Dan Lash, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message Our lunch meeting on July 14th at Westwood CC in Vienna, Virginia featured speaker Michael Finke, Ph.D and Matt Stephani,
CFA. Dr. Finke discussed a New Perspective on Retirement Income Planning. Matt as a senior portfolio manager with Cavanal
Hill Funds and co-manager of their World Energy Fund focused his discussion on Global Energy Consumption. Both were
outstanding and you can find the slides for their presentations at www.fpanca.org under Events on the Program Handout Page.
With summer vacation time upon us, we will not be holding any formal meetings with CE in August. We do have a member
Reunion scheduled for August 17 for those long tenured members who remember the days of the ICFP and the IAFP before the
merger of the two associations to what we know today as the FPA. The Reunion will be held August 17 at 5pm at Chima
Restaurant. Please register at www.fpanca.org/events.
Don’t miss our September 7 Happy Hour at a new location, Brazin’s on Church in Vienna, Virginia. This Happy Hour will offer
one hour of CE during the event. John Dedon will present an Estate Planning presentation while we enjoy drinks and appetizers.
There will still be time for mingling before and after the presentation. We are excited to bring you this new format for one of our
Happy Hours with a CE presentation while we have time to network and mingle, as well. Please register on line at
www.fpanca.org/events. Registration will be limited to the first 50 people due to space limitations.
During September 14-16 the National FPA annual conference will be held in Baltimore. Registration is currently open at
www.fpa-be.org/register. You can receive $25 off of your registration fee by utilizing the code CHBE16. This conference has
some fantastic key note speakers and many breakout and roundtable sessions and will certainly help planners of all stages of
their careers gain knowledge to allow you to further help your clients.
September 22 will be our next luncheon meeting and will be held at Bethesda CC. Our speaker will be Bob Ciullo with Charles
Schwab Advisor Services. Bob’s presentation will utilize data captured from both clients and successful advisors to provide
attendee’s with actionable ideas to develop your business. Bob calls the discussion, What Your Clients Are Really Looking For
in an Advisor – Time to Diversify Your Firm! Please join us for the event by registering at www.fpanca.org/events.

Trends in Adviser Compensation and Benefits Study Now Available!
FPA members can now access the 2015 Trends in Adviser Compensation and Benefits Study, which was done by
the FPA Research and Practice Institute™ and Financial Advisor IQ (a news service of the Financial Times). The
research helps all planners and their support staff understand trends in compensation and benefits.
While the study sought to create a valuable compensation benchmark resource for those currently working in the
financial advice profession, or seeking a position, the study examined the impact that compensation, benefits and
work environment have on job satisfaction and engagement.
The full report, which is now available at www.OneFPA.org/2015CompensationStudy, is a must read for anyone
working in the financial advisory space. Download a copy of the report and see how your compensation and
benefits package stacks up with other firms across the country.

From the Programs Committee!
Lisa Kirchenbauer and Melissa Sotudeh
Join us as we kickoff our Fall program schedule starting with some hot-off-the-presses data from Bob Ciullo of
Schwab Advisor Services leading a talk on “What Your Clients Are Really Looking for in an Advisor”.
RIA firms are recognizing the need to diversify their talent portfolio to address changing client demographics.
Creating a culture of inclusivity at your firm will help support your hiring and retention strategies. Increasingly
clients are desirous of working with Advisors who are of the same gender, age range and ethnicity. We will share
our perspectives and suggestions on creating an inclusive culture which clients want.
And to help you get on top of fall tax planning… Professor Don Williamson on “Current Developments in Taxation
That Will Impact Your Clients’ Investment & Business Decisions.” As Eminent Professor of Taxation & the
Howard S. Dvorkin Faculty Fellow of the Kogod School of Business at American University, Professor Williamson
will help us the bridge the gap of the unknown as we approach a pivotal election. Professor Williamson's remarks
will describe recent developments in the federal tax law that will influence your clients’ investment and business
decisions and how a Clinton or Trump administration might affect those decisions.
As we look ahead into the Fall, we will be joined by speakers like thought-leader, John Anderson of SEI
Investments talking about “The Next Wave in Financial Planning” based on SEI’s well-known whitepaper that
helps us bridge the gap between the present and the future of our profession, as well as topics on using insurance in
legacy planning, Environmental/Social/Governance Investing, the new realities of estate planning and a post-
election look at the potential impact for the economy and financial markets. It’s going to be a set of lunches that
you won’t want to miss! Look for more details soon.
MANY FPA NCA MEMBERS AT NexGen GATHERING!
Thank you to the FPA-NCA NexGen members who showed their support on a national level by attending NexGen
Gathering which was held this year in Dallas, TX. We had an excellent weekend of open conversations to transfer
our knowledge and to build relationships with FPA members across the country. Below is the group of National
Capital Area Attendees - we had 10% of the attendance, and represented well with our contributions! Thanks to all
that made the journey!

