On Tuesday the 2 October we celebrated Angel Mass. It was a very special Mass as we watched our Matric girls walk in with our Grade Ones. This was our Matrics’ last mass with us before they write their final exams. We wish each of them all the best for their exams and pray that God will protect them and guide them as they leave St Dominic’s at the end of the year.

To all our parents, learners and staff I leave you with the following reflection which was read during the Angel Mass.

Angel’s MassA beautiful Angel’s Mass celebrating the feast of the Archangels, Michael, Raphael and Ga-briel, was held in the Jubilee on Tuesday 2 October. It was the final mass that the matrics were present at for this year. They processed in as traditionally done, with the Grade Ones and sat together for the duration of the service. Fr Kieran was our celebrant and the readings, singing, altar serving and all other duties were performed with beauty and reverence. It was a fitting celebration!

First ConfessionThe First Holy Communion girls will be making their First Confession (Sacrament of Reconcil-iation) on the morning of Tuesday 16 October in our school chapel. We as a school community hold them in our prayers and wish them well on this next step of their spiritual journey.

Morning PrayerLord, as I go about my day, please give me the wisdom to make all the right choices .

The strength to overcome obstacles. The compassion needed to help others who are less fortunate than me.

The courage I will need to turn away from any temptations the enemy puts in front of me.

And most of all , please continue to shine Your light on my path, guide my footsteps and watch over my life .

I thank you for all you have blessed me with and always listening to my prayers.“Your word is a lamp for my feet , a light for my path”

(Psalm 119:105)In Jesus’ name, Amen

CondolencesWe express our sincere condolences to Mrs Sebastiao whose mother passed away last week

we pray that God will comfort her and her family.

Drummie News | Majorette World Federation ChampionshipsThe third MWF (Majorette World Federation) championship was held at the Grand West in Cape Town in September. It is the first time that this bi-annual competition was not held in Europe.

Having the competition in Cape Town meant that hundreds of spectators could enjoy and experience what the rest of the world is doing within the sport of Majorettes.

“The MWF leadership invests a lot of effort to make Majorette-sport truly a world sport, and with the work of our national associations,

my faith in the future of Majorette-sport is unquestionable, and we can all attest to this.”

Netball

One School, One Family, One Spirit

The day finally arrived, our netball and hockey Grade 6 & 7 girls raring to go. Our sister school, Our Lady of Fatima, in KZN was hosting their annual Catholic Schools’ Festival. The girls eagerly jumped into the new luxury St. Dominic’s bus and said there goodbyes. 4 days without cell phones – a perfect opportunity to get to know their teammates and build team morale. The tour was an awesome success. As usual the accommodation was fantastic, and our girls were excellently behaved, making St. Dominic’s proud once again. The girls were thoroughly spoilt with a sports dinner at the school, receiving gorgeous gifts and goodies. A late night, followed by an early morning trip to the beach, fun in the sea and down time. Then reality hit and off to netball. The girls played phenomenally, losing the first game 15-16 to our host school, winning 15-4 vs St. Teresa’s Rosebank and drawing 9-9 vs Maris Stella. Our team showed true sportsmanship and despite injuries, never gave up. The following day started even earlier, the hockey girls time to shine and so they did. It was a tough day, the sun was relentless; but the girls persisted and played great hockey. Unfortunately, losing all 3 matches, but showing unbelievable improvement in skill, fitness and tenacity. Substitutions only taking place in order for girls to cool off in ice buckets, drink water and get back out there. I have never been so proud to be a St. Dominic’s teacher, coach, old girl. After hockey, we enjoyed lunch at Moses Mabhida Stadium, walked along the promenade and went back to the hotel to enjoy a night of games; it was here that everyone truly bonded; laughing hysterically and relaxing together. On behalf of Miss Venter, Coach Jen and myself, thank you to the parents for their support but more importantly to the 20 young sportswomen who were a tribute to our school.Mrs Bradbury

Grade 7 FarewellOn Wednesday the 3rd October the school hall was transformed for the Grade 7 Farewell Dinner. Parents, teachers and invited guests joined the Grade 7 class of 2018 in a celebra-tion of excellence.Memories of events of special times were shared, certificates of recognition for service were awarded, a delicious dinner was served, an emotional song was sung and entertainment was provided by some of our talented young ladies. The Grade Sevens are sure to remember the inspiring words of encouragement given by Nompilo Mpanza, the newly appointed Head Girl of the High School.Mrs van Dyk chose the theme “shoes” for her ad-dress which gave very interesting guidelines on adapting to different situations in life. As they en-ter a new phase in their school career we encourage these young ladies to “Put your best foot forward”.Many thanks to all who contributed to making this a memorable occasion. Special mention must go to Mrs van Dyk and our Grade 7 teachers, Mrs Bradbury, Ms de la Hunt and Mrs Bekker for their care and guid-ance throughout the year

Tour da Maths

On the evening of the 10th, the Grade 6 and 7 girls enjoyed their very first Tour da Maths held at St. John’s. All the girls did excep-tionally well. Ruby Carlson and her group came second. We are very proud of all our girls and we cannot wait for the next one. Thank you to Mrs. Gray and the parents for all your support. Mrs. Bekker

Thank youDoing the right thing ………. is about transforming waste into helping others

Bread tags and Bottle TopsOur Primary School has made a difference to the environment whilst doing good for others. The girls collected enough bread tags (a minimum of 50Kg), and in exchange received a wheelchair donated by a local recycling company.Congratulations to Grade 7 students Natascha Hammerton, Haily Wilson and Tiara Drake who headed up this initiative. The wheel-chair will be donated to the St Anthony’s Day Care Centre for the Aged where it will make the life of an elderly person that much easier. Please continue collect and bring to school plastic bread tags and

bottle tops. A bit thank you to the families who have participated in this initiative. We have nearly reached our goal of a second wheelchair for the needy.

SOCIAL MEDIAA recent article in the Boksburg Advertiser highlighted Cyberbullying. As with anything in life, children need guidance from their parents. Discuss and set family rules for cell phone use with your children e.g.• Treat others with respect• Show your parents if you receive a nasty message• Don’t retaliate but respond only if you can do so calmly• Block the bully• Remember the 3 Ps –If you wouldn’t like your Parents,Principal or Priest/Minister to see a message you wrote…Don’tsend it!
