A large metropolitan transportation system needed to issue in several languages materials from a public information campaign originally launched in English only. This type of project presents more diculty than when the publications are planned in multiple languages from the beginning.

Once the translated copy is nalized, the new documents need to be published all over again. While it may seem that the task is simplied by the fact that the layout has already been designed and produced, the existing layout poses constraints on the new, expanded text which require the creation of new design elements that appear consistent with the originals and still manage to contain a larger amount of content. This in essence starts the publishing process all over again, introduc-ing limitations that were not there before.

In order to t all the new copy, multiple and subtle typographi-cal corrections need to be applied. In addition, most of the graphic elements may require slight adjustments. The banners and headlines present the largest discrepancies and require additional attention.
