` Crime and Punishment is one of the greatest novels of

Dostoevsky. The major theme of the novel expresses the

Christian principal that one can get freedom from sin or evil

only through suffering. Thus Raskolnikov is very proud &

naughty at the binging. But he learns humility & compassion,

Through suffering & love of Sonya.

This novel is presented very powerfully & with

    Social Problems

Dostoevsky was a novelist who wrote

with social consciousness. His life-sketch shows that he was a

champion of humanism democracy and freedom. This is the

first Great Russian novel dealing with the social life in the

great city of Petersburg. The novel presents a very horrible ,

dark and depressing pictures a very horrible, dark and

depressing picture of the social atmosphere of Petersburg

    during the period of 1860.

The novel gives us a picture of the various

    social problems such as `drunkenness, `poverty, `

prostitution ,unemployment and the dying out of the

families of the civil servants . In fact the novelist had already

discussed the problems in his own journal `Vermya (Time)

during 1865. He handled them in his novel with sympathy as

    well as understanding.

    The Problem of Prostitution

Sonyas tragic life represents the problem of

prostitution that spread in society on account of poverty. An

elderly man tried to follow and seduce the girls attempted to

commit suicide in the canal. These are the examples of

women who were forced to suffer from the life of

    prostitution, hunger and poverty.

Raskolnikovs aim in murdering the old pawn-

broker was to get money in order to help his family. His sister

Duny ahead to accept Luzhins proposal of marriage because

Luzhin was a rich businessman who could help Raskonikov to

    complete his education.

The Problems of Greed For Money

We find that the novel throws night on the

problems of greed for money. Alena Ivonovna , Luzhin,

Svidrigaylv were the people who wanted to get moneyquickly. The business of money lending was the source of

quick money. At that time, the capital city of Petersburg was

going through a financial crisis. Alena Ivanovna, the pawn-

broker exploits her customers and collects a lot of money

which remains useless. Luzhin and Svidrigoylov also try to

purchase beauty with the help of their money. In this way, a

new class of exploiters has risen in society.

    The Life of Petersburg

The life shown in the city of st. Petersburg is

rotten. It is full of poverty, drunkness, prostitution, murder

and suicide. Raskolnikov and Swiderigailov suffer from`alienation and psychological disorder. Raskolnikov becomes

confused in thoughts and over excited in mind . He suffers

from double personality. Svidrigaylov is tired of sexual

passion though he runs after many women. Finally, he finds

himself lonely and dissatisfied with life. There is no person

who loves him sincerely. Therefore he commits suicide.

Selfishness, Cruelty, Coruption, madness etc. have

become the part and parcel of Russian society. The city it self

is full of dirty atmosphere. Raskolnikov complains that

instead of gardens and fountains, there were dirt and

stench and all sorts of filth in the city. Everything is shabby

and sordid. The room and streets are suffocating. The strench

(bad smell) from a number of saloons, the wandering

drunkards add to the disgusting and melancholy atmosphereof the big city.

    Conclusion

All these social evils find a place in ` Crime and

Punishment. They form the social background of the crime

committed by Raskolnikov. Dostoevsky has succeeded ingiving his ` Social Criticism of the contemporary Russian life
