An eating disorder in which a person diets and becomes significantly underweight, yet still feeling fat, continues to starve.

- Loss of appetite and inability to eat.

- An emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat.

A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected; or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).

PREVALENCE

Anorexia is more common in women than men, but men struggle with it also.

1 in 200 American women suffers from it. 80% of 13yr olds try to lose weight.

Anorexia is not a common disorder. It affects only 5 to 10 people out of every 100,000 people.

However, it may be a growing problem. Agras WS (2001).

The outcome of this disorder is that it may be different depending on the person

• some die (6%)

• some commit suicide

• with the right treatment half of the affected have full recovery

• some gain a lot of weight.

PROGNOSIS• About 45% of these people have an

incredible• Another 30% experience considerable

improvement• About 20% of those receiving

treatment remain seriously impaired• Between 2% and 10% die because of

the disorder. Deaths are usually related to complications of starvation or suicide. However, death rates appear to be decreasing due to improved treatments.
