Editor, Financial Secretary & National Garden Club Projects and Services: Launa Gould OC District: Treasurer: Mike Gould OC District Director : Bette Langford Talk about being Self-Sustaining and Self-Reliant . . . . . My husband and I went to the island of Cyprus last month to meet extended family for the first time. The British ruled Cyprus since 1878 and when they left there was a violent conflict between the Turks and the Greeks over the ownership of the land. Today, the Turks own part of the island and the Greeks control the other side of the island. The United Nations patrols the swath of land in-between the two sides to essentially keep the peace. We met Stavroulla, my niece’s mother-in-law, a most remarkable and independent woman who lives alone in that portion of land right in the middle known as “No Man’s Land.” She built a home in this area after the Turkish military took over her family’s land (and village) for their military base. We stayed with her the 3 days we were there. There was no electric or water company in the area. She has had a well dug for water that feeds her house. She creates her own electricity with a windmill and solar, which powers her range/oven and hot water heater--pretty amazing! So we had hot showers and TV if we wanted but the area cell towers were really weak, so almost no phone or internet, which was fine with us. She had chickens and a couple of ducks, so we had fresh eggs every morning. She had tons of edibles and flowers growing in her garden with wild white asparagus that grows along the dirt road in front of her house. There was also wild arugula in her yard, fava beans, potatoes (that she doesn’t remember planting), rosemary, different types of mint, and other herbs and plants that we couldn’t translate the names from Greek to English. She also had these massive ovens outside that she cooked a special pork dish all day for us--it melted in our mouth......yum! We were there for her surprise 70th birthday party! What do you give someone that you’ve never met before? The only thing I knew was that she was a gardener so I ended up giving her a SCGC apron with gloves in one of the pockets and a bunch of vegetable and flower seeds in another. I would’ve put in some garden tools but didn’t think I could get it through the airport security. She loved it just as it was! and Sherry Christensen Our very own Bill Schaefer (aka Butterfly Bill) came to Las Palmas Elementary School on Friday March 30 for our Fun Friday in the Garden He brought caterpillars and butterflies and spoke about which butterflies need which plants to lay their eggs on and how the caterpillars then eat the leaves of the host plant I learned some things I didnrsquot know and Irsquom sure the kids did too As a bonus a few of us got to see a Bluebird nest on the school grounds with two eggs We were also at Las Palmas on April 20 when we did an Earth Day activity We taste tested bottled tap and filtered tap water and talked about the toll that plastic water bottles take on the environment While not a scientific study the majority of the students preferred the taste of filtered tap water Our final Fun Friday at Las Palmas will be on Friday June 1 when we will help ready the garden for the summer Please come join us

from Diane Riopka In addition to the Monarch Butterfly Citizen Scientist project members learned about recently there are similar opportunities for garden lovers There is the Great Sunflower Project (greatsunflowerorg) that was created to learn more about pollinators in the United States with an emphasis on bees Participants are asked to plant the lsquoLemon Queenrsquo sunflower Helianthus annulus in the spring and record the number of pollinator visits per hour per flower Another project is the Bumble Bee Watch (bumblebeewatchorg) that asks citizens to photograph rare or endangered species While looking for rare bees consider also assisting the Bug Guide (bugguidenet) This site is interested in citizen sightings of different bugs This is not specifically a citizen scientist project but a site that has a huge data base on bugs and offers help in identifying bugs And BioBlitz (scistartercom) is a project where a group of people gather and identify as many species as possible at a particular location Consider helping these worthwhile organizations
