Parish DirectorySecond Collection Next Weekend forStepping Stone Emergency HousingStepping Stone Emergency Housing (SSEH) is the only homeless shelter
in Anoka County that accepts single homeless adults. It began serving
homeless adults in 1994 under the management of Shiloh Ministries and
in 2005 received non-pro! t status with a Board of Directors appointed in
2007. In September of 2012, they were fortunate to be able to move from
their 16 bed facility on Ferry Street to the Cronin Building on the former
State Hospital grounds. They are now able to serve up to 66 adults. The
facility is sta$ ed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to provid-
ing shelter, they also provide mentoring and life skills training for all the
residents to promote long term life success.
Stepping Stone is a dormitory-style shelter that provides a primary, yet
temporary, address for 66 men and women, as young as 18 years old. It
is a safe and secure place to live, giving guided support for each guest’s
individual needs. They have high expectations and hold each shelter
guest accountable for personal growth and development. Eighty-! ve
percent of Stepping Stone’s budget goes directly to their educational
programs and guest support. Thank you for your generosity!

Stewardship Re! ection“…the Gentiles are co-heirs, mem-
bers of the same body, and co-
partners in the promise in Christ
Jesus through the Gospel.” (Ephe-
sians 3:6)
Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews.
He made us all one body with Him. We were all given di$ erent gifts; we
all have di$ erent yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ.
Ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one”
in this Year of Mercy.

The Solemnity of the Epiphany Bernie Leach
The story in Matthew’s Gospel recounts how the magi from the East
came to # nd Jesus. It expands the scope of who
will look for and follow Jesus, from just the Jew-
ish communities where Christ lived and died, to
all peoples of the world. For centuries this great
feast was observed on January 6 every year.
That is still the case for the Greek and Russian
Orthodox Churches and for the Church of Eng-
land and the Episcopal Church in the United
States. In the Roman Catholic Church it is no
longer a holy day of obligation but is always
celebrated on the Sunday between January 2
and January 8.
A quote from a sermon by St. Leo the Great, pope: “Dear friends, now
that we have received instruction in this revelation of God’s grace, let
us celebrate with spiritual joy the day of our # rst harvesting, of the # rst
calling of the Gentiles. Let us give thanks to the merciful God, ‘who has
made us worthy,’ in the words of the Apostle, ‘to share the position of
the saints in light; who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and
brought us into the kingdom of his beloved Son.’
This came to be ful# lled, as we know from the time when the star beck-
oned the three wise men out of their distant country and led them to
recognize and adore the King of heaven and earth. The obedience of the
star calls us to imitate its humble service: to be servants, as best we can,
of the grace that invites all men to # nd Christ.”

Information Session
for Parents
Tuesday’s sixth and seventh
grade class and Wednesday’s
seventh grade classes will
be taking the four weeks af-
ter Christmas break to learn
about St. John Paul II’s Theol-
ogy of the Body (TOB). TOB
brings a greater understand-
ing of love, relationships, and
the basic meaning of life so

able to appreciate the sexual
virtue of chastity, and there-
fore live it in a more pro-
found and meaningful way.
Ascension Press’ Theology
of the Body for Teens uses a
great mix of stories, real-life
examples, activities, prayers,
and references to the cul-
ture that teens understand
and answers the questions
middle school students have
about their own bodies, is-
sues on sexual morality, and
how they were uniquely cre-
ated for greatness.
Parents are invited to come
to an information session
on Monday, January 4 at 6:15 p.m. in FCC 10. You will
be introduced to the Theol-
ogy of the Body and be able
to preview the DVD’s and
have an outline of what will
be covered in class. If you
have any questions, please
contact Tammy Santander
( tsantander@ststephen-

St. Stephen’s Catholic School integrates faith with academics to prepare students to make solid Christian choices. It is an accredited, private school, comprised of pre-school, elementary, and middle school levels.
Faith: As a vital part of the parish community, we educate students in a Catholic atmosphere enriched by the Gospel messages of peace and justice. The spiritual development of students is the primary goal. The school recognizes that a person's faith is formed by living out that faith in community through prayer, worship, service and study; and grounded in our Catholic tradition.
Academics: In partnership with their family, each student is encouraged and directed to reach his or her potential. Our academic program emphasizes mas-tery of the basics, academic excellence, and a variety of extracurricular activities. The school prepares students to be fully equipped for their next level of academic achievement.
Community: The school seeks to provide a safe and trusting learning environment where each student is valued and chal-lenged to grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.
St. Stephen’s Catholic School is a
caring Christian community that
nourishes spiritual development
and academic excellence.

Our Lady of GuadalupeOn Friday, December 11, we honored our Mother Mary by recounting
the story of when she appeared as Our Lady of Guadalupe to Saint Juan
Diego in México in the year 1531. Her appearance uni" ed the Spanish
and the indigenous cultures of México and brought countless Aztec
people to the Catholic faith. Thank you to Mrs. Renner and the seventh
graders who were our music ministers, and the eighth graders who per-
formed a drama of Juan Diego’s meeting La Virgen de Guadalupe.

Epiphany: Finger Journey with the Magi Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer, SSND
The Magi are that mysterious group of seekers. The Magi made a journey.
You are invited to make a journey with your " ngers opening your Bible to cer-
tain passages that give us the traditions of some of the symbols of this feast.
Most of us heard of the Magi or “Kings” as children. We grew up singing
“We Three Kings”. (Finger Journey 1: The idea of three kings comes from
Genesis 26:26-31, in which three foreigners make peace with Isaac – a sym-
bol for Christ.) We may have our original image of the “Kings” engraved in
our imaginations. Who are they? What do they mean for us? Why is this
important? (Finger Journey 2: Read Isaiah 60:3 and Psalm 72:10. It is from
these passages that we have the tradition of calling these Magi “Kings”.)
Matthew shares these words of the Magi to
Herod, We saw his star at its rising and have come
to do him homage. The “star” has become a sym-
bol used in the crèche. We picture the Magi, look-
ing majestic, riding on camels, (Finger Journey
3: Read Isaiah 60:6 for this tradition) coming from
someplace east of Jerusalem. After consulting
with Herod, they are again led by the star which is over a house, in Beth-
lehem, where they " nd Jesus with his mother, Mary. They do him hom-
age, they o! er him gifts. (Finger Journey 4: Read Psalm 72:10 again. These
kings bring gifts.) Now they are warned in a dream not to return to Herod
and they depart for their country by another way.
The east, a star, gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh and a dream. How
is that all practical for us? One lesson for us is that these Magi were open to
being led. We might ask ourselves if we are open to being led by God. Do
we look for signs of God’s action in our lives? The Magi didn’t give up their
search when they no longer saw a star. They asked Herod, who consulted
with the chief priests and the scribes and got assistance.
Why didn’t the chief priests and scribes compete with the Magi and go
looking for the Messiah themselves? Jesus is waiting to be found by each of
us. We can ask that we will be open to the ways in which we can meet him
in our daily lives or we can be content to be among those who have knowl-
edge about Jesus but are not interested in meeting him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see the star that shows me your pres-
ence in other people. Help me to give the gift of myself to others. Awaken
in me the desire to go beyond knowing about you to knowing you. Walk
with me on my journey through the coming year. Please give me the grace
to always follow you. Amen.
Question: What is the star that God is using to reveal Jesus to me and to
show me how to give the gift of myself to Jesus and to others?
