Can I perform electrolysis on someone wearing a hearing aid?

Yes, except in the case of cochlear implants, to avoid deprogramming the latter.In the case of external hea-ring aids, you should ask the client to turn them off for the entire length of treatment. An operational hearing aid may create a frequency problem, since it may generate a whistling sound due to the proxi-mity of the epilator. This is a perfectly normal, yet undesirable, consequence. Furthermore, in this situa-tion, an electrologist should be even more attuned to the client’s behaviour and remember that the client cannot hear her or just barely when the hearing aid is off. This example empha-sizes the importance of a good consultation before undertaking any type of treatment, since modern hearing aids are so small they are nearly impossible to detect.

What can I do to get rid of those nasty blackheads?

The correct term is “comedo-nes”. They consist of secre-tions that build up on the skin and eventually become oxidized in contact with air, which explains their black colour. To eliminate them, the best strategy remains prevention:

1. Thoroughly cleanse the skin morning and evening with products recommen-ded for your skin type, such as LimpiDerm (see "Dectro Specials") or DermaLiss of the act’ion de Gala® line. Ill-suited products may add to the problem.

2. Once or twice a week, use an exfoliant such as ExoDerm (see "Dectro Specials", Canada only) of the act’ion de Gala® line to help remove impurities accumulating on your face.

3. An antioxidant emulsion such as LibraMat of the act’ion de Gala® line is also an essential ally, especially for smokers, subjects with oily skin or those exposed to the sun and pollution on a regular basis.

4. Avoid touching your face for no reason.

5. Meet your aesthetician for a skincare treatment at every seasonal change. The latter will be able to advise you on the use of cosmetic products at home.

Should we apply sunscreen on top of day cream, especially if the latter already has UVA and UVB protection?

The main purpose of the day cream is to maintain the skin balance. Its sunscreens are designed to protect it on a superfi cial level, during brief exposure periods only. Furthermore, the day cream is generally applied early in the morning. However, even in the case of a regular sunscreen, it is recommen-ded to repeat applications every two hours for ade-quate protection. Applied on a regular basis fifteen minutes before exposure, a sunscreen therefore beco-mes essential. Even on clou-dy days, 80% of the sun’s rays reach our skin… and so it becomes important to protect our skin at all times. Furthermore, for greater effectiveness, it is essential to keep all solar products away from sources of heat or humidity, and to change them every year.

10Many of you are familiar with the Dectro Group and its parent company, Dectro International. But do you really know these two? Here is a brief overview of a great success story.

The story begins in 1984. This is when Mr. Clément Beaumont and Mr. Denis Bourgault, business partners, acquired a small company located in Quebec City (Canada) and specializing in the manufac-ture of electrolysis equipment, which they later renamed “Dectro International”.

The eighties, which marked the era of microcomputers, turned out to be a good decade for our investors. Firmly convinced that the growth potential of this small business was related to its ability to adapt to computer advances, they decided to push back the boundaries of electrolysis by designing epilators with computer-controlled circuits and functions. They followed through on this idea by putting together a solid research & development team, thereby opening the door to infinite possibilities in terms of improving electro-lysis treatments.

This is how, in 1989, the first computeri-zed professional epilators of the “Apilus®” line came to be, but the latter were unfor-tunately greeted with much hesitation by professional electrologists. Used to a very different technology, it was necessary to show them all the advantages and the higher degree of comfort provided by these new epilators. They rapidly realized that this new technology vastly outran-ked that of their now outdated devices. Quickly, the initial hesitation gave way to an enthusiastic response which per-sists even today, allowing the company to continue its progression in the field of permanent hair removal.

After building a solid reputation in the world of electrolysis, and striving to meet the needs of the aesthetics market, Dectro International introduced in 1993 the Vitaderm®, a computer-assisted micro-current device for the face and body, then the VitaLiftTM, its little brother, a version for facial treatments only. These two devices underwent many transformations over the years, for the benefit of professionals who can perform more and more effective firming treatments with greater ease.

In 2001, the company continued to deve-lop its expertise in the field of aesthetics, by launching its first microdermabrasion device, the VitaPeelTM. A year later, an advanced version of the VitaPeelTM, the VitaPeelTM Ion, took the aesthetic market by storm, making its mark by combining microdermabrasion, iontophoresis and stimulomassage functions.

Dectro International, now on a roll, intro-duced in 2003 a new professional preci-sion cutaneous correction device called ApidermeTM, and presented to its local, national and international clientele oxy-gen therapy treatments with the Vital•O2

TM. Thanks to the intra-epidermal injection process using pure oxygen under pres-sure, the latter allows active ingredients to reach the deeper layers of the epidermis; a remarkable feat since no other product on the market can, to this day, reach the same depth of penetration. In addition to intra-epidermal injection, the device also offers facial nebulization (pure oxy-gen spray) and inhalation. A new and most welcome product, given the ever-increasing pollution in our cities.

