A solo multi­media exhibit that explores and celebrates the distinct everyday fashion ofKetchikan through illustrations accompanied by life­size pieces.

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 7, 5:00 pm ­7:00 pm at Main Street Gallery  ARTIST PRESENTATION: Saturday, April 8, 12:00 pm at Main Street Gallery Rachael will discuss her inspiration, process and demonstrate ways to use Copicmarkers, used widely in Manga and Japanese animation. This is a great presentation foryouth interested in drawing, illustration, and animation!  Main Street Gallery exhibits and artist presentations are always free and open to thepublic!

Tidelines Journey is a touring program created by the Island Insitute of Sitka, whichbrings a group of artists through Alaskan communities by ferry. We are excited to be partof their Ketchikan stop.  The program is designed to use the work of the traveling artists to create space forimaginative conversations around themes rooted in place and community. The theme of this years tour is Signal To Noise. Signal To Noise is an audio term – itrefers to the strength of a desired audio signal measured against the strength of thebackground noise causing interference with it.

Join us at The Main Street Gallery for a presentation of each artist's work, as well asstories and observations from local artists. 

About the theme:

Tidelines Journey asks us to think about "Signal To Noise" as a guiding metaphor,prompting us to ask: What is the signal, and what is the noise? What is overpowering,and what is drowned out? What is important, what is distracting, and what is therelationship between the two? The theme was inspired by a few conversations in lastyear’s Island Institute events about what is heard and what goes unheard. They heardbirders talking about the degree to which airplane and car noise make it more difficult to

hear bird song, even in small­town Alaska, whale biologists describing the worries thatboat engine noise interferes with the foraging calls of whales, and teenagers talkingabout the social din of a life of technological connection. The theme asks us to consideroppression and inequity, and also prompts the question of how to navigate theoverwhelming daily noise of media and politics in times of political division.

The tour will arrive in Ketchikan on April 9th, with plenty of exciting stuff planned April 9th ­ Meet at KAAHC at 2:00 pm for a meet and greet hike. April 10th ­ 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Main Street gallery for artists presentations April 11th ­ School outreach

Tidelines Journey will continue on to Juneau, Gustavus, Hoonah, and Sitka. 

The Arts Council will nowhave glasses to help thosewith color blindness!Thanks to an incredibly generous donationby Matt Hamilton, The Arts Council now hasa pair of EnChroma glasses at the MainStreet Gallery for loan to anyone with colorblindness.

EnChroma glasses are the only specialty eyewear that alleviates red­green colorblindness, enhancing colors without the compromise of color accuracy.

Use of the glasses is free for anyone to view artwork at the Main Street Gallery.

These glasses are very expensive and do not work for everyone, this is a greatoppotunity for people to try before they buy. Glasses can also be checked out for specialevents (wedding, etc) with a $300 refundable deposit.

Music on the DocksDEADLINE April 24, 2017 5:00 pm 

The City of Ketchikan will befeaturing local musicians on thedock this summer while cruise shippassengers disembark to enjoy our town.

WHO CAN PERFORM: All local musicians in the Ketchikan area are invited to take advantage of thisopportunity!!!! There is an application and audition process for performers.

HOW TO APPLY: The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council has been asked by the City to helpcoordinate this project. There will be an audition process, with a selection panel made upof musicians from Ketchikan. Based on applications and recordings or auditions, thepanel will select performers that will represent Ketchikan in the best light.

“A salon is a gathering of  creative people, held to amuse one another and increase theknowledge of the participants through conversation”

We did not have a large turnout for this month's Salon, but we have had artists that werevery interested in the theme, so we have decided to offer the same theme for April.  Peer Review and Critique Join us and discuss the importance of peer critique. We will discuss how to critiqueeffectively, honestly and respectfully. And how critique can help you improve your ownwork. Artist and Educator Steven Villano will lead us in a critique of a few works by artistswho are willing.  Anyone interested in bringing in a piece finished or developing is invited! 

The Salon is still a growing program, we would like it to be a resource for creators of allmedia. If there is a presentation that you would like to see or programs that you havequestions about, chances are your fellow artists have the same questions. Feel free tocontact Cameo or Marni Cameom@ketchikanarts.org or Marnir@ketchikanarts  

Salons are a perfect venue to encourage professional development for practicing artists,act as a platform for growth in new artists, and an opportunity a create a little funtogether. We want to hear from you!!

We created a Facebook Group to keep conversations going and offer up ideas andinspiration!

 

Member of the Month: KAAHC Board of Directors!! 

At the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council’s Annual Meeting on March 15th theOfficers of the Board of Directors performed their annual switch­a­roo, at which time theOfficers’ duties can shift to other members. This year Victoria Lord stepped down aspresident and Sonya Skan became the new KAAHC President. Marty West moved intothe Vice President position and will to become President when Sonya’s term ends. AnnaShaffer, who had been President of KAAHC for several years, held the position ofImmediate Past President last year, and is now a civilian Board Member...as it were.Nancy Tietje continues as our Treasurer, and Peter Jacobs as our Secretary. SpringBarry, A. Fred Miller, Anne Margaret Shuham, and Kathleen Wiechelman fill out theremaining civilian Board members.

Being on the board of an organization is not an easy task. It takes considerable time,thought and energy to fully understand the depths of a nonprofit organization, and evenmore time to get into the flow of the operations and envision how to help lead theorganization into the future. The Arts Council has been fortunate to have exceptionalBoard members who dedicate their time and energy to lead the organization in creatingand promoting arts opportunities for this community. This past year the Board worked onseveral exciting projects including, our fresh, new "Raffle for the Arts", the French Wineand Cheese fundraiser, a piano performance by Adryn Miller, a brief residency by MavisMuller and passing the KAACH Diversity and Inclusion Resolution. PLUS all of the regularthings that go on at the Arts Council!

I would like to thank the Board of the Arts Council for all of your work. Without yourleadership, the arts would not be as strong as they are in our community. We, asstaff, are proud to work with you and to learn from you! Thank you!!!

Featured Artist of the Month:Danelle LandisDanelle is currently working on a painting of awolf for the upcoming June invitational at theMain Street Gallery. She also has a painting of ashark in the planning stages, possibly for afuture collection of paintings of sea animals. Inthe past year, most of her paintings have beencommissions, with themes including dogs, an album cover, a family's cabin, a republicanelephant and a wedding. However, her favorite subjects to paint are animals!

Fun Art Fact  Supporting the Arts! 

When 1=7 Research shows that even a low level of public funding can stimulate private giving. Each$1 in NEA grant funds leveages another $7 from other public and private sources. NEA’sfunding must be matched by money from other sources. So, when a nonprofit receivesan NEA award, it provides the credibility for other funders to step up. In FY 2016, thisadditional investment resulted in $500 million in matching support!
