A special dinner reception was held on April 19, 2017 at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford. This annual celebration of support and generosity is our way of honoring our generous donors.

Keeping Her Mom’s Memory Alive

Surgi-Center staff at MidState.

Rebecca (Becky) Fennessy wanted to make a difference and give back in memory of her mother. For almost 15 years, her mother, Eileen Sampl, re-ceived care at MidState Medical Center. Suffering from a variety of conditions, receiving quality care close to home was important to Eileen, and being able to conveniently visit was just as important to Becky and her family. “It is great that people are able to receive so many services under one roof, in their own community,” Becky said.

Despite Eileen’s physical ailments, she always kept a positive and upbeat attitude. During the countless hours she spent at Midstate Medical Center, she would always try to cheer up others. She would wheel herself up and down the first floor hallway in her wheelchair, talking to patients and their families in an effort to bring them joy and comfort. Sadly, after spending the month of August 2016 at MidState, Becky’s mom passed away on August 29 of that year.

As the one-year anniversary of her mom’s passing approached, Becky wanted to provide some comfort to patients and their families just as her mom had done so many times before. She recalls the many hours she spent with her family sitting at the hospital, and thought it would be nice to com-pile some bags that could be given to patients’ families while they were waiting for their loved ones. Becky is a consultant for Thirty-One Gifts that afforded her fundraising opportuni-ties. With that in mind, Becky collect-ed her commission and money donated by more than 20 of her friends and family. She had enough to pur-chase 30 tote bags from Thirty-One Gifts along with a variety of self-care items to fill the bags. Items included: fleece blankets, hand sanitizer, adult coloring books, colored pencils, hand lotion, puzzle books, notepads, pens, water and snacks.

It is clear by Becky’s story, she spent a lot of time visiting and taking good

care of her mom during her illness. She is passionate about keeping her mom’s memory alive and will consider doing another fundraiser in the future with her family and friends. Becky is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual and group ther-apy to adults dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. She loves spending time with her family, especially her husband and four-year-old son.

Central Region Cancer Institutes Receive Donations from ‘Love Promise’ The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) and MidState Medical Center received donations from the Love Promise Campaign, a partnership between the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Subaru, to support those fighting cancer. Two local Subaru dealerships chose the cancer institutes as the recipients of their donation, which featured blankets and arts and crafts kits, along with care cards that contain messages of hope and support for those undergoing treatment. The cancer institute at HOCC received this generous gift from Schaller Subaru in Berlin, and MidState received their donation from Quality Subaru in Wallingford.

Spring/Summer 2018 Issue

In September, MidState Medical Auxiliary committed $100,000 in support of MidState’s Family Birthing Center’s waiting area renovation project. The renovation is currently underway and upon completion, the patient waiting area will feature: a glass window wall with doorway to separate waiting area to main galleria; roller blinds; refreshed seating for families including lounge chairs and side tables; updated signage, television and artwork. Also included will be a security system upgrade featuring a state-of-the-art video intercom system so patients and visitors can interact with staff when checking into the unit. This generous donation by the Auxiliary will fund the project in full.

By updating all of these amenities, Amy Kelleher MSN, RN, RNC-OB, Central Region Director Women and Infants stated, “We are hoping to heighten the experience for visitors while they relax in this newly updated waiting area. We are so grateful for such a generous donation and how it will enlighten the birthing experience for our patients, families and other visitors.”

Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute Sees First Cases

One of our proudest accomplishments this past year was the opening of the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute at MidState Medical Center. The Institute brings together the region’s best orthopaedic surgeons to create a new center for the care and recovery of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.

The institute, the first of its kind in central Connecticut, offers patients exclusive access to the latest technology that brings more precision to orthopaedic care, including Makoplasty robotic assisted surgery and Mazor X robotic assisted spine surgery.

Once renovations are complete, the Institute will be 14,500 square feet, including 14 operating rooms. The institute was designed with patients’ diverse needs in mind, offering 21 all private rooms and valet parking. While it might feel more like a hotel than a hospital, the design is deliberate. Every detail, including the modern color selection, the motivational artwork and the patient curtain, were all chosen to achieve a calming and healing environment that encourages patients to begin moving and get back to the activities they love.

The institute is now home to surgeons from the Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists and Comprehensive Orthopaedics practices. Comprehensive Orthopaedics has been completing cases since early April and Dr. John McCallum performed the Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists’ first three knee replacement surgeries at the institute on May 10, 2017. The Institute maintains the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its Knee and Hip Replacement Program, having attained The Joint Commission’s highest, national standards. The Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute is also designated as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement from Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Our main goal is to provide patients with an exceptional experience, getting them back to what they love doing, all while providing safe, efficient and cost-effective orthopaedic care,” said Andrew Turczak, PA-C, MHS, director of institute operations.

Headache Center Comes to MidState Medical Center

Specialized services for the management of headache was brought to MidState Medical Center on Nov. 1, 2016 with the addition of Hartford HealthCare Medical Group providers Dr. Abby Chua, DO, and Renee Kane, APRN.

The Hartford HealthCare Headache Center is dedicated to providing excellence in diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders, helping patients minimize pain and increase their ability to function.

The HHC Headache Center was first established in Wethersfield and West Hartford under the leadership of Dr. Brian Grosberg, medical director of the center, and now is at MidState and the Central Region, expanding services further south.

Dr. Chua leads the practice on the MidState campus and brings with her a special expertise. She is a board certified neurologist who specializes in headache medicine. She completed a fellowship at Tomas Jefferson University, a residency at Temple University Hospital, and earned her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Mazor X Up and Running at MidState

Hartford HealthCare (HHC) became the first healthcare system in the Northeast to pioneer the latest robotic technology for spine surgery. The new robotic system, called Mazor X, gives surgeons the most-advanced resources to enhance patient safety and accuracy in planning and performing spine surgeries. Mazor X robotic surgery is available at the Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital and at MidState Medical Center. Surgeons will use the technology for spinal fusion procedures to treat conditions such as spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.

Patients with these conditions often suffer from debilitating symptoms such as lower back pain, leg pain and sciatica. Over time, surgeons also will apply the robotic technology to procedures for the thoracic and cervical vertebrae to treat spinal deformities such as scoliosis.

During surgery, bone tissue, screws and plates are placed in the problem area of the spine, and the body’s natural bone growth gradually fuses the vertebrae. The procedure requires precise placement of surgical screws and implants, and that’s where Mazor X comes in. Surgeons can develop a detailed plan well before the surgery takes place.

Hartford HealthCare and CCMC Launch Partnership

In April 2017, Hartford HealthCare (HHC) and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) officially launched their partnership to bring enhanced neonatal care to the Central Region.

This partnership brings opportunities for MidState Medical Center and The Hospital of Central Connecticut to provide expanded services to the community and enhanced learning experiences for clinicians. CCMC providers are known as experts in the field and have access to additional resources that will contribute to the outstanding care already provided in the Central Region every day. Our partnership with CCMC also will enable The Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState Medical Center to optimize operational efficiencies, quality outcomes, and financial performance.

As part of HHC agreement with CCMC, all neonatal medicine physicians and neonatal mid-level providers at both The Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState have become employees of CCMC.
