A HUMAN SAINT:
JOHN HENRY NEWMAN (1801-90)
FRIENDS OF THE VEECH LIBRARY PRESENT
With Dr Robert M. Andrews
John Henry Newman's (1801-90) canonisation on 13 October 2019 represents a culmination
in the Catholic Church's gradual recognition of Newman's contributions to Catholicism
since the nineteenth century. A member of the Church of England for half of his life,
Newman's conversion in 1845 began his membership of the Church of Rome. Since then,
the Church has absorbed Newman's various intellectual contributions in a variety of ways
- a testament to his wide influence. But who was Newman - a man whose quintessential
Victorian Englishness was matched by his Catholicity? Soon to be a saint, Newman was
also a man affected by his time, his place and his growth in sanctity. In his youth he
regarded the pope as the Antichrist, yet ended his days believing him to be the Vicar of
Christ. His mixed reception by both Catholics and Anglicans was similarly reflected by
their own complex histories and contexts. It is only since his death and the passing of time
that the Church has appreciated the richness of Newman's life achievement. This talk to
the Friends of the Veech Library will discuss Newman's life and thought with these
considerations in mind.
