A PERFECT OPENING DAY FOR BIG HARD DIRTY AND IRON WAFFLE Under a sunkissed Tuesday morning, the four day, 8-game season of the 2015 Brewers Fantasy Camp started off with a bang. By the end of the day, two teams are sharing the top spot with 2 wins, two others are level at 1-1, and the last two teams are hibernating at the bottom of the standings. Big Hard Dirty, managed by Bob Skube and Greg Vaughn, lead all teams with 18 total runs in two games, highlighted by an 11-5 afternoon spanking of Boy Toyz. In their morning session, Big Hard Dirty was able to squeak by Sweet and Sour for a 7-5 win. The Dirty’s Garret Newkirk leads the team with a .714 batting average, while slugging 1.000. Iron Waffle, managed by Jerry Augustine and Pete Ladd, are right behind the Dirty with 17 total runs. The Waffle also had a big afternoon banging out 24 hits en route to a 13-11 win over Sweet and Sour. Gary Anderson toed the rubber in the Waffles’ morning game, finishing with a complete game, 10-strikeout 5-hitter, only allowing one earned run in beating J-Bonz 4-2. Smashin’ Assassins won their morning game over the Boy Toyz, busting out for 12 runs on 11 hits in their 12-7 victory. The squad, led by Jeff Cirillo and Rob Deer, took one on the chin in the afternoon, losing 6-4 to the Darryl Hamilton and Jeremy Reed skippered J-Bonz. The Assassins are wreaking havoc to the batting average leaderboard with four of their players in the Top 10, led by Brad Polczynski’s .833 average, which tops all campers after day one. The J-Bonz’s Mike Keith and Dan Zier are also in the top 10 of the leaderboard, each batting .667 after two games. Sweet and Sour, headed by Rick Sweet and Jim Gantner, is tied with the Assassins for third in total runs with 16 after two games, but don’t have a win to show for it. Greg Beaubien leads the team in batting with a .500 average. During the afternoon game, the Boy Toyz’s Jeanie Hatfield tried to spark her team by offering to change the team’s As Bud Selig gets ready to hand over the reigns of Commissioner of Major League Baseball to Rob Man- fred, Selig’s made a number of changes to America’s Pastime during his 22-year tenure as Acting Commis- sioner and Commissioner. From instituting the Wild Card (1994) to Interleague Play (1997) to declaring a tie in the 2002 All-Star Game, which led to awarding the winning league of future All- Star Games with home-field advantage throughout the World Series, some of Selig’s decisions have been met with dissatisfaction by some, and applause by many. So what would you do if you could change or imple- ment one rule in Major League Baseball? Here’s what some of the campers had to say: Josh Schwiesow - Add a salary cap. Limit uniforms to two styles per team, not a dozen with alter- nates. Also keep those batting hel- mets clean. I want to see the logo. I’d make Milwaukee go back to the 80s style. Eliminate the designat- ed hitter (DH) and instant replay. Also, if you want to pitch, you have to bat. If you want to bat, play the field. Terry Jannsen - Ban the DH. As a professional, you should play all parts of the game. Ryan Anderson - If a batter is clearly attempting to avoid being hit by a pitch, the pitch should be called a ball even if the pitch hits the batter’s bat. Glenn Soderstrom - A batter cannot step out of the bat- ter’s box to adjust his batting gloves. Mike Martin - Speed up the game. I look back at my old box scores — most games were between two hours and twenty minutes. To do that, you’d have to minimize the between innings promotions, widen the strike zone, and limit the time between pitches to about 15 to 20 seconds. Malcolm Hatfield - They need to show the replay in the stadium. Too bad if the ump makes a mistake. Why should the fans in the stands not get the same replay as those at home? That sucks. Are they afraid we will hurt the umps feelings? I don’t get it. Tim Adamany - NO MORE RULE CHANGES! The only new rule I’d consider is to eliminate the need for a pitch- er to throw four balls for an intentional walk. Just put the batter on base if that’s the intention. Frankly, I hate all the proposed “speed-up-the-game” rule changes. I never want to see a play clock implemented or force a manager to make quick decisions based on a clock. Randy Dummer - When trying to break up a double play, if you can’t touch second base after you complete your ‘slide,’ then the double play is considered to be executed by the defense. John Clark - No games shall be played on artificial turf. All MLB stadiums must have a natural grass surface. Brian Karpinski - Eliminate the DH Bob Neuman - If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!! Bob Kniprath - Get rid of the All-Star game determining the home field in the World Series. The only way that works is if they start playing it to win, instead of trying to appease everyone by playing all the players and screw- ing up the lineup. It is one or the other. ‘Colonel’ Bishop - Do away with the winning league in the All-Star Game having home field advantage in the World Series. Award it based on best record. Joe Wojtasiak - Enforce the time limits for pitchers. Don’t need to read a book and adjust after every pitch. Randy Oswald - The pitcher has the option to wave a batter to first base for an intentional walk. Ed Oswald - Eliminate the designated hitter. Craig Salzer - DH in NL parks during interleague play and no DH in AL parks. Jeff Matthews - Drop the DH! Tom Kilbey - Change the requirements for a statistical save in relief where the winning run has to be on base, not on deck. Ed Smith - Get rid of the designated hitter. Also, see better revenue sharing and the elimination of a few very wealthy teams being able to attract the better players by having more money. The drug screening that goes on now seems a bit unsatisfactory. Now I really don’t have a concern that drugs are used, and I will say I fa- vor not having them involved. Athletics are supposed to be about an individual training the body to perform, not to simply take a substance that alters performance. So instead of the random testing that goes on now, I would suggest, in an effort to reduce the amount of testing that goes on, each Sunday of the season, all of the first place teams in each division have all the players that played in the last 7 days take a drug test. If any play- er fails such a test, there would be no penalty for the player, but have the results of all of the games that week for a team with a failing tested player be changed to a loss for the team. I am pretty sure the teams themselves would clean up an potential drug issue if there was any chance to go to win the division. And teams at the bottom of the division would have no incentive to tolerate drug users, as it would be apparent that the drug usage was not helping them win. Jeff Hahn - Allow pitchers to move toward third and throw to first on a pick-off attempt. Joel Winn - The intentional walk automatic. Bruce Gilbert - Pitcher time clock and restrictions for batter stepping out of the batter’s box. Steve Gilboy - If pitchers come in and get pitches to warm up, then pinch-hitters should be able to get some batting practice in until they are ready. Gary Polczynski - Designated hitter in both leagues. Dan Rooks - Tie player salaries to performance on and off the field. Gary Polczynski - Designated hitter in both leagues. Brad Polczynski - Allow Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame. Chris Grossmann - Allow players to re-enter game. Roger Rustad - Eliminate the designated hitter. David Wall - Tighten luxury tax/salary cap structure to better maintain competitive balance. I would also make a change to pitcher scoring, so that if the pitcher com- mitted the error that leads to an unearned run, that run would actually be earned. John Gruentzel - Eliminate the designated hitter. Joseph Coffey - Eliminate the designated hitter. Jason Connell - Hitter must keep one foot in batter’s box at all times. Thomas Schroeder - No DH.
