    A GREAT GREEN DAY!!

    It was a remarkable day , the day started with Exnora Greeen Pammal committee members welcomingthe members of EWB Chennai & members of EWB Australia to their office , 10 professional and studentmembers from EWB Chennai and 20 members from EWB Australia attended the meeting . Mrs

    Mangalam , director of the Exnora green pammal , addressed the gathering and she explained historyabout how the organisation came into existence , its mission and the working of the organisation with avisual presentation. Followed by Mr Gokul president of EWB Chennai chapter, who gave a greatpresentation on the current workings and activities of EWB Chennai.

    Following the morning session, all the members of EWB Chennai and EWB Australia led by MrsMangalam visited the vermicompost plant operated by Exnora green. There the workers of the plantexplained in detail about various processes taking place in the composting and Mrs Mangalam explainedon how the end products are used as a manure for cultivation purposes. From the vermicompost plantthe EWB teams were taken to biogas plant. The plant supervisor explained about the various processes

    taking place in the production of biogas from the wastes.

    It was a mini community biogas plant which consisted of three anaerobic pre-digesters, threebioreactors, a gas holding tank, a scrubber unit and electric biogas generator. The anaerobic pre-digesters were fed with the organic wastes collected from the community like the food and slaughterwaste. The biogas produced from the bioreactor is collected in the gas storage tank. Then the gas fromthe storage tank is led into the scrubber unit, where the impurities in the gas are removed and finallythe gas is led to the electric gas generator. The electricity produced from the plant is capable of lightingup to 30 streetlights in the surrounding area.

    Finally after visiting both the plants, the EWB teams headed back to the Exnora green office and aspecial south Indian lunch was served to all the EWB and Exnora members. After the lunch session, allthe EWB and Exnora members gathered around and had a discussion on the days meet. The membersof EWB Australia and EWB India shared their views about their views about the visit to the biogas plantand they also discussed about the solid waste management projects taking place in Australia. It wasindeed an great opportunity for EWB Chennai chapter members and EWB Australia members to interactwith each other and share their knowledge.
