Sides of the War

U-BoatsU-boats were introduced by the Germans they were the first to use submarines. They called them U-boats because of the word Unterseebooten which means underwater boats. Along with U-boats the German used poison gas.

Machine GunsThe first machine guns were very heavy and hand to be moved and loaded by several men. Due to the use of machine guns trenches were dug as a form of protection.

Airplanes were mainly used to see the enemy’s troop movement and dropping booms on the enemy. Also sometime there were air battles these were call dogfights.

A famous German dogfight pilot was Baron Manfred von Rechthofen we was nicknamed “The Red Baron”. He was said to have shot down 80 enemy aircrafts.

TanksTanks were first introduced by Britain; they were slow, heavily armored vehicles that had guns mounted on them. Tanks were an advantage because they could easily roll over barbed wire and cut into the enemy’s defenses.

Supporting the WarAs well as new weapons there were new types of solders, in previously wars soldiers were professionally trained in World War I soldiers were just common civilians. The men that were not drafted stayed at home and help produce resources for the war along with women. This became know as the term total war. To encourage the people to support their country in the fight governments would use propaganda. So propaganda was true and some false usually used to make the enemy look bad.
