CRA Exam

From the moment the first golf cart headed out, the firsteducational session was full, and the moment the enter-tainment hit the stage, attendees at AHRA’s 31st Annual

Meeting & Exposition in Anaheim, CA felt the enthusiasm of theevent. Over 1,000 radiology administrators and 197 exhibitorsenjoyed the warm sunshine of Orange County while networkingand learning.

On Saturday, 60 radiology administrators sat for the CertifiedRadiology Administrator (CRA) examination while other atten-dees headed out on Sunday to Tustin Ranch Golf Club for the4th Annual SourceOne Healthcare Technologies / AHRAEducation Foundation Golf Tournament. The Association ofEducators in Radiological Sciences (AERS) delivered a day longworkshop. And, as with all the other days, attendees had a widevariety of breakout sessions to attend throughout the afternoon.

Networking events included the annual President’s Receptionand the theme party, which brought the beach to attendees, complete with lifeguard station, surfboards and beach balls.

The General Sessions provided education and motivation.During the Grand Opening Ceremony, The Surf City All-Stars hadthe attendees dancing and singing along to favorite beachsongs before Joel Zeff took the stage, along with AHRA atten-dees, in improvisational exercises that highlighted team build-ing, communication, positive support, and flexibility. Roderic I.Pettigrew, PhD, MD, and Director of the National Institute ofBiomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, shared with attendeesinformation regarding current research and future directions forthe imaging field. Shep Hyken shared how to build loyal rela-tionships with both internal and external customers. ComedianGreg Schwen wrapped up the closing luncheon with a humorouslook at the business world and the healthcare industry.

During the Annual Meeting, the new Board of Directors andPresident Michael Albertina were installed (see the LeadershipDirectory insert in this issue for complete information).

Thank you to everyone who planned, participated in, andattended AHRA’s 31st Annual Meeting & Exposition and made itsuch a success. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Bostonin 2004!

Ijust returned from the AnnualMeeting & Exposition, and onceagain we experienced another out-

standing and successful conference.Kudos to Richard Lewis, Design TeamLeader (AKA- The King). The long hoursand dedication by the team were evidentas witnessed by the variety of educa-tional opportunities and general ses-sions that were available at this meet-ing.

The kick off on Sunday was the AnnualAHRA Education Foundation GolfTournament chaired by Brad Reed andDanyel Surrency of founding tourna-ment sponsor, SourceOne Healthcare

Technologies. The event was held at Tustin Ranch GolfClub, and was again a success.

This year, Roland Rhynus and Wanda Casady chaired theAHRA Education Foundation Silent Auction. Based onthe success of the auction, they are definitely following inthe footsteps of Chuck Mitchell.

Once again the CRA exam was administered at theAnnual Meeting. Sixty members sat for the exam. In aneffort to reach more of our members to give them theopportunity to receive this credential, on November 7,2003 the CRA exam will be offered in the following cities:Las Vegas, NV, Charlotte, NC, White Plains, NY, DallasTX, and St. Louis, MO.

Although we all are experiencing personnel shortages inour field, this did not hamper the number of attendees atthe annual meeting. This year there were over 2,386 reg-istered. Attendees arrived from as far away as Australia,Holland, and Puerto Rico.

Although the majority of the Annual Meeting attendees

were comprised of Radiology Managers, a number ofattendees came with an IS background. At the First-Time Attendee/New Member Breakfast, I spoke to aRadiologist who told me that his manager was unable toattend the meeting. However, as he was reviewing theprograms that were offered, he felt that they would bebeneficial to him in his practice, and so, he decided toattend in lieu of his manager.

This year 197 vendors participated and occupied over60,000 square feet in the exhibit hall. Last year, in NewOrleans, 174 vendors were onsite. What is exciting aboutthis year's number is the fact over the past year numer-ous mergers and buyouts have greatly reduced the num-ber of companies in our industry. To have an increase inthe number of exhibitors only reiterates the importantrole radiology administrators have in selection and pur-chase decisions and underscores the strength of ourorganization.

In closing, I would like to acknowledge the followingmembers for the awards/achievements that theyreceived this year: Gold Award-Sheila Sferrella, CRA,FAHRA; President's Award-Mel Allen, CRA, FAHRA; NewFellow-Debra Lopez, CRA, FAHRA; the Amersham Awardfor Excellence-Lauri McDonald, James Miller, KentJohnson, Lynn McVey, Darlene May; CreativeManagement Article Award-Wanda Casady, CRA,FAHRA, and Terry Dowd, CRA, FAHRA; OutstandingArticle Award-Shirley Pinette, CRA; Outstanding ColumnAward-Gary Duehring, PhD, CRA.

Finally, since I am not a connoisseur of wines, I will betransitioning from Sheila's favorite Sips to Mike's Tour 18- I am an avid golfer and will be sharing one of my favoritegolf holes with you each month. I hope you will have anopportunity to play some of these holes, and I look for-ward to your participation in the 5th Annual AHRAEducation Foundation Golf Tournament in 2004. Fore!

Of all of the courses I have played, my favorite course was Pebble Beach. So,I will start out with their signature hole, which is hole number 7, a par 3 thatplays 97 yards from the gold tee box. I have played this course three timesand, depending on the wind direction, I'veused clubs ranging from a 7 iron to a sandwedge. I've recorded a birdie, a par and a

bogey on this hole. To have some fun with this, if any-one has played the course that I will be mentioning in the newsletters, please submit your best score for that hole. At the end of my term, wewill add up the scores from the 18 holes that I selected and comparemy score to the best score submitted! Send your scores to me.

