Lambda Delta | University of Houston February 2015 What’s Inside 2014 | Frontier Fiesta | Events | Updates A Note from the VPAR I want to begin this very first newsletter of the Lambda Delta Chapter of Sigma Kappa by giving you a brief introduction of myself. My name is Bika Shetty. I am a junior here at the University of Houston pursuing a Bachelors of Business Administration in Finance and a Minor in Law. I have been a member of several organizations during my time in college but no experience has meant as much to me as joining Sigma Kappa. In my short time as a member, I have already grown and received so much from this organization and am eager to give back. This semester we are looking forward to expanding our chapter to welcome new members, cultivating a strong presence and good reputation in the community, emphasizing high standards for scholarship and creating friendships that will last a lifetime. All of this can be made possible due to the tremendous support and excitement of our alumnae and leadership team. Thank you! A Note from the VPAR I want to begin this very first newsletter of the Lambda Delta Chapter of Sigma Kappa by giving you a brief introduction of myself.

Thank you!

A Recap of 2014 We had a successful first semester as a colony learning about the rituals and history of our sorority, participating in philanthropy, getting involved on campus, and forming the bonds of sisterhood which we have already come to cherish. On the morning of November 1st, we attended the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk was about 3 miles in Downtown Houston and our colony class fundraised over $3,000 for the cause in a matter of a couple weeks. In addition to the walk, women tabled around campus to spread awareness and also made a few visits to a local Alzheimer’s nursing home. Shortly after, we celebrated our first Founder’s Day with the alumnae chapter who brought us delicious treats and beautiful memories.

The highlight of our semester was, of course, Initiation on December 6th. We were so incredibly honored to have in attendance our National President, Cheri de Jong, as well as so many of our Houston Area alumnae. The new executive council was sworn in and the following morning was our Installation Brunch to celebrate the official commencement of the first Sigma Kappa chapter at the University of Houston.

Frontier Fiesta Frontier Fiesta is the University of Houston's oldest and proudest tradition. Established in 1939, it began as a festival to promote the University of Houston when the University first moved from downtown Houston to its present location. This year, Sigma Kappa has partnered with Sigma Nu to participate in Frontier Fiesta by creating, producing, and performing in a variety show based on the Hunger Games. Frontier Fiesta also hosts well known artists, games, and performances of all kinds with a focus to bring campus as well as the greater Houston community together. Every year, the Frontier Fiesta Association gives scholarships to deserving incoming freshman and current UH students. These scholarships not only reward academic achievement, but also recognize outstanding efforts in community service. We have two women in our chapter employed by Frontier Fiesta; Arielle Ward-Holcombe, our Executive Vice President, works on the Fiesta’s Community Outreach Team and Stephanie Bailey works as Fiesta’s Director of Marketing. The Mr. and Ms. Fiesta competition is a fundraiser benefiting the scholarships awarded by the Frontier Fiesta Association. Each year Frontier Fiesta awards scholarships to incoming freshman based not only on academic and community achievements, but also recognizes outstanding efforts in leadership. Mr. and Ms. Fiesta help Frontier Fiesta by raising money from the community, and then the male and female candidates who raise the most money will be crowned with the title of Mr. and Ms. Fiesta. Our Mr. and Ms. Fiesta cut the ribbon opening Fiesta City to the UH Community and serve as honorary judges for the Cook-Off competition. One of our members, Alyssa Cervantes will be competing for the position of Ms. Fiesta.
