Dear Red Hawks,

We are on a journey to become World Class. That means we want all students and staff to learn deeply, care deeply, communicate clearly, have balance, and be connected. We are making great progress. Some stand-outs this month include three examples of passionate, authentic learning:

1. Our AP Research students spent the year studying about a topic of their choice. For instance,

• Maddie Purvis, next year’s Student Congress President (congratulations!), studied the correlation between academic pressure and migraine severity.

• Anabela Dokic, interested in becoming a chief justice, chose to study whether an interminate or determinate sentencing in Oregon, Oklahoma, Bosnia and Herezgovina is more efficient.

• Rishita Godeti, who will pursue a career in engineering, studied the impact of various management styles on employee well-being in the American auto industry.

• And Jacob Slimak, who is interested in computer programing and engineering, chose to explore a new av- enue by evaluating various music genres impact on teen running performance.

Students worked with community experts as they conducted original research. Last week many Red Hawks as well as Central Office administrators and teacher leaders heard their adjudicated oral defenses and read their mini dis-sertations. I am amazed with our AP Capstone student’s masters level work and with teacher Rachel Webb’s guid-ance. I am equally appreciative of the assistance from colleagues Brenda Rice, Sue Syme, Stacie Vought, Athens Administration and all who gave feedback, support, and encouragement.

2. Our Athens TV students presented their work and were judged by industry professionals at festivals through out the U.S. Three competitions were:

• The NATAS Student Production Awards. • The DAFT Michigan Student Film Festival, which is the longest running student film festival in the country. • The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association Awards; MIPA is run by the MSU School of Journalism

and awards

Our student’s work certainly connected with the judges at the NATAS Michigan Student Production Awards Athens TV had 9 wins and 11 nominations, the most by any program ever. Rachel Goodman had 5 wins and 7 nomina-tions, the most for any student ever. Congratulations to all of our TV students and to teacher Mr. Adam Burns! Please see all winners on pages 10-11.

3. Our faculty are also passionately learning and honing their craft. Next week, we will hold a Learning Showcase where each department will present their most effective and innovative Deep Learning 6 C example (see the World Class blue pillar bullets for clarification). Teachers will share (1) the lesson and the purpose for kids learning it, (2) what the learning looked like (pictures, video, etc.), and (3) what students learned/accomplished. Addition-ally, presenters will (4) highlight how the lesson connects to the 6c’s, and (5) share what they would do differently next time to deepen the learning. A guiding Deep Learning Attributes handout can be found on page 4. Thank you to Rita Briguglio, Erich Beregszaszy, Eric Flessa, Allison Stefanski, and Bill Turner for leading this charge.

We are very blessed to have such exceptional kids, parents, teachers and staff. That, coupled with our desire to always improve, is a winning combination and certainly why Athens and Troy Schools continue to receive national acclaim. This month Athens was given the Great School’s College Success Award in recogni-tion for doing an outstanding job preparing graduating seniors for postsecondary success. Congratulations to all, for collectively we make this award possible.

As we begin to wrap up this school year, we sincerely thank our parents and family members who volunteered their time and energy. You make Athens great, and you inspire us to be great!

STUDENT CONGRESS NEWS Student Congress has been actively involved in the Michigan Association of Student Councils (MASC) and the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) this year. In December, we attended the OAA Leadership Con-ference at Oakland Schools. At this conference, as well as at the MASC Regional Conference in February, we shared how we organize Charity Week. We also attended the MASC State Conference held March 24-26 in Grand Rapids, and again present-ed Charity Week. Student Congress members Hailey Abro, Lauren Ha-noosh, and Julia Lower were se-lected as a “Best in Showcase” for their Charity Week presentation! Congratulations! In addition, we are attending the OAA Leadership Summit this month at Oakland Schools. Special recog-nition goes to Luis Bello, Mahdee Rahman, and Noel Rezanka, our OAA representatives this year, and Mr. Shawn DuFresne, who served as OAA Treasurer. They helped in the planning of the conferences and other activities throughout the year with other OAA member school rep-resentatives.

Clinic NewsIt’s hard to believe that another school year is rapidly coming to an end! At this time, we would like to personally thank all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. Without you, the clinic would not be what it is: a convenient, safe place to come to when in need.

Please consider volunteering for three hours, once/twice a month, the morning session, or the afternoon session to offer assistance to those students not feeling well. If you are interested in volunteering , please contact Kally Harris in the Main Office. [email protected]

Attention Student Athletes Student athletes who want to be eligible to play a sport in college need to make sure courses they are requesting are approved by NCAA. The website to review NCAA requirements, register with NCAA, and to check the list of approved classes at Athens is: ncaaeligibilitycenter.org Juniors and seniors will be required by NCAA to submit a transcript at the end of the year. Please have your student com-plete a request through Parch-ment on line.

The Troy Schools Food Service Department, which is contracted by the So-dexo Corporation, is gearing up to expand our Food Service Staff by seeking friendly people willing to fill various vacancies that are responsible for provid-ing lunches to the students of the Troy School District. Not to worry if you haven’t had previous experience, as “on the job” training will be provided!

Depending on the school, the hours would primarily be during the middle of the day and would range from 3 to 4 hours a day. And you would be earning some extra money while your students are in school! We are especially seek-ing elementary cooks, which does have more hours. So, come join our team by calling 248-823-5089, or email Nicole Gervais at [email protected], or come into the office at the Service Center, 4420 Livernois, Troy 48098 for an application. I look forward to hearing from you!

Congratulations! Athens TV wrapped their awards season at the NATAS Michigan Student Production Awards in Ann Arbor. This is the same group that presents the Emmy Awards. Because they are judged by industry profession-als and winners go on to compete at the national level, this is considered to be the biggest of the three competitions.