In 2005, Dectro International will once again revolutionize the electrolysis market by introducing its Apilus® PlatinumTM. This

sophisticated device, which uses an ultra-rapid 27.12 MHz medical frequency, is able to coagulate tissues up to 56 times more quickly than the first diathermy (thermo-lysis) devices. The 27 MHz frequency, dou-ble the frequency used by its competitors, thereby offers unparalleled comfort to its clients. Furthermore, the device is equip-ped with smart-card technology… and is currently the only epilator in the world equipped with this function which allows professionals to develop customer loyalty by offering à-la-carte hair removal with prepaid treatment hours.

But all these advances would not have had such impact had our savvy business partners not made the effort of turning to medical research. Thanks to the coo-peration of medical doctors and research scientists, they made sure the effective-ness of their devices was backed by scien-tific research, which added to their clients’ peace of mind concerning the potential of their investments, and enabled the com-pany to build its reputation as a reliable source in a sometimes illusive market. The cooperation of doctors Alain Bélanger in 1998 (Ph.D., physiotherapy professor at Laval University, Québec, Canada) and Charles J. Doillon in 2005 (CHUL research centre, Québec, Canada) helped establish standards and supply new and unprece-dented tools to professionals respectively performing microcurrent and electrolysis treatments.

Furthermore, in an effort to serve its clientele better and make its work easier, Dectro International gradually began manufacturing a wide range of comple-mentary products for salons and institutes: treatment tables and stools, utility carts, probes, depilatory waxes, antibacterial products, and a line of actively advanced

The Professional Education Program at the Service of Electrology

In your workplace, very few activities can instantly cause injuries or pain. On the other hand, certain postures and tasks, seem-ingly harmless and trivial, are repeated so many times over sev-eral months and even years, that they eventually lead to injuries. This may sometimes make work and life in general more difficult, and can even lead to permanent disability.

Did you know that, although most electrologists are right-handed, many of them suffer pain in their left shoulder? The simple act of keep-ing the client’s skin taut may lead to injuries, making work uncomfort-able, painful, require treatment and even lead to days of lost work! Holding the probeholder or keeping the client’s skin taut are not, however, the leading causes of shoulder pain, it is the act of keeping the arm elevated for several minutes at a time, several times a day.

Over the years, work-related pain and disabilities that lead to long-term injuries have been defined in many different ways. We use the term "musculoskeletal disorders (MSD)".

Musculoskeletal disorders are related to different stresses that are often combined in a single work situation, i.e. stresses related to fixed postures, force or repetitive movements. One or several factors may be present. Their combination increases the level of risk.

Combination of factors that may cause injuries

Injuries may be caused either by the repetition of the same move-ment over and over again, or the lack of movement in a fixed, i.e. static, posture. The back and shoulders, involved in stabilizing the upper limbs, are particularly affected by this type of posture.

The amount of force required to perform tasks with high accuracy is also a critical factor in the development of MSD. As the muscular effort increases, energy and blood circulation decrease, thereby lead-ing to rapid muscular fatigue. The amount of time needed to recover may quickly exceed the actual time of work. If the resting time in insufficient, injuries may occur in muscle tissues. It has been shown (source: Patry, 1996) that the combination of force and repetition factors increases the risk of MSD by a factor of 29!

In 2000, a study on the reduction and prevention of MSD in dental clinics was undertaken by Mrs. Rose-Ange Proteau, ergonomist at the Association for Health and Safety in the Workplace (ASSTSAS). Mr. Denis Marchand, Ph.D. and professor at the Department of Ergonomics at UQAM, coordinated the study funded by the Institut de recherche Robert Sauvé en santé et sécurité du travail (IRSST).

Mrs. Proteau collaborated with Mrs. Lyne Noiseux, industrial designer for Akio Design, to design and develop new movable elbow supports, adapted for repetitive tasks that demand accuracy. In a clinical study con-ducted with dental hygienists, the muscular activity of eight muscles was measured by surface electromyogram (EMG) before and after one month of using the new supports. The results showed a signifi cant reduction of muscular strain, down 50%.

Since 2001, it has been proven that Posifl exTM movable elbow supports prevent and reduce the risk of MSD for electrolo-gists. Mrs. Hélène Dionne, electrologist and former dental hygienist, was the fi rst to show that the work of an electrologist is similar to dental work, since it requires the same accuracy and repetitive movements.

The Posifl exTM movable elbow supports are equipped with a ball-and-socket mecha-nism that flows with the body’s natural movements, while it supports the weight of the arm. The elbow support is very helpful to maintain a good posture throughout the day. The pad, made of urethane gel, is very comfortable for the elbow. The height adjustment helps keep the shoulder relaxed while you work.

After using Posifl exTM supports for a few weeks, Mrs. Dionne told us: «Before using Posifl exTM elbow supports, I would often experience fatigue and even pain in my shoulder and neck at the end of the day. Switzerland updates its electrolysis techniques!
