Our Baptismal Commitment: Part II

The sacrament of Baptism is a sacrament of initiation (the other two are Eucharist and Confirmation.) Those who wish to be followers of Jesus must go through the initiation of Baptism. Through our Baptism, we become sons and daughters of God and are given the grace and strength to carry out the commitment that, as Christians, we are asked to make. Because of our Baptismal commitment, we are called to go out and bring God’s good news to others and help make His presence known to them. We are the ones called to open the eyes of the blind, the ones who are living their lives in darkness, not knowing the Lord. We are the ones who are to help bring prisoners out of spiritual confinement, for only in Jesus do we have true freedom. God does the healing and freeing, but so often He works through us. Jesus Himself went through Baptism and this shows most clearly His humanity, His willingness to put Himself in our place and to experience all of human life, except sin. Jesus clearly identifies with us. Let us pray that we might be strengthened so that we can live out our Christian Baptismal commitment to love all people and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with them. Let us pray that we may recognize that we are sons and daughters of God through our Baptism, and that makes us brothers and sisters to one another. Father David

A Prayer for Life Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty,

and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands,

and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

During the weekend of January 26-27 (not January 19/20 as was initially publicized) our diocese will take

up the national Collection for the Church in Latin America. Last year, when Pope Francis opened

registrations for World Youth Day in Panama, he said, “WYD is for the courageous! Not for young people who

are searching only for comfort and who withdraw whenever difficulties arise. Do you accept the challenge?”

You have helped young people accept the challenge to grow in faith by your ongoing support for the

Collection for the Church in Latin America. Your generosity is helping the young people of the

Archdiocese of Panama build relationships with one another, with their peers throughout Latin

America, and with the rest of the world as they prepare for World Youth Day 2019. This is a

tremendous event in the life of the Church, and these young people are now experiencing it to the

fullest! You have given them the opportunity to grow as leaders and to develop missionary hearts.

Please be generous in this collection. Take this opportunity to share your faith with young people in

Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God

bless you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon

Bishop of Joliet

A Heartfelt Thank You from the St. James Art & Environment Committee

Thank you to all those individuals and families who showed up last Sunday afternoon to help us take down Christmas from the church and narthex. Your help was invaluable and prevented our Art and Environment team from having to clean until past dark. May God bless you for giving of yourselves and your time!

Administration Ministries

Prayerfully consider your support of the 2019 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

The Diocese of Joliet is mailing information about the 2019 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) to all registered parishioners this month. As you know, the CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours, and are Signs of Hope to our brothers and sisters most in need.

Please remember that 70 percent of any amount we raise over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish! Please review the materials you receive and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year’s annual appeal.

If you do not receive a mailing from the diocese about the CMAA, please contact the parish office.

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]

In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and that they are given, not for ourselves alone, but for the common good. The generosity of God knows no limits – the miracle of Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine!

The collection amount for the weekend of January 12/13 is $11,564.00

Thank you for your generosity-it is deeply appreciated!

End of the Year Giving

Please note that all 2018 Weekly, Christmas and Blue Envelope offerings received in the Ministry Center after December 31st are being credited to your 2019 parish contribution account. Contribution letters will be sent out mid-January to any registered parishioner who donated to the parish in 2018.

2020 Daily Mass Book to Open

The 2020 Daily Mass Record will be opened on Monday, January 28th in the Ministry Center. Office hours are 8:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Friday. During the initial period of the Mass Book opening, January 28th to February 11th, no more than four Mass intentions per person will be accepted in order that all may have an equal opportunity for the available dates. In order that all may have the opportunity to request weekend Masses, we also ask that you limit your requests to two weekend dates and two weekday Masses.

If you are unable to stop in during office hours, you may mail your four intentions to the Ministry Center, ATTN: Rubi, with a check made out to St. James the Apostle. Please use the form provided in the bulletin as we need the date requested, the name for the intention and the “Requested by” information. Once the initial period is over, the book will be available for additional intentions.
