PBN’s 2015 Business Leadership Hawai‘i eventBY NANCY DANIELS

Each year, the Pacific Business News’ Business Leadership Hawai‘i event recognizes the best in Hawai‘i business. This event has been Hawai‘i’s premier business recognition for the last 15 years and was held Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Sheraton Waikiki. Outrigger was nominated in the Innovative Company of the Year category and was recognized for embracing the authentic cultural programs and amenities unique to each of the iconic destinations in which we do business and sharing that with our guests in The Outrigger Way. We had a table full of supporters on hand with fingers crossed and were proud to be recognized as a finalist in our category. Congratulations to other finalists in our category: Goldwings Supply, Inc.; Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods; Inovi Green; and Shari Saiki Designs and to Devleague who won top honors.

That’s right! Outrigger has an exclusive partnership with Kahala Sportswear to debut a collaborative shirt collection, with proceeds going to support the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) and its Worldwide Voyage. The limited edition collection includes two prints and two aloha shirt styles featuring the PVS and Outrigger logos. The first of two shirts are now available in Kahala Sportswear retail locations, select Macy’s stores and online at kahala.com. Our guiding principles include perpetuating Hawai‘i’s culture, protecting our planet, and instilling these values in the next generation, and we’ve long felt that PVS is cut from the same cloth with a mission of navigating toward a healthy and sustainable future. It’s an honor to be able to support PVS with this new collection and we’re pleased that our partnership with Kahala has been the perfect fit. Just in time for the holidays, the shirts are available in three different “reverse-print” colors. The spring line will feature modern and bright colors and will debut in summer 2016. Happy holiday shopping!

Fun activities were organized and clowns kept the children entertained throughout the day. A drawing was held for the children with all participants winning gifts. Good times and good fun was had by all.

the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. On the beach Kumu Blaine Kia and the Men of Kahulaliwai responded in kind, welcoming Hawai‘iloa. Traditional chants, hula kahiko and the beating of the drums by Hālau Ka Waikahe Lani Malie followed as Dr. Chuck Kelley, Dean Nakasone and Outrigger ‘ohana, friends and guests gathered in anticipation of her arrival. Dr. Chuck and chanter Kaleo Kia paddled out on canoe to greet Hawai‘iloa and her crew with ho‘okupu (gifts) presented to Captain Russell. In return, an oli was presented to Dr. Chuck accepting the ho‘okupu. Passengers aboard Hawai‘iloa Tay Perry and VP of The Friends and Hōkūle‘a and crewmember Kaina Holomalia returned to shore with Dr. Chuck and Kaleo where a procession of Outrigger hosts awaited with lei. The ceremony continued in the Ocean Tower lobby with a display of canoe building tools, scale models, maps and literature. “Talk Story” sessions were held with Hōkūle‘a crewmembers Dr. Michi Wong, Mikiala Akiona and Kaina Holomalia. Kaina was on Hōkūle‘a’s leg to Mauritus and had the opportunity to stay at the Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort. When asked about his experience on the island, he replied, “I enjoyed the hot shower and the most comfortable bed.” Video footage of Hōkūle‘a’s worldwide voyage was shown and students from the Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy were on-hand to share lessons learned at an early age of sailing canoe, maritime skills, non-instrumental navigation, elemental observations, teamwork and communication. A variety of Hawaiian cultural activities were offered including mini canoe making by Calvin Hoe, a display of Hawaiian weapons, fish hooks and the making of traditional hau cordage by Umi Kai, canoe petroglyph stamping and coloring taught by Lynn Cook, and ti-leaf kūpe‘e by Kahoaka. VIPs who were invited to “The Outrigger Journal” book launch were escorted to the Voyager’s Deck for a Champagne brunch hosted by Where Hawaii, a feast fit for ali‘i of tasty food samplings of the Pacific including fresh island fruit, taro, ‘ulu, coconut, seafood chowder, mini SPAM musubi, salmon and avocado, fresh corned beef patties, Tahitian poisson cru and more.

beverage department humming and, as things moved forward, I gave her more and wider responsibilities, which she graciously accepted and gracefully fulfilled. In 1993, David Carey assumed Outrigger’s CEO responsibilities and, when we sold the Prince Kuhio in 1999, he asked Nurhan to remain with Outrigger as coordinator of the wide range of meeting and banquet events in our various Waikīkī properties, particularly at our two beachfront hotels and the OHANA Waikiki East. Nurhan has also coordinated a number of outdoor events away from Waikīkī, many of which involved setting up tents, providing electric power and arranging for lighting, field kitchens, portable restrooms, etc. Activities like these must be coordinated much in the way a maestro coordinates a symphony orchestra playing for a big theatrical production like the Nutcracker ballet. Everything must be perfect and exquisitely timed. The musicians, dancers and stagehands must work like one. At an Outrigger banquet or event, our guests expect warm steaks, crisp salads and cold ice cream.

In her 33-plus years at Outrigger, Nurhan never failed our ‘ohana or fell short of guest expectations! What an enviable record she has compiled! This week, you might say we “turned the tables” on Nurhan. Dr. Chuck and his wife Jenny invited members of the Kelley family to their home for a dinner honoring her. The theme of the evening recognized Nurhan’s roots in Turkey. Each guest was asked to bring a dish of popular Eastern Mediterranean fare. Nurhan did not have to lift anything other than a fork holding a bite of tasty kebab or baklava or a glass of wine in response to a cheerful toast. And there were many of those throughout the evening. Nurhan, thanks for all you have done for Outrigger, our guests and ‘ohana. We wish you good health, long life and lots of fun in the years to come.
