Wednesday Wonders Summer Series 2021 Race 3

For the third race of the series, 37 yachts enjoyed a predominantly south south westerly breeze

that averaged about 15 knots for the afternoon. Under blue skies the breeze increased as the

afternoon progressed resulting in the fastest race of the summer so far. The race was around

the 9.4 nautical mile course 13 and was completed by 36 of the 37 starters in the closest finish

of the series. It was a good result for some of the early starters with 6 of the first 10 yachts to

start among the first 10 to finish.

For the second successive week there was a perfect start to a race with SUMMER WIND

(Martyn Sly) crossing the start line on her handicap to win Start of the Day. Following a 2nd

place in race 2, SALTSHAKER (Ken Gayler) became the first yacht in this series to collect 2

prizes by winning the race. Second was CASSANDRA of MELBOURNE (Bob Reeves) with

SUMMER WIND finishing 3rd. In her third race of the series ESPRIT (Garry Anderson) sailed the

course in the fastest time – 63 seconds faster than her closest rival ALEX TEAM MACADIE

    (Jock MaCadie).

SALTSHAKER’s win takes her to the top of the aggregate with a total of 3 points. WHITE

POINTER (Tom Raft) and CASSANDRA are next both with 7 points. Then there is MAGIC (Phil

Spry Bailey) with a total of 9 points and ARCH DE TRIOMPHE (Murray/Newman/Taylor) on 10

    points completing the top five.

  • SALTSHAKER has made a flying start

to the series sailing all 3 races and

recording 3 top ten including 2 podium

finishes. She started this race from 6th

place only 4 seconds late for her 13

    minute handicap. SALTSHAKER had

built a 19 second lead at the first

rounding of SYC 4 which she increased

during the last 3 legs of the race. She

sailed the entire course in 1:50:39 and

was first across the finish line at 15:33:39. She was equal 2nd in the aggregate after race 2 and

is now on top with a lead of 4 points.

After finishing 30th out of 34 yachts in race

2 CASSANDRA was one of 10 yachts to

receive a handicap reduction for this race.

She started from 4th place 12 seconds late

for her 11 minute handicap. CASSANDRA

sailed the first 3 legs of the race in 1:14:00

and rounded SYC 4 for the first time in 3rd

place. She completed the last 3 legs in 40

minutes 12 seconds and crossed the finish

    line in 2nd place at 15:35:24 – 1 minute 45

    seconds behind the winner. CASSANDRA

was 10th in the aggregate after race 2 but

this podium finish puts her in a tie for

    second place.

This was the 2nd race this series for SUMMER WIND

and she couldn’t have made a better start – right on

her 18 minute handicap from 7th place. She started 4

minutes 56 seconds behind SALTSHAKER but by the

first rounding of SYC 4 this margin had fallen to 3

minutes 21 seconds. SUMMER WIND completed the

last 3 legs of the course in 37 minutes 23 seconds

and crossed the finish line at 15:35:53 – 1 minute 54

seconds behind the winner. With a total of 24 points

SUMMER WIND moves up from 27th to 14th in the

    aggregate.

  • It was a good start to this race with all 37 yachts

starting within 56 seconds or less of their handicap

and without anyone starting too soon. The median

start time was 8 seconds with SUMMER WIND

collecting her first of 2 prizes for the race by winning

    Start of the Day.

The median elapsed time was 1:40:41- the shortest

of the 3 races this series. ESPRIT became the 3rd

different yacht in 3 races to record the fastest

elapsed time. ALEX was the fastest in the first race

and CARPE DIEM (Paul Commins) fastest in the

    2nd.
