When will rehearsals begin: Please see attached rehearsal schedule. Once the cast list is released a more specific rehearsal schedule will be sent out. Who should I ask if I have questions: Any and all questions should be submitted to Seth Deason at [email protected]. Please refrain from asking Nicole Stratton questions regarding performance times, dates, or details.

Should I pack a meal for rehearsals: Please pack a supper for rehearsals. Microwaves are available to heat up meals. What does it mean to be an understudy: In theatre, an understudy is a performer who learns the lines and blocking/choreography of a regular actor or actress in a play. Should the regular actor or actress be unable to appear on stage because of illness or emergency, the understudy takes over the part. Understudies will not perform unless an unforseen circumstance occurs. Are there family discounts for tickets: Immediate family (parents and siblings) can purchase full price tickets for a 50% discount. To receive this discount, you must call the box office. This discount cannot be combined with other discounts.

AUDITION SCENE 1 Mr. Bertram: Adult Male Augustus: Adult Male Toby: Adult Male Mother Manikin: Adult Female Rosalie: Female, 8-14 MR. BERTRAM: Mr. Augustus Joyce! AUGUSTUS: Mr. Bertram! To what do I owe this great honor? Have you come to see the show? MR. BERTRAM: Mr. Joyce. AUGUSTUS: How very kind of you! Toby, please show Mr. Bertram to the best seat in the house! MR. BERTRAM: You know I’m not here for the show, Joyce - I’ve come for the rent. AUGUSTUS: And I’ll be happy to get that to you - just as soon as I’ve finished the show! MR. BERTRAM: Ehh - I know your game. There won’t be a show this time until I am paid in full. AUGUSTUS: I’m sorry, you’ll have to excuse me - I hear my cue! MR. BERTRAM: Augustus! TOBY: All we have left is the food money. AUGUSTUS: (thinking for a moment) Then give it to him. We’ll just have to pay it back from our earnings tonight. (turning to Mr. B) It’s been a pleasure Mr. Bertram - as always - but ahh, Toby will be taking things from here. MR BERTRAM: (calling after him) Augustus! (Augustus jumps up on to the stage and begins to address the crowd) AUGUSTUS: Ladies and Gentlemen - boys and girls - welcome to the final act of today’s riveting show ‘The Grecian Lovers’ As I look out over the sea of faces, I realize that YOU are the privileged few — (As Augustus is speaking the turntable begins to rotate revealing Mother Manikin Rosalie and Toby behind the stage. Mother Manikin is sitting up on a beam her legs swinging and she is eating a sandwich. She speaks to Rosalie and Toby while Augustus’ voice is still heard, but quieter in the background.) MOTHER MANIKIN: Privileged few indeed! I’ve seen funerals that were better attended! ROSALIE: Sshhh!!

A Peep Behind the Scenesby O.F. Walton

Adapted for stage by Nicole Chavers Stratton

AUGUSTUS: You are the true lovers of beauty and adventure - the ones who have been fortunate enough to secure a seat at this our final show here today! But before we pack our things and move on to new horizons - there is a special lady among our troop who would like to bid ONE FINAL FAREWELL to all the children here with us today! So put your hands together for the CHARMING the ALARMING - Little MOTHER MANIKAN. MOTHER MANIKIN: Hello hello my dearies! What a fine group of youngsters we have here tonight! I say have any of you ever wanted to be a performer like me on the stage? (many kids raise their hands) MOTHER MANIKIN: Well. I’m so sorry my dearies, but if you’re over 4 feet tall - it will never happen! (Everyone laughs) MOTHER MANIKIN: But truly old age must have it’s liberties and so they have given me permission to bring up one volunteer to help me in tonight’s show! So, who will join us on the stage tonight? (audience members raise their hands) Rosalie - will you do the honors of picking a lovely volunteer? AUDITION SCENE 2 Augustus: Adult Male Norah: Adult Female Toby: Young Adult Male AUGUSTUS: Norah - where have you been? I hope you plan to play your part to-night? NORAH: I’m not sure I can, Augustus, (he reacts and she continues) You would know it, if you stayed with me long enough; I've been coughing nearly the whole day. AUGUSTUS: I — (stopping himself from saying what he wants to say because he sees people watching) — I wish you would get better soon; it's very awkward to have to fill your part. Last time Conrad had to take it, and every one could see — he wasn’t used to it. (grabbing her arm) Now, will you be performing or not? NORAH: I - I will be in my place. AUGUSTUS: Be sure you are! I need this show to finish strong, Norah! So here (he hands her her costume piece) Oh, and be sure to smile a little extra at the gentlemen on the front row - I hear their pockets are quite deep. TOBY: (Coming in to see Norah preparing to go on stage. He does not see Augustus) Miss Norah - You aren’t trying to — AUGUSTUS: (said while walking away) Toby, we mustn’t disturb our leading lady when she’s preparing to meet her public! TOBY: I just thought she could use some rest -

