When I became your pastor six years ago our parish had no Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). Within a few months we established one with a new cons tu on that was clearly mission oriented. Following

guidelines from the Archdiocese of Chicago, the PPC has four standing commi ees: Human Concerns, Educa on, Parish Life, and Spiritual Life. The real work of the PPC is done by the commi ees which are comprised of PPC members and other parishioners. Every year one-half of the body goes out of office and new members are installed. It’s not always easy for me to find parishioners who are willing to serve the parish in this way but I’m happy to report that this year it was easier and we will have a really excep onal Council. Here are the names of the new members: Duncan Campbell, Ania Dedio, Kevin FioRito, Carol Kuk, John McCullough, Laura Pinto, Phil Serpico, Sam Rinaldi, Derek Smyla, Eileen Surprenant, Violet Valadaka, and Veronica Woods. Returning PPC members are: James Bratager, Albert Daza, Alison Fernandes, Dan FioRito, Jeanne Henschell, Anna Lazzaro, John Martens, Michael Rice, Sean Toohey, Chris ne Sergo. Ed Bellock returns as chair of the PPC. The clergy in the parish are ex officio members: myself, our parochial vicars and two permanent deacons. It’s a much larger PPC this year than before because more people are needed owing to the increase of ac vi es in the parish. Let me say something about the four standing commi ees. The Human Concerns Commi ee, chaired by Chris ne Sergo, plans ac vi es with our twin Dominican parish in Chicago, St. Pius V. It also overseas our outreach to the needy and the elderly. The Educa on Commi ee is tasked with arranging talks and programs that pertain to human forma on such as the recently-held mee ng on Schole, the “leisure learning” program, and today’s talk on the great Abrahamic faiths by Brother Joseph Kilikevice, OP. The Spiritual Life Commi ee organizes spiritual renewal events, such as the prayer program “Lord, Teach Me to Pray”. (The women’s group recently started for the second me. It meets at 12:30 pm every Friday in Kyte Hall. New members are welcome). It has also sponsored books and religious ar cle sales. The Parish Life Commi ee organizes events in the parish that bring parishioners together, most notably the annual Parish Picnic which took place earlier this month. I’m very grateful for the hard work of all the PPC members. Finally, I’m sorry to announce that we had another break-in this week (the third in six months). An employee encountered a stranger in the school office at 6am on Monday. The suspect fled down Lathrop but was apprehended within a few minutes by the River Forest Police. A rela vely small amount of money was taken but later returned to us by the police. A special thank you to the police and our employee. Have a great week! Fr. Tom McDermo , OP

Re lection on Sunday’s Readings

June 24th, 2018 Na vity of St. John the Bap st

First Reading (Is 49:1-6). This reading has many features of a typical prophe c call except that the prophet addressed is most likely Israel itself. It is the opening sec on of the second of the Suffering Servant Songs.

Second Reading (Acts 13:22-26). Paul shows all the steps which lead up to Jesus Christ in this speech which he gave in the synagogue in the city of An och of Pisidia. It is interes ng that he men ons John the Bap st without much introduc on. The reason is probably that the disciples of the Bap st con nued to follow him a er Jesus began his own ministry (Mt 9:14-17; Mk2:8-22; Lk 5:33-39). There is even the sugges on in the Gospel of John of rivalry between disciples of Jesus and John (4:1). John remained popular in Judea a er his death (MT 21:23; Mk 11:27-33; Lk 20:1-8). John’s reputa on, and perhaps groups of his disciples traveled well beyond Judea, Samaria, and Galilee. When Paul arrives in Ephesus of Asia Minor he meets Apollos, a solid teacher who knew ‘only the bap sm of John’ (Acts 18:25). In Ephesus Paul also finds other people who know the Bap sm of John but have never heard of the Holy Spirit (19:1-7). John was a respected and famous man. It is likely for this reason that Paul speaks of him without much introduc on. But Paul wants Jesus to enjoy the even greater reputa on that he and the Church believe he deserves.

