ST. EDWARD PARISH, A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust AUGUST 9, 2020 HERMINIE, PA NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

How do we encounter God in the midst of the trials and storms of our lives? Our readings help us reflect upon God’s presence with us in difficult times. We hear of the prophet Elijah, who had just boldly demonstrated God’s power, and is now terrified as he flees for his life, desperately seeking God’s presence. We hear of Peter, after briefly walking on water during the storm, sinking fast as fear overwhelms him. At times our fears, sadness, or fatigue might severely test even our strongest desires to care for others and to serve God. Perhaps these are the moments when, as we encounter our weakness, we may open ourselves more deeply to God’s strength. Often with difficulty, and perhaps over a lifetime, we can learn to depend on God, who always extends a loving hand toward us, especially during the storms of our lives. A “LITTLE” FAITH In Matthew’s Gospel, Peter often serves as a representative of Jesus’ other disciples, and of all who strive to follow Jesus. When Peter desires to imitate Jesus by walking on the water in the middle of the storm, maybe wishing to show how strong his faith is, he encounters his own limitations and his need to be rescued by Jesus. Jesus then says to Peter, with tenderness as well as with challenge, “O you of little faith.” Jesus accepted the fragile and limited faith of Peter and the other disciples and loved them unconditionally. The early church identified with Peter, as people with a “little” faith. Their faith was not fully mature, or as extraordinary as others’ faith might seem to be. But they knew that their faith, however small or imperfect, was real and true. We might remember that our own “little” faith is cherished by God. God loves us as we are, and always seeks to form us toward a fully mature Christian life of faith.

Thank you for your generosity! When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of His presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen to how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has intended for you.

$4M Available for Catholic School Tuition Assistance in 2020-2021!

A groundbreaking scholarship opportunity has been established for students who wish to attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Greensburg called the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership (TOP). Locally that assistance could assist your child in becoming a TOP student at Queen of Angels Catholic School in North Huntingdon.

Queen of Angels is a community guided by faith. Traditional Catholic values set the standard for an academically challenging curriculum. We provide a quality education in a family-centered environment. Queen of Angels is dedicated to helping each child reach their full spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical potential. We instill in our students a lifelong love of learning, an honorable character and a willingness to serve. Our school is an educational ministry of St. Agnes, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Barbara, St. Edward and Immaculate Conception parishes. Tuition assistance is available! The TOP student initiative was founded by an anonymous donor, himself a product of a Catholic education who was profoundly influenced by Saint Pope John Paul II. The donor believes his faith, education and moral foundation gave him a great advantage in life. He and more than 100 other people have become strong supporters of Catholic Schools. Saint Pope John Paul II left a legacy of being one of the most important world leaders in the second half of the 20th century. He was a man of conviction and principle who built bridges of peace between people of different countries and religions. He was a preacher and a teacher who drew historic crowds of men, women and children all yearning to be closer to God. He was front and center on the global stage as a defender of human dignity writing that, “Every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church’s very heart.”

Please call the school office at 724-978-0144 to make an appointment for a tour of one of our Pre-K 3 - Grade 8 classrooms and learn more about being a TOP student.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Through the prophet Isaiah, God reassures us in troubling times:

Do not be afraid — I am with you!

I am your God — let nothing terrify you!

I will make you strong and help you;

I will protect you and save you

Isaiah 41:10

Our faith in God can be a source of comfort and strength in the

days and weeks ahead. Sacred Heart of Jesus, protect us. St.

Edward, pray for us.

AN INVITATION TO BECOME CATHOLIC

Are you interested in joining our Catholic Faith? Are you a non-Catholic who has been attending Mass with your spouse and family? Were you baptized Catholic but never received your First Communion or Confirmation? Have you been away from the Church and are considering returning? Plans are underway for our RCIA Inquiry Sessions to begin this Fall season. These sessions constitute the first stage in a spiritual journey of adults who wish to know more about our Catholic faith. They may be the un-baptized, those baptized in another denomination, or baptized Catholics who have never received First Communion or Confirmation. Please contact Mrs. Cheryl Hall, the Director of Faith Formation at 724-446-5197 or email at [email protected].

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

On Saturday, August 15th, we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this Solemnity, we profess our belief that Mary has gone before us, body and soul, into heaven. Some days we’d like to be assumed into heaven with Mary and avoid life’s pain. Until our days are spent, however, our vocation must focus on this earth, saying as she said “Be it done unto me according to Your will.” May this feast day remind us not only of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven, but also of her blessed obedience and willingness to serve right were she was. May her example light our road as we travel toward the day we rejoin her in heaven. The Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year since it falls on a Saturday. As we think about Mary’s Assumption, we remember that this is the Fourth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary. Is the rosary a part of your prayer life?

The Food Truck Rally held here at St. Edward on July 26th was a great success! A few bills are still out, but the parish profit is around $8,000.00. Seven trucks were scheduled. The Ash & Kris Kitchen Greek/Mediterranean Truck broke down and could not participate and so we contacted Jayme Geiger from J-Jay’s Pizza in Herminie who stepped in to help us out. Two of the trucks were sold out by 3pm and 1 truck was sold out by 4pm. The Food Trucks helped the parish by giving us 10% of their profits. So far, a total of $824.00 was received from them. The soft serve Ice Cream machine was not working and will need repaired for our next event. BASKET RAFFLE - The profit was $2,525.00! Thank you to all the parishioners and organizations that supported the Basket Raffle. We had 35 baskets that were donated. Those who donated baskets and the winners are enclosed in the bulletin this weekend. 50/50 DRAWING - Father Richard won the drawing and received $330.00! GIFT CARD RAFFLE - Thank you to all the parishioners who donated Gift Cards for the parish. We received 73 Gift Cards and the profit was $348.00. A list of Gift Card winners is enclosed in the bulletin this weekend. INSTANT BINGO - A profit of $180.00 was received. ENTERTAINMENT - A special thanks to the Woods Family Trio.