Page 13: A Peep Behind the Scenestheacademyofarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A...A Peep Behind the Scenes Audition Information We are so glad to welcome you as we prepare for A Peep Behind

3

AUGUSTUS: (laughing sarcastically) You’ll soon find Toby - That women are always fancying themselves to be ill. Especially when there’s work that needs to be done. Yes, It’s half laziness if you ask me. But Norah knows how important her work is - She knows what I stand to lose, what we all stand to lose should she give in to that lazy spirit of hers. So she’ll be right as rain come curtain time - won’t she? NORAH: I will be in my place Augustus. AUGUSTUS: That’s the spirit - love. AUDITION SCENE 3 Reverend: Adult Male Conrad: Adult Male Rosalie: Female, 8-14 Norah: Adult Female Jessie: Female, 13-18 (Rosalie is seen standing behind stage looking on as her mother takes her final bows. The reverend approaches her.) REV: Here this is for you, and your Mother. (he hands her a small package of food.) CONRAD: Alright ya lazy good for nothins (speaking to the other stage hands.) Let’s get this torn down and packed up! ROSALIE: (To the Rev) Thank you sir. CONRAD: What did he want? ROSALIE: Just wanted to help is all. CONRAD: Well, keep him out of my backstage, ya hear. That’s all we need is some Reverend snoopin’ around. (Norah finishes her bow and she comes back to try and leave with Rosalie) NORAH: Rosalie - will you lend me your hand. ROSALIE: Of course, Mummy. Here lean on me. (Norah begins to cough) Oh Mummy - we must get you home. TOBY: Mrs Joyce - this young lady was hoping to meet you if she could. (Norah stops and turns around to greet the young girl.) ROSALIE: Toby, mother is - NORAH: No, it’s alright. Jessie isn’t it? JESSIE: Yes mum! Would you sign my program?

Page 14: A Peep Behind the Scenestheacademyofarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A...A Peep Behind the Scenes Audition Information We are so glad to welcome you as we prepare for A Peep Behind

4

NORAH: Of course. Did you enjoy the show Jessie? JESSIE: Oh yes Mum! It was like a dream! (to Rosalie) Thank you so much for calling me up on stage! This was the best night of my life! NORAH: Here you are. (handing her back the program) JESSIE: Thank you! Will we see you again next year - when the show comes round again? NORAH: I do hope so. You take care now Jessie. JESSIE: Goodbye! AUDITION SCENE 4 Investor 1: Adult Male Investor 2: Adult Male Augustus: Adult Male Francis: Adult Female INVESTOR 1: I have to say Augustus, I’m quite disappointed your wife couldn’t make it. INVESTOR 2: But you performers have to rest sometime I suppose. AUGUSTUS: (noticeably bothered) Yes. FRANCIS: Augustus - Augustus Joyce? Well as I live and breath! AUGUSTUS: Francis Grey?! (they hug) FRANCIS: Dyre now darling - but my husbands - God rest his soul is another story! What on earth are you doing here? AUGUSTUS: I might ask you the same thing? FRANCIS: Oh, well, these two dragged me down here to talk to some showman about buying his traveling act. It seems like ever since my husband’s death all they’ve done is find ways for me to spend his money! (she stops and looks at Augustus) Wait — No - it isn’t YOU is it? (Augustus begins to laugh) It’s YOUR show they’re wanting to buy. (she laughs) INVESTOR 1: I take it you two know one another. AUGUSTUS: We were in the same acting troupe years ago. FRANCIS: Come now Augustus - it hasn’t been that long has it? (turning to one of the Gentlemen) I’ll have my usual Charles. (he leaves to go get it for her.) So Augustus, your show must be something if you’ve captured the attention of these two. They’ve done nothing but talk talk talk about it ever since you came into town.

