please consider serving on the
Board, in any position, for the up-
coming year. In addition, the very
essential role of Historian has yet
to be filled. Your increased in-
volvement in the DGGZ will en-
sure that our chapter continues to
thrive.
2020 will be an eventful year,
starting with our first meeting of
the year (with Les Paul as speaker)
in February, then our April auc-
tion, September Oktoberfest,
Christmas party and more.
To finish off 2019 with holiday
cheer, we will meet on Saturday
December 14th at Harry's Hofbrau
in San Leandro for our Christmas
party. We hope to see many of you
there!
Best wishes to all members for a
Thankful Thanksgiving, a Merry
Christmas and a Healthy, Happy
New Year!
Prosit!
Julie Hughes, President DGGZ
Hallo Fellow Zechers!
As we "fall" from autumn
into winter, we fondly recall
our last meeting held at
Steve and Nancy Morris's
home, where we gathered in
their beautiful and cozy
backyard. Tables were set
up with displays of steins,
wood carvings, a German
dirndl dress and much more
for sale or trade. Ron Fox
displayed his recently ac-
quired additions to his stein
collection, one of which I
just had to purchase, a
Mettlach Munich Child
stein.
Our board and general meet-
ings were short and infor-
mative, giving members
plenty of time to view and
admire Steve's vast collec-
tion of Schierholz steins,
along with his various Sar-
reguemines steins. Nancy
outdid herself with a deli-
cious menu starting with
some appetizing appetizers,
which included her scrumptious
signature Swedish meatballs, then a
variety of tasty dinner dishes, in-
cluding ham and turkey, followed
by delectable desserts. Many thanks
to Steve and Nancy for hosting! A
great time was enjoyed by all!
Bill Floyd did a show and tell pres-
entation displaying his collection of
the most beautiful, unusual and rare
steins, some of which, were not on
display during his house tour. Eve-
ryone expressed a lot of interest and
enthusiasm being able to see and
examine Bill's eclectic collection.
Many thanks to Bill for sharing
these stunning, exquisite steins with
us!
At the board meeting, we approved
a new DGGZ logo, which was dis-
played on the bottom of the SCI
San Francisco beer stein for the
2019 convention.
I am very happy to report that
Rhoda Fry will serve as our new
Newsletter Editor. In the last news-
letter, Rhoda wrote an article on the
Berg Brauerei Brewery stein that
was very well written, informative
and interesting. A special "Thank
You" to Rhoda for stepping up to
the important job of editor and
keeping our newsletter alive! Let's
all help Rhoda by furnishing her
with interesting articles on steins or
related items for future newsletters.
I am also pleased to announce that
Chuck Schoppe will serve on the
Board of Directors in 2020 after
retiring from being our Newsletter
Editor. This brings me to ask all of
you fellow members if you would
A Wood Grouse on the Aurerbräu Logo?By Rhoda Fry

Many German breweries feature animals on their
logos. The Auerbräu has a wood
grouse, known has “auerhahn” in
German. Auer Bräu was founded
in 1887 by Johann Auer in
Rosenheim, which is about 40
miles southeast of Munich.
The city of Rosenheim in 1701
In 1888, Auer purchased Saubräu, which means
“sow brewery” and had a sow for its logo. In 1889
the similarity of the name Auer to auerhahn was
used as the inspiration for the present company logo.
The male wood grouse, shown here on the left, is
about twice the size as the female wood grouse
The wood grouse is the largest member of the grouse
family. This game bird’s feathers can be found on
traditional Bavarian hats. Many hotels, inns, and res-
taurants in Bavaria included the name “Auerhahn,”
and the wood grouse is found on many German
decorative items such as plaques, dishes, and flat-
ware. The wood grouse can no longer be hunted
in Bavaria as it has become endangered.
Following the bombing of its production facility
in World War II, the brewery rebuilt and ex-
panded its capacity. Today, some of the brew-
ery’s beers feature a portrait of Johann Auer
while most continue the tradition of the wood
grouse. Auerbräu is owned
by the Paulaner Group,
which is one of three sub-
sidiaries of BHI (Brau Hold-
ing International AG). BHI,
in turn, is owned by the Ger-
many-based conglomerate
Schörghuber Ventures
(50.1%) and the Netherlands
-based Heineken N.V.
