Inspired by Amy Johnson’s beloved Gipsy Moth aeroplane, in which she made her epic flight to Australia, a flutter of exotic giant moths has alighted on walls and plinths across Hull, the East Riding and beyond! Saffron Waghorn, East Riding based sculptor and stone mason, created the original sculpture, from which our flutter of Moths has hatched. The 59 Moths, each measuring almost 1.5m across, have been decorated by artists and community groups, making each Moth a unique work of art. The designs are inspired by Amy Johnson’s achievements, her flight to Australia and the era in which she lived. We invite you to discover our joyful, colourful and inspirational Moths. Happy hunting! A Moth for Amy is an Amy Johnson Festival project. Amy was one of the most influential and inspirational women of the twentieth century. She was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia and set a string of other records throughout her career. Our festival celebrates Amy’s life, achievements and legacy with a wide ranging programme that aims to appeal to all interests and ages. The festival will raise awareness of Amy Johnson’s achievements as an aviator, as an engineer and as a woman of her time, one of the first truly international celebrities. Amy’s amazing story of adventure, glamour and tragedy has been an inspiration to artists and organisations who have brought Amy to life with imagination and ingenuity! From kites to comics, Leonardo da Vinci machines to cardboard planes, films to fantasy, the festival re-imagines Amy’s world through the lens of today. But above all, Amy is a fantastic role model for young people in general and young women in particular – a woman of unstoppable determination, engineering and aviation skills. A MOTH FOR AMYMoths are able to use the moon and stars to navigate.