The FPA NCA 20th Century Club Reunion! Join us!
It’s time to party like you remember 1999! August 17 at Chima from 5-7pm.
A lot of people responded to the invitation sent in May for a party for planners who were active in the 1990’s
and before, with comments like “sounds like fun,” “a great idea,” and “count me in!” What was then just an
idea is now an event, and we hope you can join us.
Do you remember the Mid-Atlantic Retreat? Were you a member of the ICFP or the IAFP, before there was a
Financial Planning Association? Did you earn your CFP designation during the last millennium? Would you
like to spend a pleasant evening catching up with old friends and colleagues? I enjoyed seeing a number of
people at the Spring Symposium, but didn’t have enough time to talk to everyone I wanted to. If you are
willing to admit having been around in the 80’s and 90’s, you’re invited, whether you are still in active practice
or not.
We’ll meet at Chima at Tysons, where the FPA NCA has held a number of events, from 5 to 7 on Wednesday,
August 17. The chapter board is sponsoring some snacks for us. It would be helpful if you would register on
line for this event so that we plan appropriate refreshments! We look forward to this event and hope to see you
soon!
Best,
Dick

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FPA NCA
MEMBER YUSUF ABUGIDEIRI!
INVESTMENT NEWS: 40 Under 40 2016!
Yusuf Abugideiri - age 29
Financial planner, Yeske Buie
Yusuf Abugideiri didn’t find his job; his job found him.
“I was speaking at Virginia Tech on behalf of the college of financial planning and spent the information session
talking about planning and why it was so exciting,” Mr. Abugideiri said.
As it happened, Elissa Buie, one of the founders of Yeske Buie in Vienna, Va., was in the audience. “She enjoyed the
talk enough to offer me an internship,” he said.
One of his proudest achievements: Getting the financial planning residency at Yeske Buie off the ground. The
program helps young planners learn to be financial planners and fulfill their work requirements for the certified
financial planner designation. The residents are paid and given the same responsibilities as an entry-level planner.
“We think of it in the same way as a medical resident,” Mr. Abugideiri said.
Their first resident finished the program this year. They expect to have five by the end of the year.
Mr. Abugideiri is pursuing a master’s degree in economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and hopes to
graduate in December. He works both as co-chair of the alumni board for the university and with the local Financial
Planning Association. And when he’s not working as a financial planner, sitting on two boards and doing graduate
studies, what does he do? “Hang out with my wife, Maegan,” he says. “We’re both pretty busy people.”

