Dear Parishioners and Friends, In the words of St. Peter, "Lord, it is good for us to be here!" It is good to return to you, and I am most grateful for the many words of prayer that you shared with me during my retreat time. It was a very good experience, mostly in solitude, of rediscovering the wonderful relationship with the Lord Jesus that each of us is called to have. My prayer life has definitely been positively recharged. I re-learned the wonderful grace of saying Mass, even by myself, and truly saw it as the highlight of the day. I bring that renewed
sense of the power of the Lord Jesus back with me to you in the parish as we resume "the work of ministry".
I came across a wonderful passage early in the retreat on one of the saints' feast days
that I feel very strongly moved to share with you. It is from the writings of St. Cyprian, the third century bishop of Carthage, and martyr for the faith. In a teaching letter on the Lord's Prayer, St. Cyprian wrote the following:
"All Christ did, all he taught, was the will of God. Humility in our daily lives, an
unwavering faith, a moral sense of modesty in conversation, justice in acts, mercy in deed, discipline, refusal to harm others, a readiness to suffer harm, peaceableness with our brothers, a wholehearted love of the Lord, loving in Him what is of the Father, fearing Him because he is God, preferring nothing to Him who preferred nothing to us, clinging tenaciously to His love, standing by His cross with loyalty and courage whenever there is any conflict involving His honor and His name, manifesting in our speech the constancy of our profession and under torture confidence for the fight, and in dying the endurance for which we will be crowned--this is what it means to wish to be a coheir with Christ, to keep God's command; this is what it means to do the will of the Father."
That reading really struck me on the retreat, though I had seen it in the Office of
Readings many times before. For whatever reason, the Lord made that particular reading stand out as a daily reflection and invitation to live up to those words! I know I've not lived those words perfectly, sometimes far from them, but those words really moved me during this retreat time to take them as a daily anthem in my priestly life, with a renewed sense of daily reflection on those ideals St. Cyprian mentions.
It is good to come back to the parish. I know we are aflutter again with worries of the
coronavirus, and likely changes in attendance limitations for us. I do still trust in divine providence to protect us during this difficult time. I surely want to publicly honor Father David, Deacon Peter, our deacons and our staff for doing such a fine job while I was away. They kept me informed on important matters, but also kept me informed of the many prayer intentions we have in the parish. It was a pleasure to say Masses for individual intentions while I was on retreat. It was a wonderful way to focus on Christ feeding YOU--- but also on Him feeding ME, in the offering of those Masses. I look forward to keeping that prayerful connections as I return to saying Masses in our parish for you! I suspect this week will be busy in opening mail and catching up, but I'm even ready for that challenge! Thank you again for your prayers during the last month...I felt their power at work for me!
I also want to thank Jordan Haddad for writing four outstanding articles the last four
weeks in my absence. We are decidedly in a battle for the soul of our country right now. And the Church hasn't been as effective in driving the culture, as the decadent culture has been pushing the Church in the last 50 years. But it's time for us to resume that battle. It's a battle we families, praying people and people of good holy will can win--because God is on the side of that! Christ tells us so often to "be not afraid", so take heart from those words, listen to the Lord's call to deeper holiness and joy with Him as the center of our lives, and be about your good works in your lives!
God bless you all!

A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID The Creator and King of the universe is in the chapel, day and night, 24/7, waiting for us. What could we possibly be doing during a pandemic that keeps us from visiting Him? Take a moment right now to set a date and time for this week; put it on your calendar and treat it like an appointment with a friend— because that’s what it is!
"Go and find Him when your patience and strength run out, and you feel alone and helpless. Jesus is waiting for you in the chapel. Say to Him, 'Jesus, you know exactly what is going on. You are all I have, and you know all things. Come to my help.' And then go, and don’t worry about how you are going to manage. That you have told God about it is enough. He has a good memory."
