From the Minister

A few years ago we refurbished the sanctuary of Liberton Kirk, and one of the new features I have grown to love are the curtains for the two big windows at the front. These curtains, gold in colour, are drawn for the 11am service so that the screens can be lowered for the projectors, and, on a sunny day, you can still see where the curtains join together from the bright chink of sunlight down the middle of each screen. It warms my heart every time I see this, because I often imagine that heaven is separated from earth by a curtain, and that there are occasions when the wind of the Spirit blows, moving the curtain so that a glimpse of God’s glory bursts through.

A couple of week-ends ago we seemed to be mourning the loss of a number of well known figures who passed away quickly in turn. It began with the death of Mel Smith, the comedian, and he was followed in quick succession by Cliff Morgan, the Welsh rugby star, David Frost, the reporter, and David Jacobs, the music presenter. There is no doubt that world is a poorer place without them, but their deaths got me think-ing about the names of some of the well known members of our church at Liberton, who we are also missing

– names from the past month, like Betty Laurie and Derek Pape. The world, and the

family of the church, is a poorer place without them too.

As well as fond memories, how-ever, they have left behind some-thing far more precious – hope. I often say, (usually at funerals), that the reason that I believe in heaven is because Jesus did, and that I think he knew what he was talking about. C.S Lewis suggests that glimpses of heaven are there for all to see . . .

Whenever we see true beauty there is an aching sensation of homesickness for something or somebody we have never had and never will have – the instinct for heaven. We live with it and it is our constant companion.

Jesus was also quite challenging when it came to who he would like to meet there. Listen to his words on the subject . . .

“Whoever acknowledges me be-fore others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 10.32-3)

Notice how he is not talking here about how good we’ve been, or even how pious or religious we are. Rather, what seems to matter to Jesus is simply whether or not we have been faithful to him.

Something else I often say at funerals is that, if we don’t believe in God, our service can only be about the past, whereas, if we do, it can be about the future as well.

Glimpses of heaven

4 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.596 Page 4 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.624

In the past few weeks we have had the privilege of being involved in a number of services at Liberton, which have been as much about the future as about the past.

So thank you to the friends we have lost. Your farewells have not only been celebrations of the life of the faithful, they have also been occasions when I have felt the wind

of the Spirit, and the glow from the chink in that curtain.

And, finally, here’s a question to leave with you (and me). How will our lives be celebrated, and will those occasions only be about the past, or will they be about the future too? with much love

Hi . . . . .

Hello all! Last month, you read about the newly-arriving Chil-dren's Worker, Rachel Willis, and I'm happy to report that my first few weeks in Scotland have been delightful and busy. I'm settling into the various aspects of Sunday clubs and other children's activities at Liberton Kirk, and also chaplain's visits to Gracemount Primary School. There is quite a bit to familiarise myself with, from uniform organisations to holiday clubs, but that is because there is such a wonderful spectrum of things happening in children's work in the community! And of course, it's been lovely to get to know people both at Liberton Kirk and other nearby churches. I can tell that everyone is working hard to ensure that our children have enjoyable, safe Christian activities in which to participate- and I'll work hard at that as well! Thank you for being so welcoming, and God bless you!

. . . . .

As another term starts at ICC I face entering my final year and having to start reflecting on what I am going to write my final year dissertation on. These past three years at Liberton Kirk have been eye opening. I have learnt so much from Andy and from the church family as a whole and I am excited to explore some ideas on what to write my final piece on. I know that Liberton Kirk's grounding has been so valuable in getting me through college and it is scary to think that this is my last year here as your Student Youth Worker. It has been incredible to see the young people of our church growing up and hearing about Jesus and I know this last year will be no different. I am excited for this final incredible year of working here with this family and I want to thank you for all the blessings you have poured out on me and will continue to pour out on me over this coming year.

. . . . .

After having started here at Liberton at the busiest time of the summer, with

Stage’n’Slam, Powis and Summer Buzz, I’ve had a great opportunity to get to know many of the young people. As college starts back I’m looking forward to getting my week sorted out, as I get involved in Liberton and Gracemount High School in my role there as a chaplain. I’ll begin work working with pupils who need a little extra support in grammar and essay writing- ideal work for a German girl!

. . . . .

I’m delighted at the way our new girls are fitting in. By now, many of you will have met Rachel and seen her at the front of church and at Sunday Buzz. She also came along with us on the History Tours we’ve been running with the three Primary 6 classes at Gracemount Primary School. She loved the rapport that children have with all 8 stations of the tour. She learnt the history of Major General Wauchoup from the stain glass window and she was impressed by the warmth and welcome shown by all our guides to the children. As always, the pupils represented themselves and their school in a fantastic light. They asked insightful questions and cared for the artefacts they were shown. They were polite and well-mannered throughout. No wonder our volunteers love this interactive, inter-generational project so much!

Cameron Toll Chaplaincy Sunday

27th October 2013

Cameron Toll Chaplaincy continues to flourish, supported by Newington Churches Together (NCT) and South East Edinburgh Churches Acting Together (SEECAT). Now in our eleventh year, amongst other activities, we have been

involved in the start-up of the latest Basics Bank as a three month pilot venture. Our two chaplains and are available in Cameron Toll every Tuesday

and Friday morning from 10am, until 12noon. They can be found outside Sainsbury’s from 10.30 until11am. On our special Sunday we would ask you to continue to pray for us.

Mission Aviation Fellowship

"Thank You" from Rev. Ken Thom. in Essex

A recent phone conversation with the above fellow countryman, who migrated south some years ago, expressed thanks to Liberton Kirk for receiving a quantity of old used post cards, which he passes on to an appropriate source locally, in aid of much needed funds for Mission Aviation Fellowship.