Gospel (Lk 1:57-66, 80). Some 20,000 priests, descendants of Aaron and Levi, were eligible to offer incense on the golden altar of the sanctuary in the Temple in Jerusalem. Each one, chosen by lot, could do so just once in all his life. When Zechariah was chosen for this highest honor that life could bring to an ordinary Israelite of the priestly tribe, he was offering the incense wholly alone before God, when the angel Gabriel appeared to him. Among other things, Gabriel told Zechariah that his wife, Elizabeth, would have a child and that he would call him John. The literal meaning of this name is ‘Yahweh has shown favor.’ The child’s name describes the source and character of the gi he is. Zechariah responded to the strange predic ons and promises with the ques on, ‘How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.’ Gabriel struck Zechariah dumb ‘un l the day these things take place.’ It is not un l John’s circumcision eight days a er his birth that Zechariah, upon wri ng John’s name, is made able to speak.

Personalism: The Philosophy We Need By David Brooks www.ny mes.com

One of the lessons of a life in journalism is that people are always way more complicated than you think. We talk in shorthand about “Trump voters” or “social jus ce warriors,” but when you actually meet people they defy categories. Someone might be a La na lesbian who loves the N.R.A. or a socialist Mormon cowboy from Arizona.| Moreover, most actual human beings are filled with ambivalences. Most poli cal ac vists I know love parts of their party and despise parts of their party. A whole life me of experience, joy and pain goes into that complexity, and it insults their lives to try to reduce them to a label that ignores that. Yet our culture does a pre y good job of ignoring the uniqueness and depth of each person. Pollsters see in terms of broad demographic groups. Big data counts people as if it were coun ng apples. At the extreme, evolu onary psychology reduces people to biological drives, capitalism reduces people to economic self-interest, modern Marxism to their class posi on and mul culturalism to their racial one. Consumerism treats people as mere selves — as shallow creatures concerned merely with the experience of pleasure and the acquisi on of stuff. Back in 1968, Karol Wojtyla wrote, “The evil of our mes consists in the first place in a kind of degrada on, indeed in a pulveriza on, of the fundamental uniqueness of each human person.” That’s s ll true. So this might be a perfect me for a revival of personalism. Personalism is a philosophic tendency built on the infinite uniqueness and depth of each person. Over the years people like Walt Whitman, Mar n Luther King, William James, Peter Maurin and Wojtyla (who went on to become Pope John Paul II) have called themselves personalists, but the movement is s ll something of a philosophic nub. It’s not exactly famous. Personalism starts by drawing a line between humans and other animals. Your dog is great, but there is a depth, complexity

and superabundance to each human personality that gives each person unique, infinite dignity. Despite what the achievement culture teaches, that dignity does not depend on what you do, how successful you are or whether your school calls you gi ed. Infinite worth is inherent in being human. Every human encounter is a mee ng of equals. Doing community service isn’t about saving the poor; it’s a mee ng of absolute equals as both seek to change and grow. The first responsibility of personalism is to see each other person in his or her full depth. This is astonishingly hard to do. As we go through our busy days it’s normal to want to establish I-It rela onships — with the security guard in your building or the office worker down the hall. Life is busy, and some mes we just need to reduce people to their superficial func on. But personalism asks, as much as possible, for I-Thou encounters: that you just don’t regard people as a data point, but as emerging out of the full narra ve, and that you try, when you can, to get to know their stories, or at least to realize that everybody is in a struggle you know nothing about. The second responsibility of personalism is self-gi ing. Twen eth-century psychologists like Carl Rogers treated people as self-actualizing beings — get in touch with yourself. Descartes tried to separate individual reason from the bonding emo ons. Nikolai Berdyaev said that tends to turn people into self-enclosed monads, with no doors or windows. Personalists believe that people are “open wholes.” They find their perfec on in communion with other whole persons. The crucial ques ons in life are not “what” ques ons — what do I do? They are “who” ques ons — who do I follow, who do I serve, who do I love? The reason for life, Jacques Maritain wrote, is “self-mastery for the purpose of self-giving.” It’s to give yourself as a gi to people and causes you love and to receive such gi s for others. It is through this love that each person brings unity to his or her fragmented personality. Through this love, people touch the full personhood in others and purify the full personhood in themselves. The third responsibility of personalism is availability: to be open for this kind of giving and friendship. This is a tough one, too; life is busy, and being available for people takes me and inten onality. Margarita Mooney of Princeton Theological Seminary has wri en that personalism is a middle way between authoritarian collec vism and radical individualism. The former subsumes the individual within the collec ve. The la er uses the group to serve the interests of the self. Personalism demands that we change the way we structure our ins tu ons. A company that treats people as units to simply maximize shareholder return is showing contempt for its own workers. Schools that treat students as brains on a s ck are not preparing them to lead whole lives. The big point is that today’s social fragmenta on didn’t spring from shallow roots. It sprang from worldviews that amputated people from their own depths and divided them into simplis c, fla ened iden es. That has to change. As Charles Péguy said, “The revolu on is moral or not at all.” A version of this article appears in print on June 14, 2018, on Page A25 of the

