SEEKING THE PROMISED LAND
A Pilgrimage to Jordan & The Holy Land
With the Venerable Andie Brown
12 - 21 October 2015
(with an optional extension to Jordan, 21 - 24 October 2015)
Join us on this exciting journey to the Holy Lands of Palestine and Israel - with the opportunity to extend your
stay to visit Jordan. We begin our pilgrimage in Jerusalem before heading north to the Sea of Galilee. We
journey via the region of Nablus (biblical Shechem). We then offer an optional opportunity to spend time in
Jordan, where the countryside is so reminiscent of Biblical times. On our journey we plan to meet with the
local Christian community and offer them our support and encouragement.
Highlights will include Jerusalem, Nazareth, Capernaum and the Sea of Galilee. We will also visit Bethlehem
and pass through the West Bank and Nablus: parts of the emerging Palestine. In Jordan, the highlight is the
rose-red city of Petra but we will also see Roman theatres and temples. On our pilgrimage, we will walk
along the Via Dolorosa, sail on the Sea of Galilee, float on the Dead Sea and visit a source of the River Jordan
at Banias the Jordan river. The Holy Land is unique in offering so many highlights and contrasts in such a
compact area. Each day of our pilgrimage will be very different from the last.
We will travel with optimism and enthusiasm as we participate in a new era
of Holy Land pilgrimage and re-discover the joy and enrichment of being a pilgrim

the Pool of Siloam and Warren’s Shaft. We then enter the Old City
through Zion Gate and walk through part of the Jewish Quarter
along to the Western Wall (where we also see the Bar-Mitzvah
ceremonies) stopping for a wonderful view of Temple Mount with
the El Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. We finish our
morning by the Pool of Bethesda and the Church of St Anne. After
lunch at the Ecce Homo convent (above the Lithostrotos) we follow
the Via Dolorosa through the lanes of the Old City to the Church of
the Holy Sepulchre. We end the afternoon at the Garden Tomb.
Thursday BETHLEHEM
We cross into Palestinian territory to visit Bethlehem, visiting
Manger Square to call at the Basilica and Grotto of the Nativity and
St Jerome’s Caves. We continue to the Shepherds’ Fields. We lunch
at the Shepherds Tent. We also have the opportunity to do some
shopping and then return to Jerusalem via the village of Abu Guosh
(a possible site of Emmaus) where we call at the Crusader church
and Benedictine monastery.
Saturday TRANSFER TO THE GALILEE
We drive north through the West Bank to Nablus. Here we
visit the site of Sebastiye and have lunch at the Samaria
Restaurant. In the afternoon we visit the site of Jacob’s Well.
We then continue to the Galilee and Tiberias. Our last stop of
the day is at the Kibbutz Degania Bet. Four night stay at the
Ron Beach Hotel by the Sea of Galilee with visits to places
associated with Jesus' early life and ministry.
Sunday THE NORTHERN GALILEE Leaving Tiberias, we drive first to the hilltop town of Safed. We
then continue to the Biblical site of Banias (Caesarea Philippi) where
we have time for a pleasant walk through the reserve and for
meditation and reflection. We also celebrate Holy Communion
together here. We then enjoy a leisurely lunch at Kibbutz Hagoshrim
and return south over the Golan Heights (including Mount Bental)
back to the Sea of Galilee and Tiberias.
Monday NAZARETH
We drive to Mount Tabor, navigating its winding road by taxis to
reach the beautiful Basilica of the Transfiguration with its magnificent
views over the plain of Armageddon. We drive to nearby Nazareth
where we visit Nazareth Village, a reconstruction of 1st Century
Galilean life. After a Biblical style lunch there, we walk from
Gabriel’s Church (Mary’s Well), via the Synagogue Church to the
Basilica of the Annunciation. We return to Tiberias via Cana, scene
of Jesus first miracle.
Tuesday THE LAKESIDE MINISTRY

