Ladies Association of Walden March 2013 A note from the Prez... Our February meeting was so very good! The food was great and the speaker even better! The only bad thing about the speaker was the amount of time available for him to talk. We could have let him speak to us for hours! Our next meeting is the Follies. I hope you have your tickets! If not, you can still check to see if any are avail- able. Remember it is Friday, March 8 th not the 1 st . I am sure it will be a very good show with a very nice lunch. On Thursday, May 9 th , plan to spend the day shop- ping and dining! The Ladies Association is going to the Cypress Outlet Mall followed by a lunch stop at Alicia’s Mexican Grille. The outlet mall has 145 shops! That should keep us busy for quite a while. The mall also has a small food court for drinks and snacks. We will shop from 10:00 to about 12:45 and then head to the restaurant. The restaurant has a lunch menu this is priced from $6.95 to $9.95. I have chartered a bus to leave the Yacht Club at 9:00 a.m. and return about 3:00 p.m. A number of ladies requested this trip, so get signed up! We will have just one bus with a maximum of 55 people. A few people have asked why a Thurs- day instead of a Friday. On Friday, the traf- fic coming home would be much heavier, the outlet mall more crowded and the Fri- day lunch crowd is much busier! So to avoid that, I chose a Thursday. The cost is $5.00 and includes transportation and snacks both ways. Send me an email at: [email protected] . I will reply that I received your email. At the March meeting, I will have a table set up to take your $5. So get your reservation in to me. Right now, we are only taking Ladies Asso- ciation members. You can waitlist your friends and I will let you know a few days prior if there is room. See you at the Follies, March 8 th ! Linda Sustman I hope that all of you have made your reservations for the Follies. No need to tell you that this is always a fun program and that Rick will provide a delicious meal! Remember…there is no LAW meeting OR program the first Friday of March! Mark your calendars for April 5. Our program will be entertainment delivered by “Classic Jazz with Pat Austin.” This is a di- verse group, mostly from the Memorial area of Houston, and it includes a pharmacist, piano and voice teachers, directors of vari- ous choirs, and homemakers. They are all involved with other choirs in the city includ- ing the Symphony Choral, The Tuesday Mu- sic Chorus and The Bach Chorale. Several belong to other ensembles and all are in- volved with their church choirs. You won’t want to miss this! Janie Smith VP-Programs

TO THE WALDEN LADIES ASSOCIATION

Thank you so much for the outpouring of loveand concern the ladies of this club poured out on myfamily during the loss of my precious husband, JimReagan, this past week. Your generosity was unbe-lievable and I don’t have the words to express myheartfelt feelings. The food, flowers, cards, phonecalls and visits were so appreciated. Thank youagain for making an unbearable time bearable.

SOCIAL BITES ate family style thispast month at Buca dePeepa Restraurant. The hard-est thing about the outing was deciding what dishesto eat. The final decision was to begin with the newBuca salad with garlic cheese bread followed by thechicken manicotti entre. The large plated salad wasnot only beautiful to see but delightful to taste. Thekitchen mistakenly sent out a “small” order of mani-cotti in place of the “large”. The mistake was imme-diately rectified with a second “small” order. Actually, the small order could have been enough, but whocould turn down a second heaping. Including gratu-ity, the group split the ticket at $15.00 each. It was adecided bargain for the excellent quality of food andservice, not to mention the good company. --SandyBarron

ALMOST HOMEMADE will meet on March21st at the home of Peggy Myers. She will bemaking an old family favorite--Beef Stew -something she would not have made if she hadto transport it to another home. Being hostessand doing the main dish seems to be liked by alland we're being treated to different dishes.

--Barbara Wright

TASTE BUDS --Karen Truman will be entertain-ing the Taste Buds with Portugal on the patio FridayMarch 15th. The group had a wonderful lunch atSharon Richardson's with a spa pampering get to-gether in January and a sweetheart salad lunch at JoKeller's where the table was festive in February.

WWW.COOKS.COM used Top Texas chefs’recipes for our January Luncheon. Laura DayMcGuire and Rick Adams were two of the local chefswhose recipes were used by the group. Both aregraduates of the prestigious Culinary Institution ofAmerica in Hyde Parke, New York. Laura worked atLa Strata and The Houston Country Club before be-coming chef at The Café at Brookwood. Liz Schultzprepared Chef Laura’s Niko Taboulet. The grouploved the dish and appreciated the time Liz spentslicing and dicing.

Clever Betty Ruffer chose Chef Rick Adam’s rec-ipe for Creamed Spinach. One could not like spinachbut still love this dish. It was delicious. Rick startedcooking when he was 13 years old. After graduatingfrom the Culinary Institute, Rick worked for TheStrawberry Patch and then worked for the Pappas.Rick became The Corporate Concept Chef andopened over 35 of the Pappa family’s restaurants.Walden is indeed fortunate that Rick decided to be-come the chef at The Walden Yacht Club. Going tothe Yacht Club is a treat, thanks to Rick and his won-derful staff. --Linda McDonald