Page 15: A Peep Behind the Scenestheacademyofarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A...A Peep Behind the Scenes Audition Information We are so glad to welcome you as we prepare for A Peep Behind

5

INVESTOR 2: Of course we haven’t seen much theatre but your leading lady is remarkable! FRANCIS: Leading lady? AUGUSTUS: Norah. FRANCIS: (with a feigned smile) Ahhh! Now I am sorry I missed it. I would have loved to see her again. Tell me - is her health any better these days? AUGUSTUS: She’s as strong as ever. FRANCIS: Glad to hear it. Because I believe these two have a proposition for you. Shall you tell him Charles or shall I? SONG: ART OF THE DEAL AUGUSTUS: So what would this look like? INVESTOR 1: It’s all right here. We take care of the finances and you do what you do best - the show! AUGUSTUS: Three shows a day?! INVESTOR 2: Well, we would need to make sure we got our money’s worth. I’m sure a business man such as yourself can understand that. AUGUSTUS: Of course. FRANCIS: If you don’t think you and your troupe are up for the challenge - AUGUSTUS: My show is the strongest it’s ever been. (He stops a moment and stares as the paper.) AUGUSTUS: Gentlemen - you have yourself a deal! (they shake hands and song continues.) SONG: ART OF THE DEAL (cont. to the end) AUDITION SCENE 5 Rosalie: Female, 8-14 Reverend: Adult Male Norah: Adult Female ROSALIE: Hello sir. May I help you? REV: I was hoping I might help you my dear. I’ve come to inquire about your mother.

Page 16: A Peep Behind the Scenestheacademyofarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A...A Peep Behind the Scenes Audition Information We are so glad to welcome you as we prepare for A Peep Behind

6

ROSALIE: She is resting just now. NORAH: Shut the door, Rosalie; it's so cold; won’t you ask whoever it is to come in. (The old man stepped inside the caravan, while Rosalie closed the door and quickly moved to sit by her mother’s side.) REV: You must excuse my intruding, ma'am,' but I noticed you were in a bad way today and I thought I might inquire after you to see if you were in need of anything. NORAH: Thank you for your kindness sir. But I have all I need. ROSALIE: Mother. REV: I understand ma’m — I am so fond of little ones you know, so if it’s alright with you, I've brought a little something for your daughter. NORAH: How kind. ROSALIE: Oh look Mummy! It is a picture! NORAH: A picture. ROSALIE: Yes. Look - Its of a shepherd. What a kind face he has. Don’t you think it’s kind Mummy? NORAH: Yes dear. ROSALIE: And look, He is bearing home a little lost lamb. The little lamb looks ever so torn and battered though. REV: Shall I read to you the verse? NORAH: She can read sir - I taught her myself. REV: Oh - forgive me - NORAH: I - I have not always been as you see me now sir. REV: Or course. ROSALIE: Shall I read it Mummy? NORAH: If you’d like, dearest. ROSALIE: (Rosalie begins to Sing.) Rejoice with Me, for I have found My sheep which was lost. There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. ROSALIE: It’s beautiful - it’s it Mummy? NORAH: Yes. I have heard those words many times before.

Page 17: A Peep Behind the Scenestheacademyofarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/A...A Peep Behind the Scenes Audition Information We are so glad to welcome you as we prepare for A Peep Behind

7

REV: But has the Good Shepherd ever said those words of you? NORAH: To me? REV: Yes. Has He ever called the bright angels together and said to them of you, "Rejoice with Me, for I have found My sheep which was lost"? NORAH: I don’t know that He has ever thought of me at all. I spoke to Him - once you see. But He did not speak back. REV: Did He not? NORAH: No. But perhaps He’ll speak to my Rosalie. (she kisses her daughter on the head.) She is so much better than I you see. — (she begins to cry) Can you show yourself out sir - I’m sorry I have to lie down again. REV: Of course. (he moves to the door and then stops) Goodbye. I shall maybe never see you again; but know this, the Good Shepherd is seeking you. He wants to find you, and take you up in His arms, and carry you home; and He won't mind the wounds it has cost Him, if you'll only let Him. ROSALIE: Thank you, sir. Goodbye. REV: Goodbye - I will be praying for you both. (the older man leaves the caravan and Rosalie turns to her mother who is coughing badly again.) ROSALIE: Oh Mummy - you poor poor thing! Here try and take some water. NORAH: Thank you dear. I’ll be fine - I just need some rest. (Rosalie picks up the picture and looks at it again, and then begins to climb on one of the boxes, to reach up high on the wall and pin the picture where her mother can see it.) ROSALIE: There now you can look at it whenever you would like. It's such a very pretty picture, isn't it, mummy? (she notices that her mother is not answering but does not see her crying.) There now - just rest. It will all be alright.
