A Message from the Executive Director
“ THANK YOU”
FROM ALL OF US AT THE STILLAGUAMISH SENIOR CENTER EVERGREEN LODGE #2 AOUW
Six years ago the Stillaguamish Senior Center was chosen as one of eight organizations to receive annual
funding from the Evergreen Lodge #2 AOUW, a subordinate of the original Seattle Grand Regional Lodge.
The main lodge still remains in Seattle but is not as active. The Evergreen Lodge owned a building in down
town Seattle. It was sold to the state so that the freeway could be built. The proceeds from the sale went into
their building fund and with the monies they made safe investments.
The lodge decided to use some of the monies towards donations to organizations: The first organization to
receive funding was the Woodland Park Zoo for a bus so that senior citizens would be able to get around the
zoo. Funds were also given to the Seattle Blood Bank for two mobile units, Salvation Army for disaster relief
and to sponsor a horse for disabled children. After about 8 years they decided to invest the funds in 4 different
managed funds. In order to stay tax free they were required to give a percentage of their monies to organiza-
tions with charitable status. Helen Starr, a member of the lodge and a longtime member of the Stillaguamish
Senior Center was very instrumental in the Center being chosen as one of the recipients of the funds.
As members became inactive, the Lodge Trustees decided it was time to dissolve the organization and
divide the fund amongst the eight organizations that were receiving the annual donations as a final donation.
Three weeks ago the Stillaguamish Senior Center received a generous donation of $64,000. With this generous
gift from the Evergreen Lodge #2 AOUW, the Stillaguamish Senior Center will continue to be successful in
connecting with seniors through its wide range of programs and services.
Thanks again Lodge Members for your generous support of our efforts to continue our mission of
enhancing the quality of life for our senior citizens.
THE TULALIP TRIBE’S CHARITABLE FOUNDATION GRANT On behalf of the Stillaguamish Senior Center we would like to thank The Tulalip Tribe for their generous
gift of $15,000 to go toward SSC’s Transportation Program.
The grant from the Tulalip Tribe will give us the ability to purchase a wheelchair lift that will allow those
seniors with mobility issues to be a part of our transportation program. Transportation for seniors is a major
obstacle in obtaining services that are needed to age in place. By growing the availability of our transportation
we are increasing the opportunity for seniors to participate in programs and services that over time will allow
them to remain independent.
With the help of donations from organizations such as the Tulalip Tribe, the Stillaguamish Senior Center
will grow and be the best resource for senior citizens in this community who are making informed choices,
leading healthy lives and navigating life transitions.
Thanks again for your generous support of our efforts to continue enhancing our Transportation Program.

Volunteerism
Do you want to add more meaning to your
life, but are unsure of how to do so?
Would you like to forget about your troubles, if only temporarily, while you help someone
else?
If you answer “yes” to these questions, becoming a volunteer may benefit you and your life.
Volunteering helps bolster self-esteem. When you help someone else, you feel better about
yourself. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded, helpful people. Making new
friends can become more difficult as you grow older. When you participate in activities you
enjoy and you meet people with whom you have something in common. Regardless you, your
age or physical limitation, you can become a volunteer. Becoming involved is one of the most
rewarding ways to enrich your life. Get involved and become a volunteer at the
Stillaguamish Senior Center!!!!!
Volunteering is one way of giving back to your Senior Center. Volunteers are the heart of
the Center and we can always use more heart, so if you are not volunteering contact the Center

Twelve years ago, on a moonlit rooftop above Washington Square, Lyla Novacek, a sheltered young cellist, and Louis Connelly, a charismatic Irish singer-songwriter, were drawn together by a street musician's rendition of "Moondance" and fell in love. After the most romantic night of her life, Lyla promised to meet Louis again but, despite her protests, her father rushed her to her next concert--leaving Louis to believe that she didn't care. Lyla’s hope for love is lost when she is led to believe, months later, that she had lost their unborn child in a car accident. Years passed with neither of them knowing the truth. Now, the infant secretly given away by Lyla's father has grown into an unusually gifted child who hears music all around him and can turn the rustling of wind through a wheat field into a beautiful symphony with himself at its center. He holds an unwavering belief that his parents are alive and want him as much as he wants them. He believes that if his parents can hear his music, they will find him. Unbeknownst to August, they have already begun that journey.