NEW PLANNER SEARCH ON ONE FPA WEBSITE!
What is FPA PlannerSearch®?
FPA PlannerSearch® is a website that not only provides educational content to consumers on personal financial matters,
but also helps them find and engage CFP® professionals in their area. Through robust search functionality, consumers who
are looking for financial planning guidance and support can search for CFP® professionals who can help.
What role does FPA PlannerSearch® play for me?
The site was constructed to increase the online visibility of CFP® professionals who are also members of FPA. By using
best practices in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data, the site increases the likelihood of
CFP® members of FPA being found online through Google searches. By way of this increased visibility new business
opportunities may emerge.
Who is able to participate in FPA PlannerSearch®?
In order to participate, you must be an FPA member in good standing and a CFP® professional. Members are not
automatically added to the platform, they must opt in. To opt in, please contact the FPA Member Engagement Team at
[email protected]. You can also opt-in online by visiting www.onefpa.org/business-
success/Pages/PlannerSearch.
Why has the platform been changed/improved?
In an increasingly competitive digital landscape, CFP® professionals need to be able to be found online. The changes we
have made to the architecture of the site and search functionality will now better support our members by providing more
visibility online which will lead to new business growth opportunities.
What, specifically, has been done to improve the platform?
As we set out on redeveloping the site and search tool, we did so with three distinct goals:
First was to increase planner findability. The new website’s foundation is built from the perspective of traffic
acquisition. Best practices of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data will drive the
architecture of the website so members can be found more often and in more places across the web.
Second was to improve usability. User experience is paramount to findability and engagement. Consumers will enjoy a
streamlined experience and be able to easily accomplish their goal of researching, contacting, and partnering with a
financial planner that meets their unique individual needs.
Third was to expand accessibility. Users seeking to find a financial planner from their desktop, tablet, or smartphone will
be treated to a seamless user experience at their convenience. This will drive increased traffic, interactions, client leads and
– ultimately – help members grow their businesses.
What are some of the new features?
There are a couple new features that you should definitely pay attention to:
Now every planner has a unique URL path to their profile on FPA PlannerSearch®. That means you can share your
profile on the site with anyone by simply providing the URL. It is advisable to provide a link to your profile on
your website, blog, and any other way you can be found online.
Your profile now has a “My Links” section where you can share other places where you are found online. You can
share links to recent media appearances, news items where you appear, personal blog posts, and much more. This
section in particular is very important to helping drive SEO for your profile so be sure to keep it up to date with
your latest links!
Your profile also has a “Brochures” section where you can provide brochures and other content specific to your
business.
Also, when a consumer searches for a planner, they will be provided an interactive map where they can view
CFP® professionals within proximity to them. So just because someone may be viewing another planner from your
immediate area, they will now be able to quickly check out your profile as well.

Continued from previous page
How do I view/edit my profile on the platform?
Updating your profile is the same as the previous iteration of FPA PlannerSearch®. Simply log in to OneFPA.org and click
on “My Profile.” Information that is populated on FPA PlannerSearch® will be identified as such. There is also a
“PlannerSearch” tab on “My Profile” where you can populate information for the “My Links” and “Brochures” sections.
As always, you can get assistance by contacting a member of the FPA Member Engagement Team at
How do I get any new client leads?
The process is the same as before. You will get an email with an alert that a consumer is interested in you and your services.
You will then login to OneFPA.org and click on the “My Leads” tab at the top of the page to view your leads and contact
them.
What are the specifications for my profile picture?
To ensure your profile picture looks as good as possible, please only use a photo that is in JPEG or PNG format and
approximately 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. We recommend that the body and head is centered in the image and not cropped
too closely, with a comfortable amount of spacing around the edges.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my brochures in the “Brochures” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 50 pixels by 50 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my links in the “My Links” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 60 pixels by 60 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.

Get the Latest Original Research on Investing by RPI and Journal of Financial Planning
The FPA Research and Practice Institute™ (RPI) has been engaging in original research on a wide array of subjects of
importance to financial planners and the latest study is now available. The 2015 Trends in Investing Survey, done in
collaboration with the Journal of Financial Planning, looks at how financial planners are using and recommending different
investment vehicles today and where they will look to invest over the coming year. The survey, which has been conducted
regularly since 2006, revealed that Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have supplanted mutual funds as the preferred investment
vehicle by planners.
And keep an eye out for more research coming out later this year, including a social media study that was conducted in
partnership with LinkedIn and a Social Security study that is being done with AARP and CNBC.
