WOMEN'S VOICE AND LEADERSHIP Led by women that are feeling the greatest impact of gender discrimination, women's rights organizations have the personal experience and skills to push for necessary change locally, and advocate for the rights of women and girls on a larger scale. Women’s Voice and Leadership is a unique program that supports women’s rights organizations with funding, capacity building and strengthening of their networks to further their ability to deliver quality women's rights programming and services to women in their local communities, and advocate for policy change and enforcement. It will take us at CARE Canada $500,000 to continue supporting women's rights organizations in Kenya and South Sudan through the Women's Voice and Leadership project. Your support will help CARE put the power back in the hands of women who can create long-term, sustainable change in their communities. In Kenya and South Sudan, women and girls are often confined to unequal, subordinate roles in their homes and communities. In South Sudan, women and girls are often seen as assets to obtain a bride price, while boys are seen as heirs to the family wealth, property and family name. In Kenya, society gives men the ability to control women's time, labour and movement. Kenyan women have less access to and control over land, finances, food, education, employment, health care and political participation, while Kenyan men are expected to dominate decision-making from household to national levels. -Yeno Susan, leader of Justice Foundation Organization

It will take us at CARE Canada $500,000 to continue supporting women's rights organizationsin Kenya and South Sudan through the Women's Voice and Leadership project. With your support, the Women's Voice and Leadership project will help to build stronger,more resilient women’s rights organizations in Kenya and South Sudan that will be able tocontinue supporting and empowering women for years to come. This project will support:

Beacon of Hope is a women's rights organization in Kenya that worksto prevent Female Genital Mutilation and support the development ofgirls and young women through mentorship programs. One of theirkey activities is providing a pain-free alternative to Female GenitalMutilation that gives girls a painless and empowering culturalalternative rite of passage into womanhood.

As a grassroots organization, Beacon of Hope has the ability to reach particularly vulnerable and marginalized girls in their community. Your support can help Beacons of Hope and other women's rightsorganizations build the capacity of their organization so they cansupport more vulnerable women and girls.

Through the Women's Voice and Leadership project, women’s rights organizations are trulyin the driver’s seat: they identify their own issues, their own methods of solving these issues,and they define project activities and goals. Your support gives CARE the ability toaccompany, facilitate, catalyze and link women’s rights organizations together to support oneanother and the overall women’s movement. CARE Canada is proud to partner with the Vancouver Council for CARE, anetwork of women and men who support the rights and empowerment ofwomen in vulnerable communities through CARE Canada. The VancouverCouncil for Care have made a 4 year commitment to the Women's Voiceand Leadership project. Their investment will help women's rightsorganizations empower and advocate for the women and girls in theircommunities.

$100 can support the Kirinyaga Women Empowerment Programorganization in Kenya to provide sanitary towels to one girl withcerebral palsy for a year, as a way of giving her dignity andlessening the burden to her caregiver, and help raise awarenesson girls’ disabilities issues.

$250 can train five high school girls on gender equality, childmarriage and violence through Crown the Women South Sudan.When girls are better informed of their options and rights, they arebetter able to advocate for themselves, and access the resourcesavailable to them when they need help.

$400 can support Hope Restoration South Sudan to run onecommunity awareness session on housing, land and propertyrights for women. More equal access to housing, land andproperty gives women the ability to be more independent,and own their home or start a business without relying on ahusband, father or brother.
