Editorial

It has been a busy start to the year and there doesn't seem to be any sign of things slowing down. As you

would have noticed there are plenty of courses planned and we would love to hear about any courses you

would like to see in the future. At this stage we are lucky to have been able to supplement some of the more

expensive courses so local people can get a taste of what is to come.

Please see our printing prices on page 8 and note any print runs over 50 pages should be booked in advance

or at the very least a phone call to let us know you are coming in, would be greatly appreciated. We are at

times a busy centre and it is not always practical for staff to stop a task to run a large print, however with

notice we can accommodate in most situations if not all.

As most locals will be aware the CRC has a Centrelink Access point, however the CRC staff are not Centrelink

staff. For people travelling through the area this sometimes creates confusion. Please be aware the CRC

offers a self service Centrelink area only. CRC staff are NOT able to process forms or claims or access personal

or confidential information. Additionally, there has been several issues lately of inappropriate and

confrontational behaviour directed towards CRC staff by Centrelink clients. Fortunately, the majority of

Centrelink clients who use the access point are pleasant and treat CRC staff appropriately. For clients who’s

behaviour is deemed inappropriate, offensive , confrontational or aggressive they will be asked to leave the

premises, may be banned from the CRC or the police may be called. Any persons accessing the CRC should

be mindful of their behaviour.

We are currently looking for a trainee to complete a 12 month traineeship to gain a Certificate three in

Business. If you or anyone you know may be interested please see the advert on page 11. Send your CV or

Resume to [email protected]

The CRC would like to invite community members to express their views in our ‘letters to the editor’ section.

We will not print articles letters or advertisements which appear to be defamatory, accusatory or offensive

letters or letters which favour one side in a legal dispute. Editor reserves the right not to print a letter and

has the final say in all instances. It should also be noted that any letters printed in this section do not

necessarily represent the views of the CRC, the Shire of Kulin or its staff. If you have any questions about this

are please feel free to contact the manager of the CRC.

Letter to the Editor

Business Promotions for Kulin

I was pleased to see in the Update that we will have another meeting organised by the Small Business Centre,

Eastern Wheatbelt and the Wheatbelt Business Network to promote businesses in Kulin Soon.

At the Bendigo Bank AGM I said that with the developments that have taken place in the town recently we

should be advertising it as a good place to do business. Since then I have noticed that Hyden have had a meeting

with consultant John Stanley who advocated that they do just that using the CRC as well as perhaps the CDA as a

base for operating, which would be a good idea.

A slogan like “KULIN—a good place to live, work and do business”, repeated as much as possible in our

communications may be what is needed. Big business do it , and if it works for them it should work for us. They

don't do it for no reason.

Hitler was an exponent of repeat advertising. He said “if you say something often enough people will believe it”.

Last week, a group of future Camp Kulin Camp Counsellors took part in the Wheatbelt Leaders/Staff Training pro-

gram. From Monday until Friday they took part in numerous challenges and training sessions. Thanks to ANZ

Seeds of Renewal via the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, the Rotary Club of Kwinana and Kulin IGA

for making the program possible! Here is Declan’s story about his week at Camp Kulin.

If I had to sum up my week at camp in one word, it would be difficult to pick just one. It was not only a fun, entertain

ing and enthusiastic week but it was also an enlightening experience and it helped me to realise that I really do want

to become a mentor for Camp Kulin.

Being away for a week, I was able to meet many new people who were all special and individual in their own way,

and I was also able to experience a number of group challenges that not only made us think, but made us work as a

team. It was through these various group challenges that everybody was able to come out of their shells and work

together, which really brought out everybody’s own natural talents.

One of the main reasons the camp was so enjoyable was because of the people that I was there with. It was so easy

to get along with everyone, as everyone made you feel at home, and everyone was always laughing or having fun

which made it feel like a real family. The other thing that made my time with the other counsellors so special was the

fact that no two were the same, and no matter where I went something different would be happening. Everyone had

a different personality or a different background and despite this, we were all able to get along very easily and make

great friendships.

Being away at Camp Kulin and learning to be a camp counsellor was a great experience and I recommend it to any

one who is open to new experiences and meeting new people. Not only is the camp enjoyable to anybody willing to

participate, it also teaches many skills which can be used

in the future. These skills, such as leadership, teamwork

and communication are extremely useful skills, and can

be used in any situation, not only during the camp week,

but also when you are home.

In all, Camp Kulin is a great week and you will be sur

prised by how much you enjoy it. You can meet new

people, learn new skills and most of all it does have the

ability to change you for a lifetime.
