A New Year’s Prayer

God, thank You for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that You are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.

As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what You want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with You now, one day at a time. Amen.

Mary “kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” During the Octave of Christmas, the church has been contemplating the newborn Jesus, God’s gift of self to us and all of creation.

What have been the fruits of your prayer and meditation in this season? What have you been reflecting on in your heart?

What will you take away from this year’s celebration of Christmas? How will it stay with you throughout the year?

WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH.

My Dear Parish Family, If there is one thing I have learned in my life (and in the past year) is that I have so much more to learn! We are all products of our past, for better or worse. And at the beginning of a new year we have hope for the future. But really, what we can be sure of is that all we have is this moment right now. I am chuckling to myself because as I am writing this it is actually Thursday, December 22, (holiday printer deadlines) and here I am talking about our need to live in the present on January 1, 2017! In any event, let’s get back on topic. I guess it’s fitting that I digress, because that is actually what I am talking about. We have this moment right now and we are called to live it for all we are worth. The famous maxim, carpe diem is what I am talk-ing about. Seizing the day is about living our lives purposefully, being fully present in every situation we find ourselves. This includes our prayer life, too. How many times have I heard peo-ple confess being distracted in prayer? I know exactly what they are saying because I find myself there, too. And what should we do when we are distracted? The first thing I try to do is be aware that the distraction may have been placed on our hearts by our Lord. The second is to just try and quiet ourselves and con-sciously give that time to our relationship with the Lord. So, what will I try to learn this year? I will try to be more present in all the aspects of my life. I will seek to find the joy in the midst of the craziness of life in these times. I could keep on going, but this shouldn’t be about me. So, I ask you all: Standing here in this mo-ment what can you do now, everyday to better your life and rela-tionships with God and neighbor? On this day that we honor Mary as the Mother of Our Lord Jesus and as we pray for Peace through-out the world, let us give thanks for all that has brought us to this day, the One who sustains in the present, and the hope for the need-ed grace to move forward. I offer a special thank you to all of you who sent Christmas cards, gifts and prayers our way this Christmas season. You are a blessing to me and the priests and deacons who serve Saint Joseph’s faithfully. God bless your generosity in the Christmas collection and for the unbelievable response in our call for dona-tions for the beautiful new outdoor Nativity installation! God bless you all now and always. Fr. Scott

END OF MONTH 8: Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program

“I’m Almost Here!” Growth is very rapid this month! Your baby is 16-1/2 to 18 inches long and weighs about 4 to 6 pounds. There is tremendous brain growth and most body organs are now developed, except for the lungs. Movements or “kicks” are strong enough to be visible from the outside.

We pray for Your protection and grace for this little baby who is shortly to take his place in the world and keep him and his parents from all the perils and dangers of this life – looking to Jesus in Whom is life and light and help and wholeness. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AVAILABLE: Saint Joseph’s is now offering Spiritual Direction on a limited basis. In Spiritual Direction, the trained Director helps di-rectees to become more aware of God in their own life experi-ences. The director focuses on God’s presence in each one’s life, prayer and communica-tion. Spiritual Direction ses-sions are not geared to problem solving or counseling, rather, the goal of Spiritual Direction is to gain a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus. Sessions are conducted one-on-one and are completely confidential. Again, it is not therapy. Querida Familia Parroquial,

Fr. Scott
