A. N. TERENIN (On His 70th Birthday) Dear Aleksandr Nikolaevich: The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Department of Biochemistry~ Biophysics, and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds, Department of Geneneral and Technical Chemistry, and Editorial Board of the Journal "Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR. Seriya Khimicheskaya" cordially con- gratulate you on your 70th birthday and 40th anniversary of scientific and pedagogical activity. The development of Soviet photochemistry has been inseparably linked with your name. All your work, beginning with stud/es of the photodissociation of vapors of salts and ending with the latest funda- mental investigations of photoprocesses in complex organic molecules, are characterized by profound thought, a high experimental level, and clever theoretical interpretation. The hypothesis of the decisive role of the triplet state in photochemical reactions, which you first advanced in 1943, has now received experimental confirmation in a wide circle of phenomena in luminescence and photochemistry. Your fundamental studies of the primary physical processes of photosynthesis in plants are also well known to everyone. As a result of the use of spectral and other modern methods of investigation, you have considerably advanced the solution of the problems of photosynthesis and other biochemical and biophysical problems. During your scientific and pedagogical activity, you have created a great scientific school. Your works and the works of your students have achieved general renown both in the Soviet Union and abroad. We wish you, dear Aleksandr Nikolaevich, many years of creative scientific activity for the welfare of our Soviet fatherland. Dear Aleksandr Nikolaevich:

The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Department of Biochemistry~ Biophysics, and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds, Department of Geneneral and Technical Chemistry, and Editorial Board of the Journal "Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR.
