Fertigation

Environmental Benefits

EZ-FLO’s patented proportioning systems deliver nutrients in minute amounts that can be within the US EPA’s standards for clean drinking water as well as increasingly restrictive state and local standards. By applying nutrients and other beneficial products in small “micro-doses” these products are applied at low parts per million (ppm) concentrations, guaranteeing up to 100% absorption by the plant material.

Water Savings

The function of a plant's roots are to provide the plant with water and nutrition. Increasing the root mass increases the root surface area in the soil which increases the plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

Water savings result from the development of increased root mass due to micro-dosing. When you use EZ-FLO, you should expect to have water savings of 20-50% if you are watering adequately. Once the root mass has developed sufficiently as shown in the photo below, the ability of the root mass to “trap and hold” water (and nutrients) in the root zone increases dramatically.

Fertilizer Reduction

The EZ-FLO “micro-dose” proportioning system makes nutrients more readily available to the plant every time water is applied. Because the fortified water stream contains small amounts of various fertilizer macro-nutrients (NPK) and micronutrients, the plant is constantly fed a rich solution of food and minerals that it needs to grow and thrive. Studies have shown that only 10% of uncoated granular fertilizer applied is ultimately absorbed (much of it leaching past the root zone) while EZ-FLO fertigation can achieve between a 90% to 100% absorption rate. In comparison, as little as ½ pound of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet is required as compared to 5 pounds of granular.

Fertilizer runoff causes enormous problems downstream by degrading our waterways, lakes and bays. According to a recent newspaper article, “when lawns get more nitrogen than they can absorb, excess nitrogen migrates into the watershed, stimulating algae growth in local ponds and bays that suffocates fish and aquatic life.”

There has been an explosion of high efficiency (HE) irrigation products hit the market in the last few years. HE products use significantly less water than traditional rotors and spray heads and can be grouped into the following product categories:

These systems utilize the same easy to use, precision metering technology as standard capacity EZ-FLO systems. High Capacity systems provide significantly greater fertilizer capacity than other injectors because EZ-FLO can use full concentrates.

The Organic and Natural Advantage

Using EZ-FLO to add organic materials to soil greatly improves soil fertility while it counteracts the negative affect chemical fertilizers have had on soil fertility. Organic fertilizers and bio-stimulants are products that contain carbon humates and other soil enriching materials. The EZ-FLO Authorized Installer Training Program

EZ-FLO offers irrigation and landscape contractors an opportunity to become part of our Authorized Installer (AI) Group.

The AI Group is a special group of installers that have taken a factory-designed and approved course and can demonstrate mastery of the concepts and information presented in the Authorized Installer course.

AI members demonstrate their mastery of the information by passing a test at the end of the course to determine that they understand how to properly use EZ-FLO products and fertilizers, how systems are sized to a property, integrated into an irrigation system, and how they are properly installed and maintained. Once an installer has passed the AI test, they will become an Authorized Installer and will be listed in special section on EZ-FLO’s website. Classes are conveniently web based.

InstallationTypical Installation

The most common EZ-FLO installation is done by gluing an EZ-FLO coupling into the irrigation main line after an approved backflow device. The system is then connected to the coupling using the supplied 1/4” flexible tubing. The EZ-FLO system can be installed in a valve box in a standard valve box or under an artificial rock for added safety and security as well as protection from the elements.

Commercial Installations

An EZ-FLO ball valve connection (CBV) is required for installation of EZ005-FX (5 gallon capacity) and larger systems or for flow conditions below 120 GPH. The CBV provides the ability to adjust the differential pressure between the water in and fertilizer out connections which is beneficial when using heavy products such as organic supplements or when faster injection rates are required.

