Key Question: How do rocks and landforms affect what we do?

• Rocks and landforms affect people

• Rocks and Landforms affect the shape of the land

• Rocks and landforms effect the earth system

Landform features:Hanging Lakes is a lake above a lake creating a

waterfall. The water is fed to the top lake by snow melting then going through a series of underground caves and caverns just minutes before falling into

the top lake. The elevation of the top lake is 7,250ft

high.

Hanging Lakes most largely populated rock type is limestone, but there is also travertine a rock made of

dissolved lime stone from the Mississippian aged Leadville Formation and is deposited on rocks and

logs. Travertine also is a special rock formation The land there is constantly being eroded because of all

the fast moving waterfalls running down the mountain face. Eventually when all the sediment made by

erosion is washed away it deposits in a small lake at

the mountains end.

Water locationBridal Veil Falls gives Hanging Lakes its water mostly other

than snow melting.

HISTORICAL LAND CHANGESa historical land change that happened to

Hanging Lakes is when they built the boardwalk. They built the boardwalk in 1992 to

preserve the nature of the park.

People who are attracted to hanging lakes are mostly athletes. They are attracted to Hanging

Lakes because of the hike. The hike to Hanging Lakes is a 2.0mile hike up (4mile round trip). photographers are also attracted to Hanging

Lakes because of the stunning view at the top and also on the hiking trail because of all the small

water falls.

No people live up at Hanging Lakes but Hanging Lakes is in Glenwood Springs and

the job rates there are:

• 31 percent management• 28 percent sales • 15 percent construction, extraction and

maintenance• 75 percent companies• 12percent government• 11 percent self employed

The buildings that they mostly have in Glenwood Springs are houses and

hotelsthis is a map of all the roads in Glenwood Springs

They have lots of recreational activities at Hanging Lakes like:

A hiking tour and a photograph class learning how to take nature photos.

When I went to Hanging Lakes we did the hike up to the top. There were may beautiful waterfalls

running down near the trail into a little pond at the bottom. When we got to the top the water was a

green color, the waterfall was absolutely magnificent, and the dam built to hold the water in the pond was over flowing making the waterfalls near the trail. There were huge logs in the water with moss all over them. There was another log near the top of the waterfall ready to snap under

the force of the waterfall. When we hiked up to the top lake there were little holes in the side of a rock face with gallons of water spewing out. That was

the time I went to Hanging Lakes.

EARTH SYSTEM CONNECTIONS

BIOSPHERE

MY CONNECTION BETWEEN BIOSPHERE AND HANGING LAKES IS: HANGING LAKES IS HOME TO MANY WILDLIFE CEATURES AND IS VISITED EVERY

DAYBY LOTS OF PEOPLE.

GEOSPHERE

MY CONNECTION BETWEEN GEOSPHERE AND HANGING LAKES IS: THE WATER

THAT MAKES HANGING LAKES, HANGING LAKES RUNS THROUGH UNDERGROUND

ROCK CAVES AND CAVERNS.

HYDROSPHERE

MY CONNECTION BETWEEN HYDROSPHERE AND HANGING LAKES IS: HANGING LAKES IS A FEATURE MADE UP OF WATER WITHOUT WATER HANGING LAKES WOULD NOT BE HANING LAKES.

ATMOSPHERE

MY CONNECTION BETWEEN ATMOSPHERE AND HANGING LAKES
