Hernando Cortes, one of the first conquistadors, claimed land for

Spain that included California.

In 1769, Fr. Serra established the first mission in San Diego, the beginning of Spanish influence in Southern California. The California Native Americans learned how to farm and raise cattle. Father Serra converted them to Christianity.
