A Christmas Eve Tradition Rediscovered by Fr. Peter, Rector Fathers Joseph, Jerry and I were talking at the dinner table tonight. Living in a rectory with five priests, things have evolved into an almost religious community—although we are all diocesan priests. But as we bantered, Jerry brought up the Mass of Christmas Eve. He asked, “Are you going to read the martyrology?” “The necrology?” Joseph asked. “No, the martyrology,” Jerry replied. “No,” I stated. “We’re not going to read that genealogy. No one wants to hear the genealogy from Matthew 1. We’re going to read the St. Luke Nativity account, and do the Midnight Mass readings.” “I’m not talking about the Lectionary,” Jerry stated. “There’s a Martyr-ology that is traditionally said in some churches on Christmas Eve, and it is beautiful. The lights can be dimmed, before the Mass begins, as the Martyrology is recited or better yet, chanted.”
At this point, Fr. Joseph and I were scratching our heads. I foolishly began to doubt Jerry’s wits, but Google quickly proved him right. Joseph and I were like, “Hey! It says here that after 1969, most churches stopped doing the Martyrology.” We weren’t even taught this. But what a neat tradition it turns out to be. Perhaps made more apropos in a year of suffering, loss, and difficulty for so many.
THE PROCLAMATION OF THE BIRTH OF CHRIST Today, the twenty–fifth day of December, unknown ages from the time when God created the heavens and the earth and then formed man and woman in his own image. Several thou-sand years after the flood, when God made the rainbow shine forth as a sign of the covenant. Twenty–one centuries from the time of Abraham and Sarah; thirteen centuries after Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt. Eleven hundred years from the time of Ruth and the Judges; one thousand years from the anointing of David as king; in the sixty–fifth week ac-cording to the prophecy of Daniel. In the one hundred and ninety–fourth Olympiad; the seven hundred and fifty–second year from the foundation of the city of Rome. The forty–second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus; the whole world being at peace, Jesus Christ, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to sanctify the world by his most merciful coming, being conceived by the Holy Spirit, and nine months having passed since his conception, was born in Bethlehem of Judea of the Virgin Mary. Today is the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & Sunday Masses are Live-Streamed

Snow Policy On Weekdays (Monday - Friday), the Shrine will be CLOSED if there is severe weather, this will usually be announced via the Shrine website, social media, and Flocknotes. But when the City of Boston imposes a parking ban, or closes schools and daycares, it typically means the Shrine will be closed as well. On Sundays, the Shrine will typically remain OPEN for Mass despite inclement weather.