Recently, they attended the DAFT Michigan Student Film Festival at the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA. DAFT is run by media teachers and professionals. This year’s was the 50th festival, making it the longest running student film festival in the country. DAFT gives out awards at three levels: Merit, Honor, and Excellence. Entries are chosen from the Excellence winners to be presented at the festival. These entries are considered Best Of Show.

They also recently attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association Awards in Lansing. MIPA is run by the MSU School of Journalism and awards 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as well as Honorable Mention.

Additionally, several videos were submitted to other film festivals and competitions. Many of these are yet to be judged and will be competing into 2019.

A few important Mosts…

-This is the highest number of students Athens has ever had receive awards.

- For the NATAS Michigan Student Production Awards, the 9 wins and 11 nominations for Athens TV are the most by any program ever.

-The 5 wins and 7 nominations at NATAS for Rachel Goodman are both the most for any student ever.

Athens High School Class of 2018

Senior FinesPlease have your student clear their fines as soon as possible. Any unre-solved fines will result in your student not receiving a cap and gown or, ulti-mately, a diploma.

Also, please remind your student to re-turn all athletic equipment, gym locks or any other school property at the end of the semester. Prior and proper dis-position of all school property will make the graduation process much smooth-er.

Any returns or payment of fines should be directed to Mrs. Sparbeck in the Counseling Office. Please direct questions regarding fines to the issu-ing teacher. If your student has library fines, please contact Mrs. Vought in the Media Center [email protected]

Senior SpeechesTraditionally, two seniors speak at Hon-ors Convocation (students must have a 4.0 GPA or above) and two speakers at Commencent (students must have a 3.0 or higher GPA). We hope to in-crease the number of students speak-ing at Commencent by offering intro-ductory speeches.

To audition for these speeches, you must complete and submit a Commen-cent/Honors Speaking Form, which will be available March 14th in the AP Of-fice. The form indicates that you meet the GPA requirement, reminds you that commencement speakers sit on stage, and asks you to indicate which speech (one or all three) you hope to give. This form is due April 16th, wtih a copy of your speech/speeches to Mr. Turner.

Auditions are April 24th at 2:30 p.m. in Room 133. A staff panel selects speakers.

Senior Honors Convocation

Our annual Senior Honors Convo-cation will be held on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:00 pm in the Athens Auditorium. This dignified ceremony, recognizing our outstanding seniors, is always the highlight of our end of the year actitvities. Seniors with a 3.0 and above career GPA will be honored. In addition, many scholarships and de-partmental awards will be presented that evening. You will receive an invita-tion about 3 weeks prior to the ceremo-ny if your senior is being honored.

Seniors are in cap and gown for this ceremony along with proper attire un-der gowns.

Honors and Commencement AttireEveryone is encouraged to dress for the occasion for both the Honors Con-vocation and Commencement. Ath-ens students have become known for the pride they show in themselves and their school. Let’s continue this demonstration of pride. Because the gowns become wrinkled when boxed for delivery, graduates are urged to iron and hang the gown prior to wearing it. Pins, flowers, etc. should not be worn on the gown.

Commencement is a very important, digified ceremony. To insure the dig-nity of the ocassion for everyone, any student who is improperly dressed or who is under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substance will be removed from the lineup prior to the ceremony.

CommencementThe AHS graduation ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 11:00 am. Graduation is held at Oak-land University’s Athletic Center, O’re-na. Maps will be distributed at gradua-tion rehearsal. Tickets will be required to attend the ceremony. Each student will receive 6 tickets at graduation re-hearsal. Seating will be on a first come - first serve basis at the O’Rena. If ad-ditional tickets are needed, students will have to ask other students for un-used tickets or contact Mrs. Sutton at 248.823.2972.

All Night PartyTickets for the All Night Party will be available to purchase until June 4th. Fill out the ticket order form (available through the AHS Newsletter on the website) and return to the Main Of-fice with your check. They will also be sold after Commencement Rehearsal on June 5th. The cost is $70. ($85 at the door - cash only). This incredible, fun-filled evening is held on graduation night - June 9th.

If you have any questions about any information in this bulletin, please contact Mr. Bill Turner, Assistant Principal, 248.823.2932 [email protected]

Graduation Rehearsal The graduation process begins with a mandatory rehearsal for all those participating in the graduation cere-mony at 9:00 am on Tuesday, June 5th in the Main Gym. Attendance is mandatory for those participating in the ceremonies. Therefore, seniors should not schedule work or other ac-tivities for that day.

Cap & Gown DistributionCap and gown distribution will begin after the rehearsal. Caps and gowns will be distributed to those students only who have no academic or finan-cial obligations and if your student has completed the Senior Exit Survey. Se-niors and their parents should check with Mrs. Sparbeck in the Counseling Office for fine obligations.

Athens Band Boosters News Winter Guard Teams Compete at State Finals The Winterguard program here at Ath-ens, has a very rich and deep tradition of excellence. The Alias program (high schoolers) has been competing for 28 consecutive years, and AKA (middle schoolers) has been for 24 years. After many years, Alias grew to the capac-ity and capability of supporting 2 high school groups, starting in the 2013 season.

On April 7th all three groups had amaz-ing performances and supported each other through cheering for them in the stands, giving them encouragement, and helping them on and off the floor. AKA competed in the Junior Regional A class and scored a 72.770 which earned them 2nd place and won Sil-ver! AA competes in the Scholastic AA class and scored an 69.240 and earned a 5thplace. Later in the day Alias SA competed in the Scholastic A class and earned a score of 78.645 putting them in 7th place. The next weekend SA traveled to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the WGI Worlds. They earned a 80.24 which is their highest score of the season. Thank you to all the staff, students, and parents who make this program great!!!!
