A note on positive Lyapunov exponent and sensitive dependence on initial conditions B unyamin Dem_ õr * ,S ß ahin Koc ßak Mathematics Department, Anadolu University, 26470 Eskisehir, Turkey Accepted 3 July 2000 Abstract In this note, we give two examples of discrete dynamics functions) on intervals R, the ®rst having a positive Lyapunov exponent at a point but not being sensitive-dependent on initial conditions at that point; and the second being sensitive-dependent on initial conditions at a point but having a negative Lyapunov exponent at that point. Ó 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. In the literature there seems to be a persistent confusion about the conditions a dynamics has to satisfy to be called chaotic. Mathematicians insist upon sensitive dependence on initial conditions and the physics community prefers the positivity of the highest Lyapunov exponent. Unfortunately, in many, especially applied works on chaos, both conditions are implicitly assumed to be synonymous. This state of the aairs seems all the more curious, as examples of functions are known which are sensitive-dependent on initial conditions at a point but which have vanishing Lyapunov exponent there. For an explicit example on cylinder, see [5, p. 618]. Easy examples can also be given on an interval: It is enough to consider an unstable non-hyperbolic ®xed point i.e. with derivative 1). So it is obvious that sensitive dependence on initial conditions does not imply positive Lyapunov exponent. We will give below a sharper example Example 2), which shows that the Lyapunov exponent can even be strictly negative at a sensitive point. In the other direction, it is always taken for granted, or at least tacitly assumed, that positive Lyapunov exponent implies sensitive dependence. The only place we could ®nd a discussion of this matter in literature is Ref. [4, p. 59], where the author says that this implication is very plausible but he admits at the same time that he knows of no formal proof of it. But we show below Example 1) that it is de®nitely false. We ®rst recall the de®nitions of the two notions and restrict ourselves for simplicity to intervals of R as state spaces [1±3]. Let I R be an interval, f : I ! I a function and x 0 2 I . De®nition 1. f is said to exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions at x 0 if there exists > 0 such that for every d > 0 there exists x with jx x 0 j < d and a positive integer n for which jf n x f n x 0 j > : De®nition 2. Assume f is dierentiable at the points x 0 ; x 1 f x 0 ; x 2 f x 1 f 2 x 0 ; ... ; x n f x n1 f n x 0 ; ... www.elsevier.nl/locate/chaos Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 12 2001) 2119±2121 * Corresponding author.
