A. Materials for Drawing DRAWING

1. A3 (29cm x 42cm - 11.5” x 16.5“) drawing paper – 2 sheets or larger sizes for large drawings

2. Mechanical pencils (0.5mm or 0.3 mm) with HB lead, or ordinary pencils HB, 2B, F and a pencil sharpener

3. Eraser or putty 4. Long ruler (60cm - 24”) 5. Compass for drawing circles 6. Tracing paper 7. Masking tape to attach paper to drawing board 8. Drawing board (you can obtain a cheap drawing board by buying pre-cut MDF or

marine plywood (10 mm – 3/8“ thickness) at any size larger than the paper, e.g. 18” x 24”).

BRUSH & INK After you have completed the pencil drawing, you may wish to ink in the lines. This gives you a finalized drawing – a piece of art in its own right. You will need:

1. An outlining brush (size 0, 00 or 000). I prefer Winsor & Newton finest sable, series 7, size 00, or a similar brush by DaVinci, Daler & Rowney or any reputable art supplier. They are expensive, so if your budget does not permit, a synthetic version of the above sizes will do.

2. Any acrylic black ink (e.g: Winsor & Newton) or any black drawing ink 3. Water container (an old glass jar will do) and small plate 4. Rag or tissue paper 5. Scrap paper for testing your brush strokes

This list of art materials is for students who have not attended previous art courses and for those who want to start painting. The best paints to learn painting are Designers Gouache, in particular Winsor & Newton. Other good brands are Schminke, Daler-Rowney, Lefranc & Bourgeois. The items marked * are necessary, all others are optional. The initial costs might be high, but these paints will last you for years.

1. PAINTS: Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache Colours: Blue: Indigo*, Cobalt Blue*, Cerrulean Blue, Ultramarine, Turquoise. Green: Emerald Green*, Winsor Green*, Oxide of Chromium. Red: Flame red*, Madder Carmine*, Alizarin Crimson, Perylene Maroon. Yellow: Golden Yellow *, Orange Deep lake *, Lemon Yellow Browns: Yellow Ochre *, Burnt Siena *, Van Dyke Brown.