New York edition with the headline: Personalism: The Philosophy We Need.

Within Abraham’s

Tent

A presentation on the common religious ancestry of Jews, Christians and Muslims by

Br. Joseph Kilikevice , OP

Sunday, June 24 at 12:15 PM in Kyte Hall, Room 3

J ews, Christians and Muslims share a common religious ancestry. The tent of Abraham shelters us together as sisters and brothers, a fact seldom if ever accurately

portrayed in the news media. The words and spirit of the Second Vatican Council as well as those of the religious assemblies of Jews and Muslims encourage and fortify the voices that are now being heard from within the family of Abraham. Acknowledging our differences and recognizing the richness of our spiritual heritage, we seek to understand and respect each other. By embracing the diversity inherent in religions, this presentation seeks to heal divisions and promote, peace, harmony and love among all who are the offspring of Abraham, living beneath his spiritual tent.

Br. Joseph Kilikevice, OP is a friar of the Central Province of Dominicans, the founding director of the Shem Center for Interfaith Spirituality, Oak Park, Illinois, and a director of interfaith retreats throughout the country. Through the use of ritual, chant, dance and other forms of prayer he seeks to bring peace into the world through interfaith understanding and respect.

Farewell

Fr. Raymond Bryce, OP!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It's me for me to fly the coop! (see photo) I came to St Vincent Ferrer under the auspices of filling in for Fr. DeTemple with the expecta on that I would be reassigned a er six months. When the news came that he would not be able to return in the near future, I had greatly hoped to extend my tenure here at the parish. I have loved my me with you all and relished ge ng to know you and your families. The Lord is definitely at work among you and I have been blessed to be here to see it. I hope some day to be able to return to St Vincent's on a more permanent basis--keep the lights on for me! In the mean me, I won't be far away. I am being reassigned to St Pius V Catholic Church down on 19th and Ashland Ave in the Pilsen neighborhood. The pastor there is leaving to do some special work in Puerto Rico on behalf of the superior general of our Order. I will be part of an interim pastoral team that administrates the parish un l a new pastor is named. I invite you to drop in and say hi when you can as will I when I have a chance to visit River Forest. Let us pray for one another and for faithful and holy voca ons to the Dominicans. God bless you all!"

SVF School enrollment is steady and we continue to build a reputation for excellence in Catholic education; however, many of our students require financial assistance that we

need your help providing.

We believe that St. Vincent Ferrer should be accessible to all students—regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is made up of wonderful families sacrifice greatly to give their children a quality Catholic education, but many still need help in covering the costs. Our third-party financial aid partner (FACTS) has assessed that our St. Vincent Ferrer Families need $187,477 in tuition for our upcoming school year. Unfortunate-ly, our budget only provides us with 15% of this need. Our commitment to these families is unwavering, but we need your help!

Our students go on to some of the top high schools in the area and we have a record of strong and accomplished alumni. When Jesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan and was baptized by John the Baptist, he did so not because he

was in need of repentance, or conversion: he did it to be among

people who need forgiveness, among us sinners, and to take upon himself the

burden of our sins.