SUGGESTION BOX
Do you ever give thought to what programs you would like to see at the Senior Center?
We have a new year before us.
Many programs at the Senior Center have been put into motion because someone had a
concept and made a recommendation to start a class or an activity.
What ideas do you have?
What changes would you like to see?
Are you ready to be a chairman (chairwoman) of a new program?
What would entice you to utilize the Senior Center more?
If you could have everything you wanted here, what would it be?
What would it look like?
How can we get it?
What would it do to increase participation?
Get involved with your Senior Center, start a new program or class, help plan a trip with the
Program Administrator, give suggestions for the Center’s advisory council and board,
become a volunteer and help the Center in a variety of ways.
Drop off your suggestions at the Program Administrator’s office or the Director’s office, or
turn them in to the receptionist.
PLEASE GIVE US YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER SO WE CAN CONTACT YOU

Wilma Wheeler was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma as Wilma Hannah. She had two sisters and they were all
raised on the family farm of 160 acres in Mulhall, Oklahoma.
Wilma attended school in Mulhall, graduating from Mulhall High School in 1955. She got married in her
senior year to Danford Wheeler and moved to Wichita, Kansas where he was working at Boeing. They met in
high school. Wilma went back to Oklahoma to graduate with her class. Wilma and Danford have been
married for 57 years. Dan was making $1.05 an hour at Boeing when he first started there.
They had their first child in 1956 and ended up having 4 children total. One lives in Bryant, another in
Stanwood, one in Everett and the other in Woodland Hills, California. Wilma has enjoyed caring for
grandchildren and great grandkids, along the way.
Wilma worked at Cessna Aircraft for 5 years and in the fall of 1978 they moved to Snohomish. Dan
transferred from Boeing in Oklahoma to Everett at that time. Wilma worked at General Telephone for 2 yrs.
until she reinjured her back from a previous surgery. After another surgery she didn’t go back to work at the
telephone company. She went to Business School in Mt. Vernon for data entry and then got herself a job at
Boeing. She worked there for 8 years.
During this time they purchased a home west of Lake Goodwin in 1982.
In 1996 after Boeing, Dan worked for contractors and went to Italy for 5 weeks to work, Wilma went too.
In 1997 Wilma moved to the family farm in Oklahoma while Dan worked in Alabama. On May 3rd. 1999
a tornado took the family farm away. She wasn’t at home and thank goodness no one was hurt. They stayed
in Oklahoma until 2000 and then moved back to Washington State, settling once again at the Lake Goodwin
home.
Wilma stated volunteering in the kitchen at the Center and did that from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 to 2006
both Wilma an Dan worked at Wall-mart. In 2006 Wilma once again had the time to volunteer at the Stilly
Center. She works at Bingo on Tuesdays and sells raffle tickets on Friday during the luncheon.
Be sure to buy your ticket from her when you see her on Friday’s—you might just be a winner !!!!

The Orange Cones of 2012 The highways are a colored curse, traffic could hardly be any worse.
For miles the backup strings along, It’s evident there is something wrong.
Those orange cones announce the news, roadwork ahead by highway crews.
Exhaust fumes choke and patience wanes, the grip of stress is in your veins.
Then up ahead, oh, woe is you—three lanes now dwindle down to two.
The freeway has an orange glow….of traffic barrels & cones don’t you know.
The orange vests are everywhere, they probable have orange underwear ?
Wait ! There’s a sign I read….this is no fun, two lanes have dwindled down to one.
In Spring things may improve a bit, or are we just getting use to it ?????
In Summer there stirs familiar news, of pending road improvement blues.
Our roads become a colored curse and traffic is definitely getting worse.
When winter comes, with snow and ice, we all must pay a different price.
And with the floods, there come the lines of “Water over roadway signs”.
Remember too in 2013, the white lines you drive between,
the orange stuff will re-appear, the barrels, signs and other gear.
We’ll all be victims like sitting ducks, for the road machines and gravel trucks.
