Dear Friends and Supporters of Equal Justice,

The Legal Aid Foundation started out this year with one goal in mind — to make up the ground lost last year as a result of the recession. Thanks to your commitment and generosity, we did that, and then some. The Legal Aid Foundation’s total revenue for the year was just shy of $1.4 million, $150,000 more than last year and $70,000 more than our all time high.

How did the Foundation do it when economic indicators continue to be so bleak? That question can be answered in one word — you! Despite the still-faltering economy, and indeed perhaps because of it, you met the challenge to make civil legal assistance available to more low-income Coloradans facing the inevitable legal problems that accompany prolonged unemployment and acute financial distress.

Support from law firms was stronger than ever, with 144 firms contributing, 77 of those at the leadership level of $350 per lawyer in the firm. Individual lawyers reached deeper into their pockets to give more generously, growing the Foundation’s new Leadership Society for donors of $1,000 or more. And we continued to add new individual and corporate donors, as a result of the efforts of committed general counsel, together with the energy and enthusiasm of the many young lawyers involved in the Foundation’s Associates Campaign. Amid the steady drumbeat of bad economic news, the good news is this — in Colorado, the legal community is more generous than ever.

As a direct result of that generosity, there are low-income individuals and families around the state who face a brighter future because they received the civil legal assistance they needed at a critical time in their lives — women and children who are finally free from abuse in their own homes, seniors who are no longer plagued by barriers to necessary health care, families who still have a roof over their heads and food on the table because lawyers were available to help them renegotiate loans or leases and/or navigate the complicated processes for obtaining food stamps and other public assistance.

It is said that “people who do things that count don’t usually stop to count them.” We hope you will at least pause for a moment, to reflect on the lives you have changed because of your generosity and commitment to equal access to justice, and to accept our most heartfelt thanks.

Your Generosity at WorkThe Legal Aid Foundation raises money for Colorado Legal Services, Colorado’s statewide civil legal aid program. Colorado Legal Services provides advice, brief service, and extended representation to the poor and elderly in our state who are in greatest economic and social need. Eligibility for services with few exceptions is limited to individuals and families who are living at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level threshold, which means an annual income at or below $13,538 for an individual and at or below $27,563 for a family of four.

Jose Vasquez is the Supervising Attorney with the Consumer Law Unit in the Denver office of Colorado Legal Services, where he specializes in consumer bankruptcy and homeownership defense. Before joining Colorado Legal Services, Jose was in private practice, where he also represented consumer debtors in bankruptcy, and prior to that, he served as staff attorney to a Chapter 13 bankruptcy trustee. He is a member of Colorado’s Council of Advisors on Consumer Credit, and is a frequent speaker on various housing and consumer rights topics. Jose received his bachelor’s degree from Miami University in 1988 and his law degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1991.

Family4,555 people including Kayla and her family received help with problems related to divorce, custody, child support, domestic abuse, parental rights, adoption and guardianship and other family matters.

Consumer/Finance2,532 people including Stan and Mary received help with problems related to bankruptcy, collections, contracts, access to credit, predatory lending, loans, unfair sales practices, utilities, and other consumer issues.

Housing1,980 people including Eva and her family received help with problems related to eviction, foreclosure, public housing, landlord/tenant, and other housing matters.

Income Maintenance1,004 people including Louise and her granddaughter received help with problems related to disability benefits, temporary income support, food stamps, and nutritional benefits.

Other Legal Advice and AssistanceAnother 798 individuals and families received help with problems related to access to health care, individual rights, juvenile issues, employment, education, and other civil matters.

Over the course of his long and distinguished legal career, Ben Aisenberg has been a leader on many fronts. He is a past president of the Denver Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. He has taught classes at DU Law School and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He has served as the state chairperson of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, and was a founding member of the Public Justice Foundation. And he has given generously to the Legal Aid Foundation. In addition to regular and significant gifts to our Operating Fund, back in 1999, four years before the Legal Aid Foundation had even established an Endowment Fund, Ben made a $10,000 endowed gift, establishing the Bennett S. Aisenberg Trust. This past year, Ben graciously agreed to roll the Trust into the Foundation’s regular Endowment Fund, helping us reach the $400,000 mark. The Foundation is grateful for Ben’s generosity and for his active commitment to equal justice.
