunity for meaningful work. - Barbara Weatherly, daughter of Paul K. Weatherly, first president of Delaware Tech

Delivering Excellence, Changing Lives

In the early years, Delaware Tech was known also as the “University of Sussex County” because it provided the opportunity to get a degree; it was seen as the gateway to educational success. - Richard Stokes, chair of Delaware Tech Board of Trustees, 1993-1996

I joined the College in 1969 because they needed math, science and engineering instructors. There was a recognition at the time that Delaware really needed what a

community college had to offer. - Orlando J. George, Jr., president of Delaware Tech, 1995-2014

In July 1971, the nursing program started with 16 students in a large room with a roll-up door. - Lois Studte, former instructional coordinator, health care programs

The first academic counselors represented women and all minority groups so that the students had the support of people who looked like them. Even from the beginning, business, industry, state legislators and the military were all partners. - Harriet Brown, former dean of students

QUALITY, RESPONSIVE PROGRAMSEvery company needs – and has to have – access to a high

quality workforce in order for their business to thrive and grow. Our job is to convey to them that we are nimble, creative and we can turn on a dime. We have existing programs that can provide a high quality workforce, but if you need something that is customized and individualized, we can do that, too. And we have done it, and we continue to do it. - Mark Brainard, president of Delaware Tech

Delaware Tech has been able to fill the traditional, classic community college needs and as new technologies and new needs have arisen, the College has been able to move with lightning speed to fill those needs and that is really unique for a college. - Scott Green, chair of Delaware Tech Board of Trustees

I think the quality of people that teach at Delaware Tech are top notch. They take a true interest in the students who attend. The classes are smaller. And for me, personally, I needed a small class. As a criminal justice major, I was able to write a paper and learned about rape crisis. It allowed me the opportunity to join an organization where I did volunteer work for four years. It was really because of the experience that Delaware Tech offered in providing that opportunity through the curriculum. - Nicole Poore, graduate, Delaware state senator, 12th district

The courses in the academic programs are every bit as rigorous, if not more, than the university programs and they have to be. You have a quality degree at low, or no cost, that you can market to the world. - Orlando J. George, Jr., president of Delaware Tech, 1995-2014

A COMMITMENT TO ACCESSMy fondest hope was that I could instill in

the students that when they were financially able to do so in the future that they help the next generation. - Howell Wallace, scholarship donor

The SEED Scholarship was one of the things that we had talked about; Harris McDowell and Nancy Wagner had put bills in for like four or five years and couldn’t get it passed, couldn’t even get it out of committee. So when I became governor, I thought, that’s one of the things I am going to do. - Ruth Ann Minner, governor of Delaware, 2001-2009

The real, real promise of SEED is to motivate students to achieve. You can go to Delaware Tech, you can go to college, we will pay the first two years, it’s not a promise … it’s the law. - Harris McDowell, Delaware state senator, District 1

we can do to facilitate their success, they keep coming back to the same issue – they need people with the right skills. Delaware Tech is nimble, they figure it out. When we sit them down with the employers they have a great dialog; it doesn’t take them long to put together a program that makes sense for that employer. - Jack Markell, governor of Delaware, 2009-2017

Our advisory boards [of employers and industry experts] have an ongoing dialog with our faculty and they communicate to them what our graduates need to know and what they need to be able to do. - Mark Brainard, president of Delaware Tech

Because we collaborate from the beginning, we get a graduate who is high quality, who understands the needs of our health system and can hit the ground running. What is wonderful is that we can sit down with them (Delaware Tech) as partners and think through our needs together and work collaboratively to create solutions. - Janice Nevin, president and CEO, Christiana Care Health System

Delaware Tech has been very responsive to the needs of the industry. They have sat at the table with employers, heard that there is a real need for software developers, especially JAVA developers, and then responded with a JAVA programming academy. They also offer individual courses at a reasonable price so that current employees can continue to enhance their skill sets and advance their career opportunities. - Jennifer McDermott, executive director, chief administrative office talent pipeline, JPMorgan Chase & Company

It has benefited us greatly to put students into the Advanced Manufacturing program at Delaware Tech, see them leave our high schools ready to begin their career if they choose and at the same time have the experience of a college environment and the ability

to continue their education and get their two-year degree. - Merv Daugherty, superintendent of schools, Red Clay Consolidated School District

Students can either go directly into the workforce or they can continue their education. We have been able to partner with them in creating a variety of connected degree programs that align appropriately with their workforce. - Harry Williams, president, Delaware State University

They are so sensitive of the needs of our military men and women and bend over backwards to accommodate us. In fact, Delaware Tech has classes that go on in the evening at our Air National Guard base at the New Castle County airport. They make it easy, they make it affordable and they make it friendly. Some of our folks, while deployed overseas – Afghanistan, Iraq – have been able to take classes online. That’s been phenomenal. - Frank Vavala, former adjutant general, Delaware National Guard

Delivering Excellence, Changing Lives

CHANGING LIVES There are many people here

in their 20’s or 30’s. I even met one woman in her late 50’s or early 60’s. They are going back to school trying to really reinvent themselves. - Helen Connon, scholarship donor

I was the first of three kids to go to college and graduate. Even though people might say it is just an associate, I knew what it was and it was beneficial for me. And I received my bachelor’s in marketing a year and a half after I graduated. Now I’m always pushing people to go towards their dream, go for what they love whether it’s education or if it is a career. - OJ Cole, SEED Scholarship recipient, graduate

Sitting at the desk with the presidents, seeing the letters and getting telephone calls from students, graduates, parents, and grandparents thanking the president, thanking Delaware Tech, for saving their child’s life, saving their life, literally and metaphorically. Because we had many people who thought they didn’t have any chances at anything. - Janine Reed, former executive assistant to five Delaware Tech presidents

The whole family dynamic can change when the parent goes back to school and becomes a role model for their kids and their kids see the studying and the focus. - Jill Taylor, scholarship donor

“There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop into a graduate who is

ready for the job market.”

- Walt Studteformer dean of instruction

When students walk through the front doors, they see us as a way to get their life back on track. There is a source of hope for them. The best kept secret are all of those stories. - Mark Brainard, president of Delaware Tech

THE FUTUREI think what is going to be

important for Delaware Tech in the future is to continue to be a great listener as an institution because the training that is provided is only as important as what we are hearing from

employers about the skills that are needed today and the skills that will be needed in the future. - Jack Markell, governor of Delaware, 2009-2017

We are expanding, we are growing and we are a known commodity in the community. But we still don’t rest on that, we still have to go out there and be on the cutting edge for our stakeholders so that they can have the employees that they want, the students can find jobs when they graduate, and continue to help the state of Delaware prosper. - John Maiorano, vice chairman, Delaware Tech Board of Trustees

I fully expect Delaware Tech to be in on the ground floor of finding out what the next big thing is and helping the state achieve it. - Dick Carter, son of William Carter, founder of Delaware Tech
