Music videos in the present day are crucial in the music industry, they are used now to shape and define an artists image as well as to promote their music. Music videos today are very different to 30 or so years ago.

The history of modern music video began in the 1960’s, with the Beatles first motion picture “A Hard Days Night” which included musical segments that resemble today’s music videos. In the same year that the film was produced, the band begin making short ‘promotional films’ for their songs which were then aired on television. Soon other bands jumped on the bandwagon and it became usual to do so.

“MTV is responsible for a complete revolution in the music business.”

The Birth Of MTV

MTV was first aired in 1981, the first video ever played on it was, ironically, The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” The programme brought importance and public attention to music videos.

After the huge success of the videos, MTV rapidly expanded, giving the videos 24 hour broadcasting. Producers realised the marketing potential of them and their artists developed identities through the medium, particularly Madonna.