An optional EZ-FLO Saddle Venturi Fitting connection may be used in line sizes 4” and larger where CBV installations are not practical. It is installed by drilling two holes in the irrigation main line and bolting a pipe saddle with a customized EZ-FLO Saddle Venturi Fitting inserted into the line. This connection eliminates cutting the line and installing an EZ-FLO Ball Valve Coupling. These installations should be reviewed by EZ-FLO engineering prior to installation to ensure piping system compatibility, flow dynamics and the proper placement of the connection.

Prior to the development of EZ-FLO’s technology, fertigation equipment was complex, expensive and required larger storage tanks to handle diluted products. EZ-FLO’s technology changes that by making fertigation simple, inexpensive and inconspicuous. With an EZ-FLO system you simply fill the tank with concentrated products, set the feed dial and the rest is automatic. The following time lapse photos of a clear EZ-FLO system in operation demonstrate how the technology works. EZ-FLO’s patented, fluid flow technology creates separation of fertilizer and water which prevents dilution with the unique ability to consistently meter all elements of the fertilizer mix, from start to finish. This system connects directly to the irrigation piping after the back flow prevention device and the tank is designed for use under constant pressure. EZ-FLO’s patented flow process automatically adjusts to changes in water pressure and water flow without changing fittings. This product is designed to feed both sprinkler and drip irrigation zones for commercial, municipal, sports field, golf course, grower and residential applications. This system is designed for the delivery of products that are designated as non-hazardous.

A code compliant back flow prevention device is required for installation. Installation must follow local and state plumbing codes. Unless otherwise specified, a pressure vacuum breaker is the minimum back flow prevention device required according to University of Southern California - Foundation for Cross Connection Control and Hydraulic Research.

Slip coupling connectors are available in sizes from 3/4” to 2” with socket x socket connections. They are PVC schedule 40 with 1/4” nylon barbed tubing connectors. They are used to connect the EZ-FLO system to the irrigation flow line with the 1/4” flexible tubing provided with the EZ-FLO system. These connectors are principally used in new installations or in retrofits where there is adequate room to flex the irrigation pipe. Not recommended for EZ005 and larger models or when flow rates are below 2 gallons per minute. Larger sizes available upon request.

EZ Ball Valve Coupling ConnectorBall valve coupling (CBV) connectors are available in sizes 3/4” through 4” with socket x socket connections. They are PVC schedule 40 with 1/4” nylon barbed tubing connectors. They are used to connect the EZ-FLO system to the irrigation flow line with the 1/4” flexible tubing provided with the EZ-FLO system when the elevation of zone valves downstream from the EZ-FLO System installation point are 10 feet or more above the installation point or when flow rates are below 2 gallons per minute. They provide the ability to adjust the differential pressure between the inlet and outlet connection to the irrigation system flow line. CBV’s are REQUIRED for EZ005-FX, EZ010-FX and for all HC models unless an approved engineered connection has been specified.

EZ Retro Coupling Connector

Retro (fit) coupling connectors are available in sizes from 3/4” and 1” with socket x socket connections. They are PVC schedule 40 with 1/4” nylon barbed tubing connectors. They are used to retrofit the EZ-FLO system into an existing irrigation flow line where tight conditions prevent putting in an EZ-FLO Coupling Connector. EZ Threaded Coupling Connector

Threaded coupling connectors are available in sizes from 3/4” and 1” with FIPT (female iron pipe thread) connections. They are PVC schedule 40 with 1/4” nylon barbed tubing connectors. They are used to connect the EZ-FLO system to the irrigation flow line with the 1/4” flexible tubing provided with the EZ-FLO system. They can be used to adapt to polyethylene or metal piping systems. Also available in BSPT for export customers.

EZ Engineered Connections

We can assist in developing custom connections for larger piping configurations or for use with metal irrigation piping (ductile iron, steel or copper). These custom connections may involve the use of saddles, taps and welded outlets and will require consultation in order to establish the flow parameters that may be realized. Since each connection is specific to that particular piping system, the flow rates for the EZ-FLO systems connected in this fashion will vary from the published standards.


