Travel Tips: Money and currency: The currency in Portugal is the Euro (€), the monetary unit of the European Union.
Banks are open from 8:30 AM to 3 PM on weekdays. Portugal has a national network of cash machines (ATMs) identified by the symbol MB (Multibanco), from which you can withdraw cash 24 hours a day. Recognized international credit cards are commonly accepted by businesses in Portugal.
Retail establishments usually display logos of the cards they accept. When making a payment with a credit card, expect to be asked to show your passport or photo ID. Tipping is not mandatory. In all establishments, service is included with the price of the meal or drink. However, tipping is still a common practice at bars and restaurants, and in hotels and taxis, depending on the total price and the generosity of the client. It is usually around five to ten percent of the total price.
Health care and safety:
The national number for emergencies is 112. It can
be dialed at any time of the day or night from
anywhere. Although you will be treated in case of
emergency, you will need to pay for medical
attention, so you are advised to purchase health
insurance.
Languages and religion:
Portuguese is the official language in the entire
Portuguese territory. Freedom of religion is a
constitutional right. Although the majority of the
population is Catholic, other religions are also
practiced, all of which have their own places of
worship.