Even as we spoke another box of cards arrived at his house (!) from where he has done this collection service for several years.

. . . It is "not a luxury but a lifeline" . . . where trained and dedicated

international airline staff oper-ate in what must often be a most difficult and stressful

environment, with the motto - " " - fulfilling the call God has given them and reaching people in some of the world's most isolated communities. These small planes, including the latest Cessna l92 bring essential medical care, food and supplies, enabling physical and spiritual care to reach thousands, cut off due to formidable remoteness, natural disasters etc. and transporting the sick in need of urgent help to where this is available; a help to countless thou-sands.

They operate more than 135 light aircraft, and fly into 1800 remote destina-tions; maybe a small dark strip in the jungle and enemy territory.

Thanks again to all who have contributed by putting cards into the clearly marked receiving box (normally in the foyer) which is emptied regularly to send cards south in batches.

Many thanks especially to Erin and to Mary, who have helped with packaging etc. (I am told that, re the postcards, the older that they are the better!).

Above all, Pray constantly for the MAF staff, their safety and all aspects of their work and ministry.

Every time we hear a plane in the sky, and every time we stand at the fuel pumps filling the car, remember the pilots doing the same for MAF. . . . and a personal memory of some years ago, in a remote part of West Africa, when I heard an engine starting, and, looking up, saw a small plane, and inside it 4 heads bowed in prayer before take off . . . . MAF in action! C. Strang.

Justice and Peace Group

The South East Edinburgh Churches have an active Justice & Peace Group which seeks to highlight places in the world where there is injustice, and encourage Christians in the area to be aware, to pray, and to be generous in their support. We need a Liberton Kirk representative on this small group, someone with a real heart for justice and peace. This is definitely not an onerous task - the group meets only a few times a year, including the awareness evenings it organises. If you would like to know more, please get in touch with me in October. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608

Born in Syria, Ignatius converted to Christianity at an early age and eventually became bishop of Antioch. A tradition arose that he was one of the children whom Jesus had taken in his arms and blessed. Ignatius called himself ‘God Bearer’. Ignatius is responsible for the first known use of the Greek word ’katholikos’ meaning universal and whole to describe the church. He wrote: “Wherever the bishop ap-pears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. In the year 107, the Roman Emperor Trajan visited Antioch and forced the Christians living there to choose between death and denying Christ.

Ignatius would not deny his Lord and so was con-demned to be

put to death in Rome.

Ignatius bravely met the lions in the Circus Maximus in Rome; dying and living as a witness to his belief.

Not just in the arena in Rome, there are quite a few lions mentioned in the Bible . . .

1. An angel shut the lions’ mouths so that they couldn’t eat him (Daniel, chapter 6)

2. Who will lead the lion, wolf, lamb, goat and calf? (Isaiah, chapter 11)

3. He killed the lions or bears that threatened his father’s flocks (1 Samuel, chapter 17)

4. Who is like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat?

5. (1 Peter, chapter 5) 6. He killed a lion on a day when it

had snowed (2 Samuel, chapter 23)

7. The first creature was like a lion, what were the 2nd, 3rd and 4th creatures like? (Revelation, chapter 4)

Messy Church

Messy Church this month is on Saturday 26th October.

Messy Church is informal, it’s fun, and it’s specially for young families (children from 0 – P7) who find Sundays difficult. Come along at 4 o’clock and enjoy crafts and games, worship and food – our two hours together ends with a meal for everybody. Ruth Davies, 664 3608 (Messy Church logo © BRF2012)

Quiet Morning The first event on the SEECAT Programme is a Quiet Morning on Saturday 7th December, the first Saturday in Advent. This will be held in St. Catherine’s Church Hall, Gracemount Drive, and will finish with lunch. Full details next month; but please make a date in your diaries now for a quiet space before all the busyness of the Christmas season. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608

A New Guide to Giving

The updated Guide, together with a separate Giving Form incorporating a Review Form, a Standing Order and a Gift Aid Declaration, is being distributed to every congregational household. It will also be included in the Welcome Packs for new members and additional copies are available on the Welcome Desks.

We would ask you to read through it carefully because it serves as an opportunity to review your giving and, perhaps, your method of giving.

Offerings given by Standing Order are encouraged in place of the Free Will Offering (FWO) envelopes, although they are still available if preferred. If you can see your way to increasing your giving, then this would help the church enormously as we move towards our Bi-Centenary in 2015.

More immediately, this year, as you will see from the Financial Report which follows on the next page, there is likely to be a shortfall and therefore, if you could increase your offerings, this would be really appreciated, so that we can avoid or minimise this shortfall.

We can give our money, yet the most precious offering we can make is our time. The cogwheels of the church must keep turning so, if you are not already doing so, could you help the church even in small way? Without any commitment, why not phone Christine Johnson, our Stewardship Convenor (Tel. 664 7118), to tell her that you feel able offer some of your time? Alternatively, speak to someone already in involved in the activity that appeals, or to any Elder.

Lifetime Gifts and Legacies are both ways of saying thank you to God for all that the church provides. With the creation of a more welcoming Kirk Centre, funded by a generous legacy, there may be opportunities to make specified gifts. If you feel inspired to make such a gift, and would like to speak to someone about this, please give me a ring.

The deficit at this point in the year is in comparison to a surplus of £6,936 at the same time last year. This difference is mainly due to a number of 'one of' donations received last year from the 'Joy of Giving' campaign, which totaled £5,800 in the period. However our contribution to '121' to pay for Ministry costs, and to help struggling churches, increased, at this point in the year, by £1,200.