EZ Saddle Venturi Fitting

The Saddle Venturi Fitting (SVF) connection may be used in line sizes 4” and larger where CBV installations are not practical. It is installed by drilling two 1-1/4” holes in the irrigation main line and bolting a pipe saddle with a customized EZ-FLO Saddle Venturi Fitting inserted into the line. EZ-FLO recommends installing the Saddle Venturi Fittings with a valve in the line in between the inlet and outlet saddle venturi connections if possible. This allows for higher injection rates if they are needed for the application. These installations must be reviewed by EZ-FLO engineering prior to installation to ensure piping system compatibility, flow dynamics and the proper placement of the connection in the irrigation line. The SVF connection is typically installed into a pipe saddle with a 3/4” female iron pipe thread (FIPT) outlet. Other sizes are available upon request. Specify the type of pipe and the size of the pipe that the SVF is being installed into when ordering.

Main Line Systems

All EZ-FLO systems connected to an irrigation system require an authorized EZ-FLO connector, installation kit or authorized engineered connection to ensure proper operation. Any version of the following coupling connectors are the minimum recommended for most installations of EZ001 and EZ003 dispensers. Threaded coupling connectors are designed to adapt to poly and copper connections. Retrofit coupling connectors are designed for easy attachment to existing irrigation piping or where space is tight. These coupling connectors are not for flow conditions below 2 gallons per minute, sloped landscapes or when dispensing organic bio-stimulants.

Ball Valve Couplings are REQUIRED for flow conditions below 2 gallon per minute,sloped landscapes or when dispensing heavier organic products.

Ball Valve Couplings (CBV) or an approved engineered connection are REQUIRED for EZ005 and EZ010 and for all EZ High Capacity (HC) systems. CBV connections allow users to adjust water flow to create sufficient differential line pressure to ensure that the unit will properly flow in the irrigation system.

Adjust variable pressure ball valve as needed for desired flow rates.

Poly (Light-Wall )Tank - Must be Depressurized When Not In Use.

Hose and Drip Systems connect at the hose bib or directly to a 1/2’’ or larger drip line so the tank is only under pressure when the system is in use. Feeds through all types of garden hose sprayers, sprinklers or drip equipment. Adjustable feed ratio from 1,000:1 (slow) to 100:1 (fast). Maximum operating tank pressure-80 PSI. These units come with a one (1) year Manufacturer’s limited warranty (www.ezflofertilizing.com/warranty.asp).

This product is suitable for sprinkler, drip, sub-surface and garden hose applications and is ideal for residential landscapes, gardens or small growers.

The Hose Bib & Drip unit can be attached to an in-ground irrigation line as long as it is installed after the zone valve so that it will not be under pressure when not in use. This can be done either with the purchase of a Drill and Thread Conversion Kit if the irrigation flow line is ½”. An EZ-FLO Ball Valve Coupling is required for installations above ½”or extremely low flow conditions in irrigation line installations.

Optional Shut-off valves that easily connect/disconnect are available to speed the refill of Hose and Drip systems.

Back Flow Prevention Required - Vacuum breaker for hose bib(Part#3050) or pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) for permanent attachment to the irrigation system.

Fill Accessories

To assist in refilling EZ-FLO dispensing units, EZ-FLO offers two funnel types that are designed for maximum efficiency and durability.

EZ-FNLSC This is a wide-mouth (4.75” diameter hopper), heavy duty fill funnel that fits snugly in any EZ-FLO main-line or hose and drip system fill port without tipping. It is versatile, compact and has a long service life.

EZ-FNLHC This is a larger removable fill funnel (17” diameter hopper) and an integrated water flushing system that can handle 25 lb. bags of water soluble fertilizer in a single pour. The integrated water flushing system connects to a shut-off valve and greatly speeds the refill of high capacity (HC) units. This portable funnel fill system is easily removed and can be used to efficiently fill multiple high capacity units.
