2 April 2014 - Workshop Theatre Society Newsletter

Directed by Cynthia Salter-Audy, “Always, Patsy Cline” is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger.

Having first heard Cline on the “Arthur Godfrey Show” in 1957, Seger became an immediate and avid fan of Cline’s and she constantly hounded

the local disc jockey to play Cline’s records on the radio.

In 1961 when Cline went to Houston for a show, Seger and her buddies arrived about an hour-and-a-half early and, by coincidence, met Cline who was traveling alone. The two women struck up a friendship that was to culminate in Cline

spending the night at Seger’s house - a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963.

The relationship, which began as fan worship evolved into one of mutual respect. It is the kind of relationship that many fans would like to have with their heroes.

Review of “...And Then The Lights Went Out”February 14 - 22, 2014 @ The Pumphouse Theatres

A play by Andy Garland

Directed by Shelby Reinitz

Produced by Alan LeBoeuf

In a cold February, we had another sell out (well

almost) in the Joyce Doolittle Theatre. As a welcome

bonus, the writer, Andy Garland, an Albertan, was

present at the final performance. The story was an

interesting concept; a writer struggling to finish his

novel and his fictional characters keep dropping in

on him, offering advice and drinking his liquor. His

publisher is breathing down his neck and the land

lady is clamouring for the rent. He must finish the

novel before the lights go out.

Excellent entertainment and some first class

performances from the cast. This is not the last that

we will hear from this play or this writer.

4 Workshop Theatre Society Newsletter - April 2014

For this newsletter we are going way back to we believe the 1980′s and possibly the early 1990′s.  We have volunteers that are sorting through all of their theatre archives for photos, play posters and programs.  For an organization that has been around for almost 50 years, you can imagine the amount of information that is floating around out in the community.  We appreciate your help!

We discovered this photo of a Workshop Theatre production.  The back of the photo says: “Workshop Theatre – Who Says Murder”.  Workshop Theatre has produced many ‘who-dunits’ and murder mysteries over the years.

We were very pleased to find this gem however we are unsure of the date we produced this play.  One of our volunteers thinks it may be from the 1980′s and possibly the 1990′s.  The back of the photo says: “Left to right – Claudette Williams as ‘Madge Rogers’, Shirley Canfield as ‘Doris Fuller’ and John Heywood as ‘Frank Fuller’.

According to Samuel French, the play is about a couple (Doris and Frank) who return home one night to find their lounge in a state of chaos, but their dismay turns to bewilderment when they discover nothing seems to have been stolen. They’re joined by daughter Madge and her husband Trevor and then they find a girl’s naked body hidden under the window-seat.

Movies will make you famous, television will make you rich but theatre will make you good. - Terrance Mann

It’s all about serial killers, another evening at Fawlty Towers, a miscarriage of justice and a twist on Shakespeare!

Jack the Ripper Monster of WhitechapelBy Joe Dickinson - September 2014 - Victor Mitchell TheatreA comical but scary treatment of the serial killer who terrorized London in the 1880′s. Many of the characters and events are taken right from history, but others are pure comic invention.

Steven, The Steven Truscott StoryFebruary 2015 - Joyce Doolittle TheatreIn the summer of 1959, a sleepy town in rural Ontario was rocked by a tragedy that changed the community forever and sent shockwaves around the world. A 12-year-old girl named Lynne Harper was found raped and strangled to death. Days later, 14-year-old Steven Truscott was charged with her murder. After a two week trial by jury, the boy was found guilty and sentenced to hang, making him the youngest person to sit on Canada’s death row.

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)By Anne-Marie Macdonald - May 2015 - Victor Mitchell TheatreWhat if Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies were actually comedies? After a professor steals her thesis, Constance Ledbelly is transported into the Bard’s world of Othello and Romeo & Juliet, where she inadvertently sends his stories in new directions. Quiz Night!

On Saturday evening March 29th a small crowd gathered at “The Space” for Quiz Night. This is an occasion when our brain cells and our recall are seriously tested. The five teams were randomly selected in an effort to avoid a team of Jeopardy winners forming a team and roundly beating and embarrassing us all.

To keep in the spirit of things we celebrated Earth Hour. Lighting was by candle light, which lent an air of mystery (if not danger). At the end of a thoroughly enjoyable evening, table No. 2 were the winners of a close contest.

Table No. 2 was made up of the following players:

• Bob Cooper• Christine Probert• Sarah Baugh• Megan McCredy• Paul Brown

The prizes for the great effort were gift certificates from Tim Hortons.

Special thanks to our quizmaster,(who also set the questions) John Hickie and his able assistant, Alan LeBoeuf