Ihave been backto work onlytwo days since

returning from theAnnual Meeting andmy desk is prettyclear of work to bedone, the emailsare almost caughtup and there arezero voice mails leftto return. I'm feel-ing pretty good!Talk about efficien-cy. I am so good! Imean, I am good.

Do you know what I mean? Sigh, thatpositive reinforcement didn't work forme either, how about you? This year'sAHRA Annual Meeting & Expositionwas fantastic. The information thatwas available was invaluable. Here aresome other tidbits of information Ilearned throughout the week:

· I learned that I have forgotten howto do some of the old 50s' & 60'sdances, and that my knees aren'tespecially fond of me trying to do thetwist. I also learned that other atten-dees are forgiving when you acciden-tally step on their feet while trying tolearn a new line dance.· Along with that, I learned that oneshould dance like no one is watching. However, since I am pretty tall, this is alittle hard to accomplish. · And amazingly, some people thinkthat no one is listening when they aresinging. Enough said here! Yikes!· I learned that when things do not goexactly right, I should put my thumbsto my ears and wave my fingers, whilesaying, "Bunny Bunny". After the fact,I learned that maybe this was just ajoke that was good for a laugh. · I picked up some important pointerson finance in radiology from Mel Allen, but I also found out that I don't knowExcel software nearly as well as hedoes.· I learned what I should strive for onweb page design and at the same timeI realized that my web site was going

to have to be completely redesigned.· I learned that I needed to have a"soothing friend" to help me out inrough times as well as "sandpaperfriends" to give it to me straight. I real-ized that I have way too many of thelatter.· I learned that 94% of what peoplehear me say will not be retained.Actually, this is good news; since noone remembers what you say, why sayit? · I learned about fusion and how greatit is at detecting difficult cancers. Myexcitement was short lived thoughwhen I remembered that we wererecently turned down by the State for aCON. But then, there is also the pos-sibility of the software!· I learned that a picture is worth athousand words and I like this.Especially since no one rememberswhat I say!· I learned that FFDM technology isnot clearly better than analog technol-ogy and that is a reason some areusing to not get into this technology.Hmmm…I better not tell anyone howbusy my two digital units are and howit has reduced my backlog of patientsand how the patients demand to bedone on them.· Lastly, I learned that anyone canwrite an article. I can't help but towonder though, if my thoughts about"dancing like no one is watching"apply here as well? "Write like no oneis reading it" I hope not…….

If you attended the meeting, you knowthat the Design Team did a great jobthis year. The opening ceremonieswere fantastic and the speakers werevery knowledgeable. For those of youthat didn't attend, we missed you. Ican hardly wait to see what is plannedfor AHRA's Annual Meeting &Exposition in Boston in August 2004.See you then!

Oh, by the way, I almost forgot,"TaDaaaa!"

As reported in lastmonth’s Link, and onAHRA’s website, the

Federal CommunicationsCommission intended to havea new set of rules take effectAugust 25, 2003 whichrequired written, signed con-sent in order for AHRA to sendfaxes. AHRA quickly respond-ed to those rules and began aprocess of obtaining fax per-mission forms from all mem-bers.

However, acting on petitionsfiled by the American Societyof Association Executives(ASAE) and other concernedbusiness interest organiza-tions, the FederalCommunications Commission(FCC) issued a stay of newregulations governing faxadvertisements for a period of16 months, until January 1,2005.

The FCC granted the stayrequest after receiving hun-dreds of comments andrequests for interpretationfrom associations and otherbusinesses over the past sev-eral weeks regarding the rule-making, published July 25 inthe Federal Register. Morethan 1,400 associationsvoiced support for ASAE'sstay request.

The new rules will now begiven more deliberate consid-eration to determine congres-sional intent.

Under the new partnership, BerlexImaging will provide a grant to pub-lish the first textbook in a seriesplanned by the AHRA in support ofits new Certified RadiologyAdministrator (CRA) Program. The book will cover topics suchas the ethics of health care financialmanagement, establishing a corpo-rate compliance program, budgeting, capital equipment purchasing andbilling and coding for reimbursement, among others.

"Time after time the AHRA has demon-strated its preeminent role in meetingmember needs through training andeducation," says Bill Sattin, MarketingManager of Customer Programs,Berlex Imaging. "Berlex shares in thiscommitment to education, and is excit-ed to partner with AHRA on a seminalwork anticipated to serve as a career-long resource and catalyst for theleadership development of diagnosticimaging professionals."

"On behalf of the AHRA, I thank Berlexfor its interest in participating in ameaningful way in the continueddevelopment of the CertifiedRadiology Administrator program,"says AHRA 2003 President Mark A.Viau, CRA, FAHRA. "As we developedthe program, it became clear thatthere is a dearth of seminal referenceson critical topic areas in radiologyadministration."

Berlex Imaging has a long associa-tion with the AHRA, participating withexhibits at annual meetings, includ-ing the association's most recent31st Annual Meeting & Expositionheld in Anaheim, CA where Berlexwas a Gold sponsor.