resurrection), we drive up to the Convent of Beatitudes’ church and

EXTENSION IN JORDAN
Wednesday TRAVEL TO JORDAN
We leave Tiberias and drive to the Sheikh Hussein border crossing
to cross into Jordan. We continue to the spectacular Roman site of
Jerash, the best preserved of all the Decapolis cities. We tour the
ruins of the site including the oval forum, the colonnaded street and
the theatre. Lunch is at the Lebanese House Restaurant. In the
afternoon, we visit Bethany beyond the Jordan, a wonderfully
evocative site on the banks of the River Jordan (Holy Communion)
and the site where John baptised Jesus. We then drive to the Dead
Sea and have an overnight stay in the Jordan Valley Marriott Hotel.
Thursday BAPTISMAL SITE AND DEAD SEA
We drive first to visit Mount Nebo the mountain where Moses
viewed the Promised Land. We then continue to Madaba where we
view the ‘Madaba map’ mosaic of the Middle East on the floor of the
Church of St George. We lunch in Madaba at the Haret Jdudnajh
restaurant. In the afternoon we continue to Petra via Kerak, where
we visit the Crusader castle. We call at ‘Ain Musa (Moses’ well) as
we enter Wadi Musa. Two night stay at the Petra Guest House.
Friday THE ROSE RED CITY OF PETRA
Petra’s fame is well
deserved and you will be
struck by the scale of the
site and the extraordinary
beauty of the rock-cut
tombs and temples. At the
time of Jesus, Petra was a
magnificent Nabatean city of
enormous wealth, which
controlled much of the
trade that passed through the region. We enter Petra through the
Siq on foot and then suddenly stand before the rock-cut Treasury,
hewn out of the red sandstone. We spend the entire day here and
visit many of the breathtaking monuments, including some of the
Royal Tombs. We lunch in the Basin Restaurant, within the site of
Petra.
Saturday 24 October HOMEWARD BOUND
An early start as we drive to Queen Alia airport for our morning
return flight with British Airways from Amman to London
Heathrow. Flight BA 146 leaves at 11:20 and arrives into Heathrow
at 14:45.
Friday MASADA AND THE DEAD SEA
A free day in Jerusalem or join a full-day OPTIONAL excursion
to Masada and the Dead Sea. We drive into the Judean wilder-
ness to Herod's desert fortress of Masada, which we ascend by
cable car. We have an opportunity to float in the therapeutic
waters of the Dead Sea before lunch in the Lot Hotel. On our
return journey to Jerusalem we call at Qumran (where the Dead
Sea scrolls were discovered). The final part of our journey is to
Wadi Qelt, for a spectacular view of St George's desert monas-
tery. Cost £60 including lunch. We will book you on the excursion
unless you indicate otherwise on the booking form.
TRAVEL TO THE HOLY LAND
& JORDAN
When I work with the good folks at McCabes to plan a pilgrimage I do so in the hope that it will be
a significant encounter for all who join us. I pray that we may all enjoy some spiritual renewal by
walking where Jesus and nearly all the people of the Bible lived and walked. And I plan for some rest
and recreation, some holiday/holy-day, as well. We go to the Holy Land to experience at first hand
the sounds and sights, the tastes and scents and the very touch of the places already in some ways
known to us through the Bible and the TV - but when we breathe the same air and lift up our eyes
to the same hills, when we wet our feet in the Jordan or sail across Galilee, then we will see these
old, familiar stories in vibrant, new ways. Do come; walk with us, pray with us and grow in faith with us!

considerable backlogs at the passport offices. We will arrange a group visa on
your behalf in advance for Jordan. If you are holding a non-British passport, or
require further advice, please consult the McCabe office. No inoculations are
required. We, however, do advise you to consult your doctor regarding your
own personal requirements. We ask people to drink plenty of water to avoid

suitable meals can be requested on the flights and tour.

note it is a requirement that all insured persons must adhere to the Medical
Health Requirements section on page 5 of the Policy wording document
(which we will send you with your confirmation invoice). If you answer yes to
