Bollywood is not a genre of film—it is the Hindi* film industry. Its name is a combination of two words: Bombay (the original name for Mumbai, the largest city in India with a population 20-million plus) and Hollywood. Mumbai is the hub for Hindi film production.

Indians buy the highest number of film tickets in the world, but average prices are among the lowest, and revenues are a fraction of Hollywood films. That being said, there is a dedication to the industry. For example, blockbuster film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The Brave-Hearted Will Take the Bride) ran a record-breaking 1,009-week run at a cinema in Mumbai. In Hollywood the average film runs for four weeks. Here are some other comparisons:

Bollywood Hollywood (Information from IndiaMarks.com)Films Produced Annually 1,000+ 700+Tickets Sold 3.6 billion 2.6 billionWorldwide Revenue $1.3 billion $51 billionAnnual Growth Rate 12.6% 5.6%Avg. Production Cost/Film $1.5 million $47.7 millionAvg. Marketing Cost/Film $500,000 $27.3 millionNumber of Screens 13,000 40,000

What makes up a Bollywood Film: 1. Spectacular Song-and-Dance Routines—Filmmakers use music and dance to spice up

their stories to make them unforgettable.2. Over the top Melodrama—Generally, everything is exuberant: costumes, makeup, jewelry,

woman impeccably dressed in traditional saris. Subtlety is non-existent. But there has been a shift in the last 15 years from this.

3. Storylines of Love—The scenarios change, but films will almost always revolve around a storyline of love, such as a couple from different classes falling in love or in a love triangle. The film almost always ends with love defying the odds.

4. Length—3+ hours. Many films will have ‘intermissions’ halfway through the movie. The value of a longer film lies in the opportunity for stronger development of characters, allowing for more emotional investment in the story line.

Bollywood was born 11 years before Hollywood with a short film in 1899. Its first full-length film was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke’s black-and-white silent film Raja Harischandra on May 3, 1913. Phalke made 95 full-length films, yet died in poverty. In those films it was the stars, rather than plots, that propelled and created the buzz. Beginning in 1936 the first major star pair was Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani. The Indian public developed an insatiable appetite for news about their screen heroes, much like Americans follow their favorite Hollywood stars.

Film historian Nasreen Rehman shared that the basic form of the film song is derived from various regional song types, and hasn’t changed much since the 1930s. Both song and dance are used to enhance the mood for love and drive the narrative. “You could compare it with opera, but whereas opera is all song, Indian films have between five to nine songs,” she says. In recent decades, Bollywood dance choreography has become more sophisticated. Before the 1980s, Bollywood stars danced around trees at moments when love was declared. Rehman shared that the simple answer to this formula endured because they were not good dancers. But now all heroes and heroines dance.

We hope you enjoy this performance and are able to either reconnect with your favorite Bollywood scenes, or find your new passion for Hindi cinema.

~ Janey Sarther, MAC Education and Community Engagement Coordinator

*Hindi refers to the official language of India and also spoken in other South Asian countries. It does not refer to Hindu, a person who is a follower of Hinduism.

HEENA PATEL (Executive Producer, Artistic Director) is originally from Toronto and now splits her time between New York and India.

Patel grew up learning and

performing Indian folk dances and Bollywood dance, before becoming a choreographer and founder of several award-winning Indian dance teams and organizations. After moving to India, she trained in Indian classical music before becoming an arts professional, assuming the roles of artist manager and agent.

Today, Patel is a cultural strategist and performing arts specialist for South Asian arts—curating, creating, and supporting South Asian performing arts and artists through her company MELA Arts Connect. Bollywood movies, music and dancing play a central role in some of Patel’s fondest memories. Bollywood Boulevard is a way for her to share her love for all things “filmi” with others. For more information on MELA, visit melaartsconnect.com.

RUSHI VAKIL (Executive Producer, Music Director, Composer) is from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, and he is the founder of Aaditaal Music Project.

For more than a decade, he has

been professionally composing and producing original music for live shows, theater, animated films, feature films, ad films and dance. His latest film credits include the hit

Indian regional movie Shubharamabh, India’s biggest animation movie Kid Krrish, and the award-winning short film Bhinti Maage.

As a performing and teaching artist, he travels the world with tabla ensemble Talavya and his world music band Taan. Committed to cultivating the next generation of musicians in India, he heads Rhythm Riders Music Institute, where he has been training students for more than 15 years. He has also taught percussion and Indian music masterclasses at numerous universities. For more information on Rushi Vakil, visit rushivakil.com.

ROHIT GIJARE (Choreographer, Dancer) is a New York-based choreographer and dancer and creative director of Exodus Artistry. Dancing from a young age, he has performed on a variety of

globally recognized platforms, spanning the United States and abroad. He recently choreographed an NBA half-time show, was co-choreographer for Star TV Plus’ Just Dance Live, assistant choreographer for Nakul Dev Mahajan for So You Think You Can Dance, and both a choreographer and dancer in the Bollywood show Mystic India: The World Tour.

Highlights as a dancer include being 2nd Runner Up for Dance India Dance North America, opening for Carrie Underwood, and performing at the International Indian Film Academy Awards. Having grown up surrounded by all things Bollywood, Gijare believes that Bollywood Boulevard is a way for him to pay homage to the dancing stars that inspired him to pursue a career in dance. For more information on Gijare, visit rohitgijare.com.

The Friends of the MAC is a family of people who have decided that a world-class performing and visual arts center should reside in their community. Ticket sales only provide 42 percent of our $3 million operating budget. It is through the support of College of DuPage and through the generous gifts from patrons and local businesses that we can keep art in our gallery and on our stages.

Your gift to the MAC • Brings nationally and internationally renowned artists to our community • Supports our SchoolStage program that annually offers affordable arts experiences to thousands of school children • Provides students and community members the opportunity to interact with artists • Enhances the quality of life in our community

Without the generous support of the Friends of the MAC we would not be the cultural hub of DuPage County. We gratefully thank our friends and we invite others to join them.

For complete details, visit the MAC Ticket Office or call the MAC at (630) 942-2263 or the College of DuPage Foundation at (630) 942-2466.
